Looking for Barserker advice.

By Ottomanic, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Going into my second campaign of Descent as a player, after a pretty fun run as Rendiel the Alchemist aka Doctor Drugs.

This time I'll be a frontliner and I picked Berserker. However I'm having a hard time picking what hero to pair with berserker so do you fine people have any advice for me?

In case it matter I'm planning on picking all 2 exp skills and all 1 exp skills except cripple.

Since you don't plan on getting the 3xp skills, nor Cripple, I would suggest you try Zyla, the Battlemage-Berserker.

Zyla's heroic ability is highly effective on a melee class, and her low HP is offset nicely by the Berserker's "Brute" skill.

She will be capable of flying right over hazardous terrain and enemy blockades, and make positioning very hard for the Overlord due to being unable to protect the flanks from Whirlwind attacks.
Her heroic feat also complements an aggressive and reckless playstyle, as she can simply disappear if things get too dangerous for her.

Her high Stamina will make her ready for Counter Attacks and additional Charges more often than other warriors as well.

Very fun :D

This actually sound like a pretty fun combo but Zyla is one of the few the guy that owns the game doesn't have.

Also another player has called dibs on battlemage so I guess I'll put your excellent idea in my pocket and pull it out at a later time.

There's many cool things to do with the Berserker :

- Karnon with Cripple can immobilize many monsters with ease, I know you don't want to use it, but I had to note this. And using him with Charge is really cool, since he can recover up to 2 fatigue and do it again, so twice a turn (1 fatigue for a surge, another by killing the monster). One of my Favourite (I love so much non-human heroes !)

- Lyssa is a cool Battlemage-Berseker too, since she can exchange a melee a power die with a red one, so for example, a green. And the bonus life is a cool advantage she really needs. Finally, since the 3xp cards of the Berserker are weak to my opinion, this class is a good one to be picked up with the Battlemage

- Jaes can be fun too but in my opinion, he is better as a Runemaster using Encraft runes

- Tahlia can make a great use of Counter Attack so she can move after and give headaches to the Overlord

- Any hero with good speed (5) can make the best use of Charge

Might be a little outdated though, seems to refer to Conversion Kit versions of heroes. Overall I really like Reynhart for any melee build just because re-rolling misses is clutch. Alys Raine might be a good choice too since she'll have a lot of spare stamina.

I would likely have picked Karnon the not-at-all-a-wookie if he was available but he isn't.

Yeah she seems very good as any anything-Battlemage, too bad someone else is Battlemaging.

Yeah I could see that but: 1 Battlemage is taken and 2 the guy playing a Battlemage-skirmisher is using Jaes.

Awww man that is hilarious but she isn't available.

That is true and I'll keep it in mind.

Thank you, I'm reading it right now.

If you aren't completely opposed to the 3xps, then Orkell.

Lots of stamina & speed, I think Brute works with his heroic feat.

Death Rage puts a deterrent on that very tempting brown die.

And he's quick- a lot faster than ol' Grisban.

You make a pretty good argument, maybe I'll go for him but the last campaign someone played a Skirmisher Orkell so that makes him a bit less appealing this time.

I think suggestions here are fine enough probably you made your choice already. (Heck I dont have some of those heroes)

Can I ask why you say you won't take cripple?

Well in part it seems kinda meh, the first time around none of the players had easy access to Immobilize so I didn't get to see it in effect from that point-of-view.

First time reading through Berserker and theorycrafting a 8 exp build I really liked all three 2 exp skills, so I needed to pick two 1 Exp skills to round myself out. A big sack of Health for 1 exp and smacking a monster during the Overlord's turn just seemed more impressive.

Honestly I might have just assumed that Cripple took an action to perform and under valued the card for that reason.

Do you have Nanok? He's fun with Cripple (can immobilize then push away with his hero ability)

Imagine him in an MoB campaign...

Nope, although the guy that buys most of the stuff really went nuts, he got like 3-4 Heroes sets for this new campaign we are about to start.

Nanok seems pretty stronk with his black defence dice. But Cripple + Nanok's Hero Ability is just plain mean, considering that the Overlord is two fer two in this gaming groupe some player meanness seems appropriate.

In fact, you have not "Heroes and monsters" boxes ? Only the ones of the "classic" expansions ?

So, you've got nothing ... How unlucky you are !

Umm no, I think the guy that owns the game has at least 4 different of those boxes now with a fifth on the way.

It is just that some of the recommendations I have been getting are in those remaining H&M boxes that the owners hasn't bought. yet.

So I finally settled on Pathfinder Durik for my Berserker.

His heroic Feat combos with Charge in a fun way and his high speed works well with that skill too.

How can you play without the full content ?!

You mean all of the H&M boxes and all that guff?

It is fine I feel, we got plenty of options with 50+ % of all Second Edition of all content.

I will never feel that I had enough, and i've got it all, but twice that amount of stuff would be good to me, and there's plenty room for so many things still !
