@Armandhammer was asking me about the gaming mat I had pictured in another thread. So, here's a post to show it off and give some information.
The mat is a DeepCut Studio 'Stars' Mat
My table dimensions are a little funny 84cm x 140cm ( or 33 & 1/16th inches x 55 & 2/16ths inches). So I don't quite get a proper 3 x 6. It is an extendable table, so I can extend it over 6 feet, but I can't do anything about the short side being under 3 feet.
I wrote to DeepCut Studio using their custom link and they were only too happy make one to the dimensions and gave me a mat cost and postage cost. The company is based in Lithuania, some the costs were 42 Euros (mat) + 35 Euros (postage to Australia).
I chose the mousepad material option. As you can see in one of the pictures where I have rolled a portion of it up, it has a rubber-gripped underside, really staying in place. It has a firm softness like you'd expect from such a material. The clank of plastic dice on wood is gone, replaced by a gentle thud as the roll - it's quite a nice change. You can lean your elbows on it comfortably, the mat like a thin cushion.
I chose this Stars pattern from their website as it was unobtrusive. I felt that the planets or nebulae of other mats would detract from what I was trying to achieve. I originally wanted plain black, but felt a light star pattern would enhance the atmosphere. It will also double excellently for X-Wing and Armada. I also hope to get into Mansions of Madness (also painting those miniatures and doing away with their bases for clear acrylic) which I think adds to that great cosmic feeling of the setting. It'll be a great mat with many uses. It came rolled up in a cardboard which I use to store it.
