Which Set to start with?

By bixeightysix, in Star Wars: Destiny

Hi all,

I'm looking to sink my teeth into Destiny, but at this point in time, what set should I purchase a booster box of first? I'm looking at buying a couple Two Player Starters - but after that, which set would give me the best bang for my buck? The more recent stuff, or the older stuff since it may become harder to find?

Thanks!

(2) 2 Player starters, (2) of each of the new legacy starters, decide what deck you want to build, buy the single for said deck. Get ideas from Starwars Destiny DB, the best site for deck ideas.

SoR is probably the strongest set to date. Although, the recent errata drops a couple of the characters down a notch. I think if you don't grab Awakenings or SoR while they are still available, you may regret it. Even after the reprint, there's still only a finite amount left and after Legacies releases, I'd expect new players to push the price of those two sets up.

I agree that singles of your favorite characters and building a deck from that is probably the best route to get you playing right away for the least $$...but I personally like cracking open a box and building from what I opened.

If your dead set on getting a box, I’d say start with awakenings. All the legendary characters are strong and still relevant to varying degrees. More so than the other two sets IMO anyway. It also has many staple events and upgrades. SoR is probably better overall, but I like the characters from awakenings the most. If you find that supports and vehicles is your thing, Empire at War focuses greatly on that.

Then you can keep building from there and not feel like you missed out on great cards once they aren’t available any more.

Awakenings has some of the best cards, and some of the most iconic characters, but also is very random in terms of how good your pulls will be (there’s a high chance of getting duplicates, and it takes a lot of pulls to get everything).

Spirit of Rebellion is the most even - all the cards are good, but very few are worth a ton.

Empire at War is more like Awakenings - very random. You’ll get a lot of duplicates but also more valuable cards.

I am the only person on this forum who feels this way, but my opinion is that the two-player starters are not a great deal for the money. They’re fine, but in my opinion you’re better off buying the Kylo and Rey starters (the old Awakenings ones) and spending the extra money you save there on boosters. The two-player starters produce two decks: the first, the hero deck, is not good (it’s very weak compared to most other decks) and the villain deck has been errata’ed into non-existence. There’s some good cards in there that you can buy later, but just to get started, I’d advise buying packs so that you get some legendaries to trade or sell for other stuff and build up a real deck.

One thing to keep in mind is that there will be a rotation at some point. Awakenings has already burned a year's worth of its time in the sun. That aside, all the sets have good cards in them, not use the big ones but also the commons and uncommons that will fill up your deck.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I am concerned a little bit about diving in with a booster box of Awakenings because I'm afraid they will rotate out. I am interested in the 2 player starter just as a way to get started...especially if I can get a good deal (BOGO).

I suppose the 2 Two-Player starters and a booster box is still the way I'll go...hopefully the force will speak to me in terms of which set booster box to buy. =)

I wouldn’t get too worried about rotation. It’s unlikely we’ll see any for at least two more years (although this has been hotly debated before and it might be nice if FFG officially clarifies that.)

Thanks Kieransi, that makes me feel a little bit better. Now, if you'd just get on the Two-Player Starter hype train! ;)

Seriously though, I appreciate the info and advice.

I don't think they know yet.

Perhaps they need to see a trigger event that would suggest the game is due a rotation?

Im not a fan of the 2 player starter as a stand alone. The two decks you can build from it are boring and don’t really play well. IMO they are a poor representation of what you can do within the game and don’t really give a good taste of how characters and decks can flow so well together.

That aside, the cards that come with it I’ve found are a fantastic addition to my collection and MANY of the cards have found their way into other decks. All the character specific upgrades(Rey, Poe, Phasma, Kylo all have their own weapons) are very nice. Honor guard, Sound the Alarm, Dark Counsel, Distraction etc...are all great as well.

Best guess for ration is 2 year floor and 3 year ceiling.

I am not sure if buying a box is the best way to go unless the objective is to get a big collection. Find a couple of good decks you like that won't cost too much and just buy the singles. At this point pretty much every deck has cards from all 3 sets. There really isn't a go to set. Check out swdestinydb.com for deck lists.

And yes, you want the two player set because it has great cards that will find their way into your decks, not because it is a great standalone product.

Target currently has a buy two get one on the two player starter. Not as great as BOGO, but you're getting a great deal nonetheless imo.

Buy two get one free on something you really only need two of?

They can be found on sale for around $20 if you look hard enough.

i'd be surprised to see rotations already. This game is what just shy of a year old?

If they killed off cards that quickly i would be rather upset. Not much value from the cards at release then.

I'm on the same footing as you. I went the starter route for now to get a legal deck , but I figure I won't get a booster box until legacies, and then armed with the new hotness, I should be able to Trade for the old cards I want.

Extra cards for trade. I'm sure quite a few folks on here would be interested. But yes, 20 for the 2 player starter is a deal I would absolutely jump on.

If you're worried about rotation, then avoid everything but the two player starter. Rotation typically pushes out the whole year of content, not just one set at a time. 2player starter may be the only thing of this first year that survives the first rotation.

Somewhat good, but they are 5$ higher than "normal" price. So basically, you pay 10$ more for 2, and you get a 3rd one.
