I'm sure that will give me 800 points per side so me and my friend can play around and get a feel for the game.
That brings the price to $320.
$320 to be able to field both sides of the table is really quite cheap in the Table Top Minis space.
I have just enough Necrons for a 2K list and it is about $600 or so spent. More on Tyranids...

This is my plan for Legion. I'm mainly interested in the Imperial faction. I'll buy the core and fully paint the Imperials. At that point, my plan is to purchase a Stormtroopers expansion and an AT-ST expansion. I'll paint those before buying anything else. At that point, I'll have $165 retail invested and will have a fully painted 800 point Imperial army with a variety of list building options.
Chances are pretty good that I'll do some painting in weeks 1 and 5, so this might actually only take 5 weeks or so total. The plan is to go with a dark grey scheme with red markings as the overall theme and some sort of unique squad markings. I want it to be obvious that this dude belongs to Squad #1 while that dude belongs to Squad #2. I like the classic white for Stormtroopers, but I'm pretty sure I'll see enough of those on the table without adding my own.
Once I'm happy that I have a fully painted Imperial army, I'll start work on the Rebels, using a similar schedule as above. I'm leaning towards a second AT-RT and a unit of Troopers versus getting an Airspeeder. I haven't worked out the points on the Rebel side yet.
The more i look at it the more i believe it will be tournament list driven, *if* ffg insist on a full set of genuine cards for the list.
Do you want targeting scopes on more than 2x rebel units...... you need 2 cores.
If the trooper upgrades in the trooper packs are unique or different to the basic +1 troop (and if not, why are they hidden?), you may need 2x cores.
Do you want impact grenades otr grappling hooks by more than 2x, you may need excessive expansions or ebay cards.......
*Le sigh*. Heres hoping they launch that list builder app and make it tournament legal..
I think, at least to start, I will be picking up 1 Core to test the waters with friends. Shortly after that, I'll pick up the Heavy Vehicle Expansion and an extra army expansion for whatever side I'm focusing on.
Only way I would buy a 2nd core would be if i had a friend playing an opposite army and he wanted to go splits so that we had extra cards and units.

You will want to buy one core, a dice pack, eventually a new ruler when the old one breaks/gets worn out, and of course at least one expansion of pretty much everything for the side you want to play and if you want to play both, sell a kidney.

I'm probably going to opt for 1 core and one of each expansion to start with, just so I can get all the cards too. I might pick up another core later (just because it seems to be the best value) along with another of each heavy. If there was anything I was going to go crazy buying up, it'd probably be terrain if they added that in too (due to my lack of general craftsy-ness).

They will be, that much is a given. It's a bit like the Legend of the 5 Rings LCG, before it came out people were asking how many types of tokens if any would be in the game. Those of us who play FFG games knew there would be a lot. Some people tried to argue that there may not be any, but knowing FFG that's like saying that rain may not be wet...
Same goes for this. There will be upgrades you want that are exclusive to the packs. It will hopefully be like Rune Wars where you only need to buy one faction, but you will want at least 1 expansion pack of every unit you field, or pick up the cards somewhere else.

I agree. They may very well provide a list builder app to help you build lists, but that's very unlikely to mean you will be able to show up without the required game components. If you have Grappling Hooks equipped, you will be expected to have a Grappling Hooks card at all official events... which for FFG games means the majority of events.

Why not two cores plus one heavy per faction? Spend less ($260) plus get enough dice to play the game *and* have maneuver tools for both of you? I mean, if you're just trying to get a feel for the game and all.
The more time I've spent reading, the more I think the only way I will buy a second core is if I split it with a friend who is playing the other faction.
I intend to focus on only one of the factions strictly for long-term economic reasons, rendering half of my two cores nothing more than painting practice. Additionally, it seems clear that the expansions have cards that the cores don't, meaning that I will likely want to buy the expansions for whatever side I'm playing anyway.

Then you miss out on any upgrades in the infantry xpacs. And knowing FFG, there will be options in them that aren't available in the core set.

Since the max number of Corp units is six, and the max number of support is three, if you decide to continue with the game there's still value in picking up the expansions down the road if the upgrades really prove to be must-haves.
I think based on all the big box sets that were released for imperial assault, they will do multiple cores.
I've only seen two people bring this up during my quick skim of this feed:
The expansions will have addition cards to add on to the Core Set, right?
I'm not going to preorder anything but 1x Core Set until I know what, if any, additional stuff is coming in those expansions.

we know there is a grenade with impact and an upgrade to help climbing terrian in the troops

I don't think you understand what those big boxes are...
Those are not core sets for IA, they're expansions. Just happen to be big expansions with a full campaign, as opposed to the small boxes which are expansions with mini-campaigns.
There's only one IA core. In fact the only game to get a second core set was X-Wing and that was largely done to release a new rule book and tie into the new movies.
Well let me put it this way, there will most likely be several "Big Expansions" for this game, judging on FFG's other titles.
