Acrylic Templates

By j_man_04, in X-Wing

I have yet to encounter or hear of anyone having a problem using their second party templates in tournaments. I personally also have templates from Curl Paw Creatives along with some tokens. They have served me well and I would recommend them to anyone.

Litko are nice. They can also have customized inscription.

Team covenants are great if you want a generic theme... sadly they don't currently produce Rebels and Empire, but if you want First Order, Resistance, or Scum themed templates, they look really nice:

Also curled paws are really nice as well:

I've championed them in a few threads by now but I love the templates from Magic Works. Here is my set I got earlier this year:

Best templates I've ever seen are the ones I ordered from Black Box Seven in Germany. Took a while to get to the US, but worth it.

Magic Works are great, but costly. I’m holding out hope that All Wings and Cog O Two will get together to do something like the Cog O Two PLR template sets.

Well, yeah. They have to pay for those lawyers since they are selling artwork they don't own the rights to

But seriously, that template set is kinda sexy.

I use 3rd party acrylics for movement, and have not ever had anyone raise a fuss during a tournament. Its very common. You cannot however use 3rd party bomb or asteroid tokens, that is strictly forbidden by the book.

I dunno if I'd describe it as "strictly forbidden." More like, "Not listed in the things that can be acrylic."

It's a weird pair of exceptions. If you think about it, movement templates are both much more likely to be slightly off, and much more likely to have a measurable effect on the game. I'd really love to know the justification for excluding bombs and obstacles from the list, if for no other reason than to eye-roll at it.

For my part, I use my acrylic bomb tokens all the time. They looks so much like FFG's that I doubt anybody would ever notice the difference. I use my acrylic obstacles at small tournaments.

Anyone got a link to these? I tried Google but got a ton of Harry Potter links returned.

Yeah, I personally wouldn't care unless the acrylic looked seriously fishy, but I doubt people are going out of there way to produce a bomb token that is 1mm larger than in diameter to maybe squeeze out a hit. They are more durable and often look pretty sharp, as well.

As far as the legality, in tournaments its spelled out in sections 2. g. Tokens and 3. Legal Products. Ship, obstacle and bomb tokens are specifically named as "essential tokens", and 3rd party replacements are not allow except for "non essential tokens" as well as range rulers and movement templates. Has nothing to do that they can't be in acrylic, just absolutely no 3rd party ones. So, you could use FFG acrylic bomb tokens like the acrylic Seismic token FFG did .

Thanks, all, for the input! Got an email notification that my CurledPaw maneuver set is on the way!

That took less than a day, so that's pretty fantastic. Will likely get them by the end of the week.

ok, those are amazing.

So I was planning on coming in here to plug the shop, but it looks like everyone else has already done that, you have already purchased a set, and I have already shipped them out. So Thanks for showing Curled Paw some love! <3

FYI I also ordered some curled paws from reading this.

Really appreciate the quick turn-around! Also, from all the comments on left on here, it's clear y'all are delivering a quality product, so I'm glad I shared this thread so other people could take a look at them.

I got a custom set from Litko ages ago and I love them. Sold the set I won in a tournament since I’d honestly rather use my custom ones.

But one piece of advice. I got the dark blue acrylic. They look great but have a tendency to blend into the star mats and get lost. Think about a bright color if you go acrylic

Yeah, I got my Litko sets way back toward the beginning of the game. Fluorescent green with "Your lack of faith disturbs me," and fluorescent orange with "The Force will be with you. Always." Been very happy with them. I have a bunch of Curled Paw tokens, and they're great. They make my favorite Palpatine token, actually. And thanks to Assault on Grayskull Base, I have a set of the templates @heychadwick pictured, and they're also great. In honor of The Shuttle Tydirium guys, we use those for our HotAC games.

As long as they are sized correctly you can use third party acrylics. In fact, most players in tournaments have upgraded acrylics.

Personally, I have a nice set of wooden templates.

Several of the different FFG prize rulers are one-sixteenth inch short when compared to the boxed set's card ruler.

Stock parts rule! (pun intended)

Totally. The best for bragging rights.
But keep using the 3rd party ones to actually play the game, because FFGs is unable to print tournament prices correctly, does not matter if it is cards, cluster mines, are range rulers :P

And afterwards you can intimidate your opponents into throwing the game by blinding them with your swag

Maybe one I’ll win a set! I play with a pretty tough crowd who usually put on a good showing at Worlds.
