Acrylic Templates

By j_man_04, in X-Wing

Hey all,

My maneuver templates that came with the core set(s) are getting a bit beat up. I'm hoping to get a set of acrylic ones from Etsy or somewhere before a tournament comes up. I don't want anyone making fuss of my beat-up templates. But, I also don't want to buy a set that may not be "official" templates. So, is there any frowning upon using custom acrylic templates? I know some FFG tournaments have given them out as prizes, but those go for more than I want to spend on eBay. Would you recommend a particular set that's sold through something like Etsy?

These look decent (and come with the range templates) but, again, I don't want to buy something I can't use in a tournament.

Thanks for any advice!

I've used wooden templates for over a year with no problems, and I've never seen anyone raise a fuss over anything acrylic either, except for acrylic asteroids or bomb tokens.

As long as they are sized correctly you can use third party acrylics. In fact, most players in tournaments have upgraded acrylics.

Personally, I have a nice set of wooden templates.

Two people have now mentioned wood templates, which I'd love to get as well .. been using acrylics for a few years, they are great .. thought about metal ...

For the op, go for it on acrylic... got mine in Kansas City during a regional from the store.

however, if anyone wants to mention where to get nice wood ones throw that out there too...

I got mine through Kraken Skulls, they make wooden templates and tokens, so I have an array of matching shields, target locks, and more.

Edit: Or they use to anyway, I don't see their wooden templates/tokens anymore.

Edit2: Okay they do, but only on Etsy and not their independent store.

I've used Curled Paw for other stuff, not the movement templates, but really like their work. I think that is a good choice to get.

I use 3rd party acrylics for movement, and have not ever had anyone raise a fuss during a tournament. Its very common. You cannot however use 3rd party bomb or asteroid tokens, that is strictly forbidden by the book. I do keep a set of cardboard movement templates in my stash just in paranoid preparation if someone ever does make a fuss.

Curled paw make great acrylics and as long as they are the right size they're tournament legal.

Non FFG Acrylic Templates are just fine for tournaments all the way up to and including Worlds (but they give you a set of theirs to use if you end up on FFG's stream)
At high level tournaments (system open, nationals, worlds, etc) I've seen before the cut rounds where you compare your templates to your opponent's, idea being if there is a difference that you both will share one set of templates for the round. Never heard of sharing templates happening at this level.

Otherwise you're free to choose any manufacturer you want! I bought mine from litko a few years ago and still going plenty strong. I'd recommend for handiness that you find ones that have ship nub cutouts on the 1 and 2 straights, for easy marking of ships. Cog-O-Two does this and I'm sure tons others do as well.
Edit: Those curled paw ones you linked are great! I'd also recommend customizing in either color or have him add text. And pick up a couple of his ship markers :D

I really like Curled Paw Creatives tokens (all of my tokens are CPC) so I am a fan of their work and their templates look great. Currently my acrylic templates are from Applied Perspective and I love them. They also make a great tournament tray!

Get a set with notches for marking ships, it's super useful. Curled paw has this feature.

This is one of the reasons I am considering ordering a set even though I already have another brand!

Those ones are great. I got that set myself. I don’t care for the color I chose but the quality is very good. I was a t a game store in New Hampshire yesterday and they sell these there.

Awesome. Didn't even notice that at first. That pretty much sold me on this set.

Just curious, which color did you choose? I ordered dark grey.

My tokens and templates are made out of gold-pressed Latinum. They are amazing.

LOL. The smoke grey was the one I ordered? They are very good, just not as translucent as I would have wanted. I wish I went with the standard clear with mint tint. Oh well, they function great.

Why not? R2D2 was in Star Trek. E.T. was in Star Wars. C3P0 and R2D2 where in raiders of the lost arc. ???

This makes me sad.

Google R2d2 Star Trek And see for yourself. I’m not lying.

I’ve really liked my team covenant cherry wood templates. Though I need to get wood tokens at some point.

Been using a custom set of them for a couple of years get more "where did you get them" as opposed to "no you can't use them".... :)

Curled Paw Creatives are great. And they are tournament legal.
