Do you think, realistically, you need to have painted? I have 10, and 6 trays not assembled. Thinking I am done, but there is this inkling yelling 12, which I do not believe is realistic.
How many trays of spearmen
16, for the inevitable double spearstar.
Two spear stars would really benefit from a dedicated rallying cornicen unit, so better up that to 18.

Hells no? I rarely run A spear star, boring... ![]()
Probably cause my brain to rot, that aside, crossbows can hold the cornicen.

The obvious answer though is however many trays you need to build out the army you want.
If you're not interested in running the 9 tray spear star, then the real hitting power of your army is going to come from Oathsworn, so I think you need to balance the rest of your army so you can have a significant Oathsworn threat. However, it does seem like if you can get the terrain just right that 2 mutually supporting blocks of six trays each of spearmen could be a great threat, allowing one of your blocks to support charge, or counter charge the flank of whatever the first block is engaged with.
I have 10 painted up. I'm going back and revising the paint jobs soon though.
12 - 8 for the spear star and another 4 for dispatch runner.

Yeah I've done 7 trays oathsworn, 2 are in the cueue currently. Own 10. More work certainly but less brain killing. The cueue is 16 archers, 4 leonx, 4 oathsworn, 1 scion, 1 golem. Primed, magneted, trays prepped... Not so bad ?. Then we'll move on to crossbows.
I think I'd definitely cap out at 12 trays like Asmo said (8 for spearstar + 4 for dispatch runner). I currently have 10 (4+4 from the two cores, +2 from 1 expansion), and I'm not quite ready to get that additional two trays. They do come with a Raven Tabard and Tempered Steel though, which are great card upgrades.
I've also only painted 6 trays of spearman so far, going way too slow. **** Daqan trim!
I have 10 trays of spear men, but 12 trays of cavalry
Need to paint my other 3 golems... For the 6 pack golem block. That'll be fun though.
Spearmen dont really scale very well which is rather annoying honestly. I've tried running multiple groups of spearmen and theyre incredibly underwhelming unless theyre in a 3x3 with a golem, but then they have terrain problems and cost half your list. And now theres plenty of ways to snipe characters.
i have 12 spearmen and i really dont see myself using more than that.
Also i really want to try the 6 golem block but it just looks so easy to deal with for its cost. Golems seriously got the uber shaft in this game.

I disagree, I've held fast and dismembered spear 3x3s using a golem 2x2 primarily, and some light support. Golems are solid options, they just may not be what you are looking for them to do.
Has anyone tried running a 4x1 Golem with 6-threat? They don't get any rerolls, but it'd be kinda fun to watch.

I really liked the rerolls on the 2x2 so, no, haven't. I'd sooner run a 1*4 and get 3 rerolls do 8-12.

I played Deathcall into someone who did this. I dont think hes put Rune Golems onto the table since
i try not to buy new minis until the old are not fully (which usually waters down to ~90%) painted. Partly because of the cash, but also because it annoys me to have unpainted minis standing around. Gameplay wise i would take a look at armada. Initially everyone bought 2 core games and now you want the newer ships and point cost is limited anyway so the 5 CR90s plan was probably a waste of space and cash, no? i generelly buy ~2 of each unit (number of trays beeing different in this game) so you can take two units of the same kind if you want to focus on that unit type but i dont buy the 3 or 4 you could field max if you would only use those - because thats usually just cheese, waste of cash - i like diverse gameplay/units and i dont play competetively with cheese min/maxed list.
Edited by madtulipConsidering they only roll 2 reds, have no Hit modifier (or any modifier for that matter), have no surge use w/o Temp Steel, and red dice love to blank or roll that single surge result no i wouldnt try a 4x1 of golems.
They desperately need the reroll. I'll hawthorne a 2x1 into a 1x2 and even just that makes them perform much better (though still not that great)
Heck only reason the 3x3 spearmen becomes nasty is the third die access (hero, weapon master). Three dice combined with threat 3-5 is crazy.
Edited by Vineheart01i hope FFG comes up with two new factions 2018 and loads of new units for the other factions. So far the pace of releases is ok (better than armada was), but i realy think they should ... speed release up in the initial phase of the game to get to some diversity quite fast. i would buy more with my 2 of each strategy that way.

He needs to learn to Kari Fortunas that punk.

If the weapon master survives to close, your opponent is doing it wrong. I <3 figure sniping so much.
He tried to Kari me, she died to deathcallers. White skill modifiers are great.

Yeah I did the math on 2x2 vs 4x1. With 2 blue runes on the board, I think the expected value is like ~8.25 dmg vs 9.0 or something. So not much of a gain going 4x1. Of course a 2x2 with a tray missing will do more damage, and it will fit in tight spots better (which matters a lot). So I agree, I'd rather run 2x2 as well (probably with a wind rune too, so those **** guys move more often, and can shield up while doing so)
I've done all 10 trays that I have. I recognize I will never put that many on the table, but they look good in the curio.

My last 2 trays are pretty quick and dirty, hah. A few flat out mistakes I didn't bother fixing.
Hide them in the back, no one will notice.
