Sector Map - Planets, systems or both

By VagrantWhisper, in Dark Heresy

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to wrap my head around what I'm seeing on the big map of the Calixis sector.

Would it be safe to assume that each named planet (ie. Scintilla), is only one, generally the most productive or settled, planet within a solar system in the sector?

The map displays as though the sector is just a scattered bunch of planets hanging out in space, but from what I understand from NASA and Neutonian physics, a planet must always rotate around a star. So do each of the planet types also have a star? Is there other planets within the Scintilla area?

Is each named location on the Calixis Sector map actually a solar system?

Thanks for any feedback.

Unless otherwise specified, it's safe to assume that each planet is the most/only important planet in the system. There are a few exceptions such as the Gelmiro System or 41 Pry, but the rest have to have a star nearby.

And no, you don't NEED to have a planet around a star. There are such things as "rogue planets".

Indeed, though such a planet would be quite inhospitable, to say the least gui%C3%B1o.gif . Could be a mining world, dead world, or a naval base, though.

Right, which was more to the point; particularly since on the map they DO make reference to some systems being part of the sector (Tygress, Zel, Stygian, etc etc), but don't make the same reference in relation to the other locations.

Having a bunch of "rogue planets" all over the place seemed really counter-intuitive to me.

Well as I said before I'd say that most of the planets are parts of systems. Do I have solid evidence? Well, not really, but I think that makes sense. After all, there are some specific examples that seem to support that point. Only Prol IX is marked on the map but the fluff says that it is in fact only one planet in the ten planet Prol system.

Most of the planets on the map refer to star systems. In some systems there are numerous settled worlds, though most only have one. If a system has more than one settled planet they are usually (though not always) marked on the map by being clustered together, such as the Tephaine system in the Adranti subsector, which contains the settled planets and moons Tephaine, Tephaine minor, Reth and Siculi.

Awesome, that's exactly what I was looking for. I only skimmed the fluff section on my last reading to get info like this, but missed it.

You would do yourself a huge favour by downloading a copy of the revised and updated sector map from FFG. The original map is missing several worlds entirely and has some duplicate entries. The update lacks the awesome "age of exploration paper map" look, but it is vastly more useful for planning out a DH (or for that matter RT) campaign that involves interplanetary travel. The revised map likeise makes the instances of multiple "usefull" worlds in the same star system VERY obvious, since it groups them together and circles the cluster of planets. It likewise classifies worlds by colour coding so you can pick out the agriworlds, hive worlds, dead worlds, forge worlds etc... at a glance.

I'd love to see a full blown "age of sail" style map like the one inside the DH corebook covers that encompasses the updated version of the sector map. A sort of "Mappa Calixia" like the old Mappa Mundi:-
