Why is that Kuni not wearing kabuki facepaint? Is that not a thing anymore?

There were Kuni cards without facepaint in the old game.

Is there only one Unicorn card in the pack? Or am I missing something?

The imgur pics don't show all 20 cards. @Tonbo Karasu has a table showing Seal of the Unicorn and one of their keeper/ seeker only cards (can't remember which one) numbered in pack 6.

So "Mono no Aware" is the final card in the cycle. Nice touch!

Talisman of the Sun is the keeper only Unicorn card (thus currently playable in-clan).

Of course! Very much looking forward to waving that thing around.

Kuni face-paint is traditionally part of the training and custom of the family. it's supposed to symbolize protection against the impure. If a Kuni doesn't have it, it's gross oversight on the art.

I don't feel like she's a dud of a card:

double up on an end of round sac/draw

stealing 2 attachments with Kirada District. (I'm gonna say I was leery about Kirada District, but I was very wrong, it swings very hard, it's worth paying the fate for card and skill advantage)

Just remember, her potential will only keep getting better.

Karada Districted is limited to 1x and Pyre you're generally going to only run 1-2x as well. So her action, given the current card pool, is hardly reliable.

I do agree that she has great potential. I'm disappointed that potential wasn't really tapped in the cycle she was introduced in though. I was really hoping to see some kind of siegeworks holding that could nuke Fate off attacking characters or something.

I think I'm mostly disappointed because I really like the Kaiu, holdings-centric mechanics, and this card in particular. The fact that I have no incentive to play her really makes me sad.

The Kaiu Inventor as worded is insanely powerful. The extra granted ability use never expires.

I don't gauge a card's power over an oversight we know is soon to be fixed. /shrug

The face paint is part of the training of the Witch Hunters ( Tsukai-sagasu ) specifically, not of the Kuni family as a whole.

In old L5R at least, it was also a signature of the Kuni shugenja school too. They had no school mon but wore facepaint in a pattern similar to their master's. Not all Kuni family are shugenja, not all Crab shugenja are Kuni family but all Crab trained shugenja are Kuni school.

The 1 cost Dragon monk is weird. His ability will rarely be very useful. He makes High Kick slightly better, though still probably only worth running 1 or 2 at most.

And for that reason alone (being a low cost Monk) I’m gonna include him in a Monk Dragon deck. The deck might work if there are enough support cards. ?‍♂️

That's why I'm considering the Itinerant Philosopher. 2 cost monk with low enough stats that I won't miss bowing him during a fight.

He might be bad, but I only want one bushi in my monk deck if I can help it!

Welcome to an FFG Living Card Game. :P

I haven't decided yet whether I like Miya Satoshi or not. Seems like his ability would be great in an imperial heavy deck, but aside from the magistrates we don't have many new imperial cards, and pulling a Seppun Guardsman or Otomo Courtier would feel bad. As others have mentioned, Lion and Unicorn might still be good with him due to their recursion effects, but I'm just not seeing a viable imperial deck for him out of Phoenix.

Lots of the new holdings have the Imperial trait.

I also love how the card with the concept of "The Impermanence of All Things" is in the first cycle of impermanent cards.

This is one of my favorite casual decks. I've been working on an imperial deck out of Unicorn and Satoshi makes it a blast to play. Not sure it's got the chips to be competitive but it's fun for sure

I think it is just because they know how many cards they have to errata in order to make them work properly.

It's really just a warning to the fanbase.

I think you run him as the 4th copy, maybe 5th, of your imperial magistrate so you can dig into that card faster, if it's worth digging for.

Other than that, it's a silly "combo" piece, that likely isn't competitive......

But that never stopped me from trying before.

Satoshi is legitimately good. Although in order to play him you pretty much can never play any other imperial units unless said imperial units are wroth tutoring for. If Satoshi's ability always gets you a holding or an extra copy of himself that's always good. It's also not much of a cost either. The only way losing cards from your deck is a real penalty is if the game runs long enough that you deck yourself. Otherwise it means nothing. And for decks with any sort of recursion ability(Lion, Crab, Unicorn, keeper initiate) the discard is a potential benefit.

I personally think that Satoshi is good in every deck that isn't Dragon (and maybe Crane) and you need to build around it with Scorp.

Is not every clan going to get a limit 1 imperial holding?
