If I may propose (for X-Wing Designers)

By Poliakhoff, in X-Wing

Hello people !!

(I already apologize for my bad english, Im french and speak better then I write in english...)

I want to open a discussion about this great game who is X-Wing, for me one of the best tapletop of miniatures games I ever played.

But.

Yeah, this a but and a BIG but : I am really REALLY desapointed about the ships released since few month (or years....). Especially by the design of these ships.... Not cool.

I am a Star Wars fan but an hardcore fan : I don't know the whole story, not reading all the books, and I dont like the animes like Clone Wars. Just the movies.

But I REALLY love playing the X-Wings (T-65, T70) B-Wings, Y-Wings, T-Fighters etc... Yes I know Im f...ckin old school xD

Is it possible to stop (some way) to release, just for a time, some ugly (for me) and known only by hard core fans ships ?

Please bring us back the old ones, please give us something like "veteran" tools to make the T-65 greater again !!!

Are some people interested in this kind of things ?? Or am I alone thinking that the 2 last waves are ugly as f.....

Thank you guys.

People play this game for different reasons. Some enjoy putting the old, "classic", ships from the original trilogy on their gaming table. Some enjoy the competitive and complex nature of the game mechanics, regardless of the ships. One person might think the latest releases of ship expansions were "ugly", but another person might be excited to try out some of the new upgrade cards contained within them.

Or, as the saying goes, "different strokes for different folks".

If you're looking to contact (or talk to) FFG directly though, be aware that they don't really read these forums. You're better off writing an e-mail.

Last time I had this discussion I insisted that people play the game because it‘s Starwars. Someone then opened a thread and asked here in the forum whether they would have started the game if it wasn‘t Starwars. Turned out that the - in tendency more competitively oriented - forum community is split at around 2/3 to 1/3, with the majority playing Xwing because it‘s Star Wars.

I‘m aware that this is slightly tangential to the OP, because we don‘t know how many of those 2/3 prefer the classic ships. Definitely not all of them, but probably many. I expect t he real numbers outside of the forums to be more in favor of Starwars in general and iconic ships in particular.

There was also another interesting thread where a majority mentioned that they would prefer iconic ships to be slightly too good compared to more unknown ships, given the assumption that perfect balance is impossible.

So together that means to me that a refit for iconic ships is very much desired among the player base and - now that we have the great FAQ - maybe a good next target?

I don't necessarily disagree with any of that, @GreenDragoon . I'm just offering a counter-perspective to the poster above who presented a fairly one-sided view.

Ugly ships that make me cry:

E-wing

K-wing

Wookiee Bark Barge

any Scum Fighter from SWG

Any Scum large ship not belonging to TESB bounty hunters

I am split. While I'm an OT fan most of all, I still want to see a large variety of ships, including stuff from the EU and prequels. As I have said elsewhere, the first 4 waves are essentially XWM 1.0, and all of those ships are being slowly upgraded.

One thing that would help is to make sure that further releases stressed some sort of narrative Star Warsiness (iconic characters, for example, as pilots or crew) as opposed to just a game mechanic that doesn't imply anything in the Star Wars narrative. As GreenDragoon pointed out, a greater majority of people play this game because it's Star Wars, and I wish FFG would keep that more in mind. I think people would be happier with a Phoenix A-Wing repaint or a Y-Wing repaint with Gold Squadron aces than another eclectic ship chosen to introduce a meta-changing game mechanism.

En tout cas, bienvenue a XWM.

Thank You :)

Im playing X-Wing 2 years now, but I stopped because of a mix of Jesper's post : I really enjoy to play competitive tournament, but I disagrea to buy ships I dont like just because it's top tier or OP...

OK, I can agree that the "beauty" of a ship is complitely subjective thing, but I think all fans of these game (or Star Wars) - OK maybe not ALL of them - will agree that the most iconics ships of the saga are not competitive right now and that will be so great to have an up of these "old" things...

Im pretty sure that many new players of this game will start buying ships and core box starting with the ships of the saga, and then buy competitive things if they want to challenge at there store...

Ps : I believed maybe posting on the US forum designers will read the thread... but yeah, maybe an email to FFG will be better. Lets try with the thread first xD

eh...

so I strongly disagree with the assertion that the recent waves are either ugly or disappointing. The models are all quite beautiful and the gameplay fresh, though I must admit I'm not super fond of the auzzie model (Still like how it plays)

but at the same time, I do believe a buff to old, original trilogy ships would sell like hotcakes. I have no idea why FFG hasn't tried fixing the ships they havn't already released ace packs for, as I though they did an incredible job with the Defender already and would like to see the same done for the nostalgic movie ships.

You’re definitely not the only one who feels that way! I too would like to see the (in my opinion) more attractive ships from the original trilogy hit the table more!

As big of a fan as I am of flying casual, running alternate-format events, and the like, it might be nice to actually see a few more of the classic ships hit the tables at tournaments!

I wonder how many of those people consider the Gunboat "iconic". My guess is that it's a non zero number- and that they're vastly over represented on this forum compared to Star Wars fans as a whole...

I don't recognize a lot of the ships that have been coming out despite being an active fan of Star Wars.

Scurrg? Never heard of it. Auzituk? I saw it in the background of an episode but never knew its name. Quadjumper? I do remember that one. I went "BOOM!" in the movies. Jumpmaster? What the H is that thing?

But I don't begrudge FFG for finding different ships to make.

It's nice to have variety, but I too would like to see movie ships come back to the forefront.

Unless you are going to restrict non-movie ships where you play, it's not looking like it is going to happen at a grander scale.

I think the Gunboat is a joke that went too far and now we all take it seriously. :)

The nice thing about the Gunboat is that in this game as well as in the original games, it does what it is supposed to - it provides a convenient way to have an effective at dogfighting non-TIE ship that matches the aesthetic of the original movies, because it’s kinda like a little Lambda Shuttle with extra maneuvering fins and weapons. So that’s why I like it - it fills a neccesary game contrivance while looking Star-Wars-ey.

I heard about and bought this game because it was Star Wars. I had never played any other minitures game nor even set foot in a FLGS before this game. I got in around the realease of wave III. While I have enjoyed flying many of the non-movie ships and even think some of them look pretty cool, my favorite moments are when I am flying Han, Luke and Wedge and Vader and Backstabber. If Waves 4-6 had been nothing but the first three waves re-released in new paint jobs with new pilots and upgrades, I would have been as excited if not more to get them.

Playing competitive is fun, winning is fun, but recreating childhood memories is priceless.

I very much want to see T-65s and TIE L/Ns back on the table. I want to see B-Wings back on the table. I want to see TIE X1s on top tables again. Etc.

Each of these ships is hurting in different ways. B-Wings can't survive current damage output. Tie L/N and Advanced can't put that damage out. X-Wings can't maneuver.

I am also weird in that I want to see E-Wings not piloted by Corran Horn be good. E-Wings are one of my favorite Star Wars ships.

And I think the game would be healthiest if the best ship were a PS1 Z-95. I know. Strange of me. :)

Z-95s have always been my favorite ship! I just seem to be really lucky with two dice.

Sometimes we play a HotAC-inspired RPG at my FLGS, and I always take a Z-95. The rules are that you can add anything you can pay for (but you have to pay a certain amount to add new slots). Once you’ve got a hull upgrade, a shield upgrade, and a Heavy Laser Cannon on that Z-95, it starts to seem really good! :P

How do you slap an HLC to a Headhunter? And how much did it cost to get that Cannon slot?!?!

Y-wing for me. If I was forced into Rebel Scum. Otherwise GUNBOAT Or Bomber if I’m feeling TIE-ish.

If I recall, it was two credits for the first cannon slot, then four for a second one... stuff got more expensive to keep modifying like that. Z’s are actually pretty good little ships for modifying in the EU... I’m surprised there isn’t a title that gives them a cannon slot in this game yet (although maybe for cannons costing five or less...)

I ran a campaign like that a little while ago that also had ground battles using Imperial Assault - guess which ship broke this game and I spent all my time as gamemaster trying (unsuccessfully) to kill? Here’s a hint: it starts with a J and there’s a distinct possibility that Dengar’s hairy butt sat on one in the lavatory...

With lots of duct tape!

Oh, sorry. This is the Star Wars universe. I mean, "With lots of...uh...dura...tape...plast...stuff!"

Perhaps the Z-95 could get several unique titles to reflect different modifications? "Your upgrade bar loses 1 <missile> upgrade. Your upgrade bar gains 1 <torpedo> upgrade," or "Reduce your primary attack value by 2. You upgrade bar gains 1 <cannon> or 1 <turret> upgrade," or "Your action bar loses the Target Lock action. Increase your Shield value by 2."

Maybe ships can start with a limit of Mods and new upgrade slots the same as a ship’s hull value, and EPTs every other PS value starting at ps 3. Let’s do it! Or just play HotAC I guess.

The Z-95 is just so freaking _average_. Average offense, average defense, average dial, etc. I love it.

And I think the game would be _really healthy_ if a 2 green 4 health ship could expect to live long enough to do enough damage with 2 attack to earn back 12 points. Right now, I don't think that's the case.

True. The fact that I actually have fun with the things shows that neither I nor any of my friends fly “the meta”. :D
