Converting 4E Characters

By Lord of the Seal, in Legend of the Five Rings Roleplaying Game Beta

Greetings from the Sands, Evil-Smelling Brother-in-Law of a Camel!

Just a simple question, do you reckon it is possible to convert 4E characters to 5E ?

If so, how would you proceed ?

Thanks.

See you in the Sands.

What kind of conversion do you have in mind?

Specifically, what degrees of conformity to the new rules and similarity to the old charcter do you aim for?

Schools are different - not just the techniques, but the entire way they are set up. Advancement is different from Insight too. Skills are different - not just the skills themselves, but the way they are resolved is fundamentally different. We still have Rings, but no Traits. You’re now required to take a fixed number of advantages and disadvantages - so aside from them being different and working differently, you probably can’t mirror them to begin with.

You can convert characters in the sense that you can build new ones around similar concepts, but I think that a conversion in the sense of translating stats and mechanics from 4th to 5th doesn’t work. This edition is too big a departure from the previous ones for that.

From 4E to 5E:

  • Rings: Subtract 1. Add a distinction if Trait higher than ring by 2 or more.
  • Skills: levels scale similarly, so convert by lowest subskill plus 1 per additional subskill
  • Advantages/Disadvatages - Any with same names (there are a few) should convert directly. Rest, pick close or make them up.
  • Shadowlands taint: The value is the number of shadowlands traits.
  • Gear - no changes, other than mechanical effects.
  • If advantages less than 3, raise to 3. If disadvantages less than 2, add a couple. In both cases, base them upon played history. Make certain at least one is an anxiety.
  • Glory, Honor: No change
  • Status - if below 90, x0.8 +17.

Rationale:

Rings - The ring scale is different, but since most PC's were 2's to 6's (on a 1-10 scale) , and in 5E it's 1 to 5 on a 1-5 scale...

Taint: 5 rings, 5 taint advantages... simple conversion

Minimum advantages and disadvantages: The system needs some stress hooks for 5E to work well, so at least one anxiety.

Status: they rescaled it. The upper end isn't changed, but the lower end is..., so the math is to scale everyone up as needed.

Thanks all, right now i am trying to find a way to convert the NPC for the Naishou Province book.

There are a fair number of courtier and converting shuji isn't easy since it is new 5E item.

See you in the Sands.

Not really new... most of them are courtier school abilities from 3E
