Happy little skeleton people

By Hepitude, in Runewars Miniatures Game

This is probably asking for trouble, but I have to say that I really like the Runewars Community. The overwhelming majority of players seem genuinely excited about the game and enjoy discussing painting, rules and new expansions. I've played x-wing for years and still hop over to their Community section every once in a while, but it's always refreshing to come back to people who aren't being mean, negative or complaining about the meta.

(I apologize to anyone who is offended by my exclusivity. Happy little elf, human and enraged demon people are included in this post as well)

I wonder how friendly the X-wing community was wave 1 and 2? Probably a lot more than it is now?

All I ever talk about is killing skeletons, demons, and humans.

that x wing community must be rough :)

It is pretty rough. I returnedto the game a few months ago and friends warned me to stay away from the Xwing boards.

Definitely looks that way. That said, I look forward the many a fun times slaughtering each others armies until we all become bitter demons of ourselves (when is uthuk releasing?)

oh its pretty bad. People are self-righteous jerks who think they know how to "fix" the game best (and every suggesting is horribly imbalanced its not even funny)

Part of its problem is just starwars fandom. I'd be surprised if RWM gets big enough to attract more than a couple of these kinds of people, but anything starwars immediately draws hundreds of thousands of them out from their caves under their mom's patio.

I'm eager to play with my new crossbowmen. I'd ask someone to play saturday but i got plans already.

The actual player community of X-wing is really good. The forum community is toxic though.

People here are reasonable, except me (as I'm a ****). I just need me some local players :D

I wonder if having to paint your minis culls out some of the toxic people. Which makes me wonder how Legion will balance out (fandom vs painting)

I do think that the IP changes things a bit. People get an idea of how star wars should be and when the game mechanics don't play out to that vision it can become disappointing.

With this being a unique IP hopefully that won't come into play as much.

I present to you: Warhammer 40k.

No, it doesnt. They just play with gray armies or buy a paintjob from someone else.

Probably the only reason i enjoyed 40k was because i found a click of people that were awesome to play with. Now i dont have them except for 1, and i dont like the game anymore as a result because everyone else is extremely self-righteous and toxic.

I was on the forums for the post-announcement/pre-release era for both Runewars and X-Wing. The X-Wing forums were really neat and felt a lot like Runewars does now. It was chased off by jerks during wave 2, so I'd say it didn't last long. I have high hopes for the Runewars community!

When I read the title, I really expected a Bob Ross style painting. I'm a little disappointed, but this is good, too.

How could anyone be mad when they just picked up death knights and crossbowmen this morning?

Oh, there are PLENTY of toxic model painters.

That's why I use acrylics.

Aaaah short answer is no, I play Warmachine and hordes one of the better tourney rules games out there and that forum became so toxic and unrealistic that Privateer Press closed it and started again. The new ones is already almost the same I would bet.

I get in fights with them occasionally...they can be very self-righteous about their specific method to the point that it can push people away from the hobby...

I was about to respond the same way....

I suppose you didn't tell them Darthain's workflow is the only acceptable method? That usually works :P

The times I’ve had fun playing Warhammer/40k were at GW stores and not LGS. The atmosphere at the GW stores tended to drive out some of the negativity, but it was slightly replaced with pushy sales people always ipselling the next hot army GW was trying to push. I’d also say playing less favored armies was fun back then, because the people sticking with, for example, Lizardmen or Dark Eldar weren’t the types trying to win every tourney anyway and realistically couldn’t. Meanwhile if you played, for example, VC or Space Marines you could expect heated debates on every little point in an army list.

One element I appreciate in Runewars is that we’re not at that micro-managing level where suddenly every point is a big debate. Sure, certain upgrades aren’t making it into every list, but no one is getting shut down for expressing their own usefulness of said upgrades. And the variety of neutral upgrades helps that we’re not seeing tourney level mirror matches that stagnate the meta - at the moment, every army and every army build seems reasonably competitive.

Not soon enough.

I live in the GW heartlands, which was great when I played Fantasy, but it now it feels like I'm trapped in a scientology compound. The toxicity is overwhelmed by the cult-like mentality of the fandom. GW could literally sell bags of liquefied puppies for £500 each, and every gamer around here would buy 7 and rave that it's the best company ever. Which is why it's so difficult around here to find people to actual play a miniature game that isn't sodding GW. At least the Fantasy scene is way better, because all the toxic players buggered off to 9th.

Saying with X Wing though, as toxic as it is, weirdly D&D Attack Wing was the exact opposite. Apart from one idiot, the fandom as a whole was super friendly. Though we were probably united in our suffering over how badly Wizkids screwed up and abandoned our beloved game.

Maybe the popularity of the franchise is directly proportionate to the amount of toxicity?
