Fantasy Flight Interactive - Rokugan Meets Digital?

By Asako Michi, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

You guys realize this is FFG's version of Asmodee Digital, right?

They don't make new games, they digitalize existing card- and boardgames. As much as I'd love a MMORPG or Dynasty Warrioirs-like for L5R, it's not happening anytime soon.

While the official press release makes a comparison to Asmodee Digital, overall it sounds like they have plans for a bit more than just computerizing existing games.

Focused on not just adapting tabletop games, but creating fresh digital experiences based on Fantasy Flight Games’s most-beloved brands, Fantasy Flight Interactive has projects already in the works for Steam (and other platforms to follow).

“We didn't create a new company just to translate board games into digital games. We're focused on the bigger picture of the experiences our fans can have on new platforms, and this will take our brands in new directions,” said Christian T. Petersen, Founder of Fantasy Flight Games and CEO of Asmodee North America.

Oooooh, my bad, then, I must confess I didn't read the whole article and now I feel like a fool. :)

But this is much better news than I thought. :D

No worries. To be fair, the article makes no mention of Asmodee Digital, but the official press release gives more an impression of working on digital conversions of existing games, so at least to the public eye their objectives with the new company are a bit ambiguous. I'm sure once the official FFI site launches and they pull back the curtain to reveal these pending projects, we'll have a much better idea what it's all about.

Civiliazation

I have always wanted a Civilization: Rokugan . Make it so!

Now we will get a "rogue-like" game where you navigate the court systems of Rokugan, and by mispeaking or not successfully making a proper check, you have to commit seppuku and start over!

Personally I think l5r is a perfect setting for a game done in the same style as Telltale games. A rich story driven by player choices.

It'd be great if your choices had real impact on the story, not just determine which of your men will betray you and so forth.

You mean it's not normal to run around everywhere, talking to any random person you meet in hopes they have a job for you, and spending half a day killing random things to collect their skins/blood/body parts and sell to people you barely even know?

Yeah, pestering random people is very rude in real life.

That's why I only talk to strangers who have quest icons hovering over their heads!

Speculation on a digital version of L5R: the card game (an official version)?

I'm not hopeful, but this would be great. Since they own the property outright (they do, don't they?) they could bypass the licensing hiccups involved with most of their other LCGs.

I could totally go for Rokugan: Total War.

If there's a LotR mod for Medieval 2 and a Thrones mod for Crusader Kings, there's gotta be a Rokugan mod floating around somewhere for Shogun or Shogun 2

Why would FFG want to purposely make a boring video game?

OMK!

Imagine

Rokugan Warriors

Rokugan Tactics

Winter Court Puzzle Game

Oh the possibilities

I don't mod much, but I seem to recall hearing that Empire and Shogun 2 changed a lot of stuff that made modding a bit more difficult. In particular, I think people said that it was much more difficult to change provinces around to make a more fitting map.

Maybe they will make the Winter Court Dating game!

They'll farm that out to the H visual novel developers.

Start the game as one of the 7 Kami who founded a clan, then play through the years until you're the only clan left!

Lets not bring up this debate again.

However the Winter Court Dating Sim just writes itself.

I wouldn't get my hopes up for a large scale AAA game. I suspect they have just finally formalize their app development team that worked on games like Mansions of Madness and X-Com the Board Game.

If anything I hope this means they will finally do things like give us official deck building apps and an official online platform to play their LCGs.

They state that they don't want to do just that. I think we can maybe see things more like Hearthstone or Eternal, where they leverage digital formats to do board game like experiences than we will see a more official app team. We might see online implementations more like MTGO than the unofficial free stuff like Ringteki, but it sounds like they want to make real video games, not just continue to rehash stuff into a digital format.

As mentioned before Asmodee Digital already does the rehashing.

I could see an early thing being some form single-player/Co-op Android RPG.

They also specifically state in the announcement:

the designers and developers at Fantasy Flight Games will continue to create hybrid digital board games (like the aforementioned Mansions of Madness Second Edition ), while Fantasy Flight Interactive turns its focus to more expansive video game projects.

So while it's *possible* FFI might play a support role to the FFG team on those types of projects, that's not the plan for them at all. In fact, FFI isn't even based out of the same state as FFG, so it doesn't seem to likely they'll be collaborating very closely on any particular projects.

"Hey, can you mail us an artist? We are out and need some more for this L5R/Android Crossover game"

So it does say that. I'm legitimately surprise. That does make me happy because I've felt for a long time that the Android universe they created is going to waste right now. It totally could be leveraged in more ways than they have historically. Now we have an upcoming RPG and the possibility of video games in the setting. Also the idea of L5R based video games is super exciting.

An Android game: Elevator simulator clone.

Hopefully they learn from other smaller game studios and don't announce projects until well into the development cycle!
