Push through impassable terrain lines

By Marcus2410, in Imperial Assault Rules Questions

Playing with Onar and Shyla last night and was confused about pushing through impassable terrain.

I have always assumed that figures cannot be pushed through impassable terrain lines.

RRG p13 States:

“Impassable terrain is represented by a dashed red line surrounding a space of the map. A figure cannot enter a space containing impassable terrain.
• Sometimes impassable terrain is only on one edge of a space. Figures cannot move or be pushed through this edge. Large figures cannot move onto, be pushed through, or be placed on an impassable edge unless they have a special ability that allows this, such as Massive or Mobile.
• Line of sight can be traced through impassable terrain.”

My problem with this rule is the FFG news page “A Step Above Scum” very clearly shows Onar in campaign play using his Rush ability to push a stormtrooper into impassable terrain. This seems to be focus of the paragraph. Especially with associated image and the image subtitle.

I can’t find an errata on this. Does anyone know which is right? I so badly want to push stormtroopers onto holoprojector tables and down elevator shafts with Shyla and Onar!

The RRG entry is correct. Unless the mission specifically allows it

one of Jabba's Realm campaign mission allows heroes (Onar?) to test Strength to punch Imperial troops into the Sarlacc pit

Don't read into the article too much, FFG marketing isn't that closely related to the dev team and this isn't the first time they've make a rules mistake in articles

Hmmm fair point, it is a marketing article.

But I do struggle thematically that stormtrooper can shoot over a wall but a Jedi can’t force throw someone over it??? Or that a muscle bound body guard can’t shove someone over a catwalk rail??? Oh dear…

I’d argue that spaces enclosed by impassable (and blocking terrain or edges) shouldn’t be pushable So as not to trap figures. However squares with a single edge (defensive walls, cliffs, handrails and pits etc.) should. Whilst Descent 2nd ed. went a bit crazy with terrain types, this kind of difference should be recognised.

Sometimes an impassable edge (impassable terrain placed between spaces) represents a cliff, sometimes a underbrush, a steel mesh fence, maybe a wall with holes. It's an abstraction and simplification. Figures (without Mobile or Massive) cannot move or be pushed through impassable terrain. The terrain exists on the tile for a reason.

A Jedi would not be able to throw someone through an opening less than the figure's size. Especially not in the Star Wars universe. Force Throws do not turn people into a pulp...

If a mission wants to use the tiles differently, it's possible with mission rules.

You can push Mobile figures through impassable and blocking terrain though right?

Yes. Push is movement (it's even described as such in the Push section), thus figures with Mobile or Massive can move (and be pushed) into and through impassable and blocking terrain and edges. (Which is also mentioned in the rules.)

As everyone has stated, you cannot push (non-mobile/massive) figures through impassible terrain. However, I'd like to add that the mission rules override RRG when there is a conflict. I believe the graphic is referencing a very specific mission. Actually, it looks like ricope and a1bert already hinted at this.

I think the confusion is this:

The terrain square itself isn't difficult / impassable; only the edges between squares are. So in that picture the storm trooper is being pushed through an edge that is difficult from the direction he is moving, but it would be impassable in the opposite direction.

You can climb down into the sarlacc's mouth, but you can't come back up again.

I don’t think that is the case. If you look at the picture, 3 squares down is a blocking/difficult line (red/blue). By the logic you lay out, Onar would be able to push a stormtrooper onto that square.

I think it is because of the mission rules that that push from Onar is allowed.

(Just to confirm: there are no one-direction impassable edges. It's just the mission rule which allows movement through them.)
