Nym-Poe

By theBitterFig, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Yes, Miranda is probably better if going for double small-ship, but Poe just seems like more fun.

Poe Dameron (PS9 Version) (47)
T-70 X-Wing (33), Black One (1), BB-8 (2), Advanced Proton Torpedoes (6), Primed Thrusters (1), Intensity (2), Autothrusters (2)

Captain Nym (50)
Scurrg H-6 Bomber (30), Veteran Instincts (1), Ion Pulse Missiles (3), Twin Laser Turret (6), Bomblet Generator (3), Havoc (0), Engine Upgrade (4), 'Genius' (0), Advanced Sensors (3)

So it's kind of a standard 47 point max Nym, and it's kind of a standard 41 point BB-8 Poe, but really I don't want a 12 point bid.

I figure Ion Pulse could be really handy on Nym. I know Cruise would fit in, but I feel like I play wrong with Cruise on Nym. I'm always trying to get set up with both Focus and TL, and I think I make mistakes because of that. I'd rather get a bit of control.

Advanced Proton on Poe, because he might be able to pull them off. With BB-8 to adjust positioning, a focus from Intensity, and a TL from the normal action, that's the dream. Spending the focus kinda wrecks you for next turn, though. It might be better just to take Plasma or Proton, and then give Extra Munitions to Nym, but way less cool. (⌐■_■)

*Edit* Post-nerf, Extra Munitions looking a lot nicer on Nym...

I would drop APT on Poe for Plasma Missiles. They make him stronger at range - 4 die attack, no range bonus, extra shield gone vs tanks - while APT only adds 1 die at range 1.

With Those extra points, change intensity to PTL. You don't have comm relay to stack evades since primed thrusters are great for bb-8. PTL will let you boost after your barrel roll and before your maneuver so you can wildly change where Poe is going - this is invaluable against multiple ship lists. It will also let you target lock + focus without ending stressed. This way if Poe is ever ignored he can punish them.

Keep any extra points for bid which you absolutely must have. That Poe cannot win moving after other aces - Num will have to focus any of them down before lategame.

Nym looks good but I would go with cruise missiles.

BB-8 Intensity can Evade from Intensity, then take a Focus action. Since Poe won't spend the focus during the turn except to flip Intensity, he's free to spend the evade every round he takes one. He'll probably spend far more evade tokens than an R2-D2/Comm Relay build, which can't get a focus and evade on the same turn. Intensity into focus still allows boosts or TLs. PTL is certainly an option, though. You'll be a bit more nimble, with the option to boost before moving after BB-8, but you'd lose access the evade, and you'd be worse off against things you can't arc-dodge. I guess it's a call against which you think you'll fight. My guess is there will be enough turrets out there for those evades to come in very handy. Intensity should be able to K-Turn or Tallon Roll a bit more freely than PTL, too, since you could boost into an Intensity Focus that turn, and won't suffer any after-effects the next turn.

As to Advanced Proton Torpedoes, they'd be so much fun, but they cost so darn much. They do a bit more than add one die, though, at least statistically, in that they provide so much modification potential. On 4 dice with Plasma Torpedos, Poe averages 3 hits if he's willing to spend focus, 2.7 or so if he's not. Proton Torpedoes go up to 2.95 without spending focus. There's only a 20-30% chance of 4 hits. Advanced Proton Torpedoes have nearly a 99% chance of getting 5 hits if you're willing to spend the the focus token. There's a benefit to having an attack which pretty cannot blank out on you, but they won't be as easy to use. Realistically, I'm sure Proton or Plasma are better, but when do you ever get a chance to put Advanced Proton Torpedoes on the table?

Honestly, I think this list suffers from 2 problems:

The missile/torp are counterproductive. A torp like Protons or Ions would better fit Poe's pilot ability. The missile is kinda weak. They also contribute to very high costs for only 2 ships.

Secondly, and more relevantly, when presented with the squirrelly, hard to hit Poe and the easy to hit, dangerous Nym, I think most people would burn down Nym tragically quickly, leaving the offensively lacking Poe to slowly get picked down. I think one reason why Poe/Miranda works is because target priority is hard, but it's easy here, leaving a clear progression to be torn down.

That being said, if you can really capitalize on Nym arc-dodging, then it could be potent.

That makes a lot of sense.

I put it together mostly because it seems like two ships which would be fun to play around with, get practice with. Why not double up? However, the points don't really work out great without adding filler missiles/torpedoes--possibly a sign that the core list might be insufficient.

Second, target priority weaknesses really makes sense. I think Nym should be relatively good at running away, but perhaps not quite good enough. A more traditional partner for Poe like Dash would be a good deal harder to kill than Nym, and still dish some damage.

Nym does have the potential to be as arc-dodgy, but it he doesn't dodge he'll burn, that'd be my big concern. I do agree that they'd be fun and good practice, so it could be worth something, but I'd try figure out a way to lose the projectiles and get in a third, small ship.

You mentioned not wanting a 12 pt initiative bid and therefore buffed the ships up. However, if you could thin it back down and free up 3 additional points, you could take a z95 with Cruise Missiles and Chips. Opponent cannot ignore that little bugger. Just an idea. These ships are too beefy for my tastes, although they look fun.

^A kitted out Nym is committed to kiting. That Poe flanks anything with a lower PS. Each is a fantastic closer and the long game will favors him.

Adding a 3rd ship simply offers an MOV target - and one that can be PS killed at that. If your opponent targets that third ship, you must commit your aces to help or concede the advantage. Knowing that, your opponent can leverage that 3rd ship into quality opportunities on your Aces. This is why we've seen a decline in the throw in ship.

The one exception to adding a 3rd ship here would be Ashoka with VI in a captured tie. Without looking at the numbers to see if it's points-viable, you could potentially pair down nym/Poe and use Ashoka to pass actions and arc dodge at combat.... But this is all tangential.

The cruise + plasma suggestion is so you could potentially range control an opening against a lower Ps.... ghost for example. I still think Ptl arcdodging will save you more damage, even vs turrets.

It wouldn't be too hard to find points. Without Missiles/Torps, Poe is 41 base, and it'd be easy enough to drop Engines on Nym and swap Advanced Sensors and Genius for Sabine. That'd bring Nym down to 42 points, with a total of 17 for a 3rd ship. I might be able to go deeper, but that's the really obvious stuff.

However, I tend to agree that a 3rd ship is mostly going to be a MOV target. I don't like Z-95s too much, personally. They never feel like they accomplish much.

With Ahsoka, I love her, but I just think there are too many PS 9 or higher ships out there to bring her. I love the Ahsoka and Navigator Hera list, but I can't justify it with the way PS tends to be these days. Plus, I'd really, really want to get Rey on her (so much versatility added), and that brings Ahsoka up to 22 points. When trying to give actions to nimble folks, the realistic minimum 19 point build just isn't going to be mobile enough. That'd leave 37 points for Nym, which a little too trim for my tastes. I'm sure someone else could fit in there (Wullffwarro comes to the top of my head), but then it really isn't anything like the original list.
