Thinking about playing

By Thyrkill, in Star Wars: Destiny

Hey everyone,

As the title states, I'm thinking about getting into this game. Would the best starting point be the new Legacy starters and set? Or is there a better route into starting the game? Thanks for any and all recommendations.

Matt

PS. I live in Tokyo, Japan. How do I find people to play with in a place that FFG doesn't support with organized play?

I think the first thing you should do is establish if there’s a local player base that you can tap. Visit some gaming stores - of if you’re not comfortable with the local language, then try to find an international board game group on something like meetup.com. It’s just not much fun having a game if you have no one to play it with. Worst case scenario: there’s a Facebook group where people play over Skype.

Although the content of the starters is not known yet, it’s fair to say you’ll want one of each and maybe a second copy of your preferred faction. To get a good spread of cards you’ll want at least 18 boosters, but if you have the money a sealed feed (36 boosters in an unopened box) is better value, because then you’re guaranteed six Legendary cards. Once you have a few boosters open, work out what kind of decks you want to build, and then fill them out with singles from websites like coolstuff.

There’s also a wholly digital option in the form of Tabletop Simulator. It gives you immediate access to all of the cards. It’s not official, but it’s pretty tight. Being in a country where maybe the game won’t be widely played, TTS might be the best option for you at this stage.

This year has been a learning curve for FFG's Destiny. I would suggest saving a little money and start your collection with the next set that should be out in the near future. Watch everything you can on the internet. Most of all, have fun.

Oh yeah, read all the new rules and FAQ's that are out.

Any starters are good to "start", but the 2 player one is more interresting. Since they will give you at least a deck to play with and a deck for your future opponent in the case of the 2 player one. Someone that have enough friends can teach them the game and eventually create a small community even without an official store nearby.

With enough people, you can order stuff by mail and save on bulk purchase.

Boosters can be tempting, but in limited $ environment, lot can be aquired on ebay to get several less popular rares for a small price, wich will give you the abulity to create several deck.

Due to the recent FAQ, I’m not sure I agree that the 2-player starter is the best thing to start with. The playing field is even enough, I’d just wait and buy the starters and boosters from the Legacies set (probably coming out in about two months).

We are talking about playing here, Not necessary tournaments.

Even with the FAQ change, I still think the 2 player set is the best place to start. Buy one, play with that is included and see if you like it. Then see if there are play groups locally before buying more.

The biggest challenge is finding people to play.

The cards in English creates a language issue and gaming itself isn't a notable hobby in Japan.

I think finding opponents would be your first mission, because rules, cards and even what set to buy is for naught if you don't find a handful of people to play with. Perhaps a search of facebook groups in Tokyo that are into Star Wars or Games may be a start. I recall seeing a video of a store champs in Taiwan and I am sure many of the people there probably had a similar issue to what you may have.

Once you have found people, your best bet is to mirror their choices, if all they have is a starter play starters for a time.

Good luck, let us know how you fair.

I understand that we’re not talking about tournaments here - for the same amount of money, the Rey starter vs. the Kylo starter is a much more rewarding game experience than one copy of the two-player starter, in my opinion. There’s more character dice on the field, and also characters from all three colors, and the overall game is much more balanced (villains almost always win the two-player starter.)

The Rey and Kylo starters have very little replay value now. The 2 player box has some cards that are being used in the current meta but you need two of them to start playing right. Buy the cards in the two player boxes and mess around with the decks. Practice alone while learning the rules. Read the forums and look at the decks on Starwars Destiny Deck Builders. Then you can actually play on the Starwars Destiny tabletop simulator to practice and play more.

Hi. For now you may get 2 Player Set. You will want that anyway at some point. Then i suggest waiting for Legacies. They are new Base set so most likely that Awakening (and Awakenings starters) will be rotated out. So when they hit in december you can buy new starter sets and combined with 2p set and few boosters you have a base of fresh playable cards to work with.
