Is Legacy of Dragonholt Genesys Fantasy Basic Box Set?

By TheWizurd, in Genesys

After reading this article:

I came to the conclusion that this box set is derived from Genesys rules, perhaps not a true basic set, it doesn't appear to have dice, but it apparently does have character creation with classes, races and a skill system very similar to what we know.

No, it doesn't. It has classes, races and skills, sure, but so do many others and neither how you get them nor how you use them could be called similar to Genesys.

Anyway, we know LoD uses the Oracle System while Genesys uses the Narrative Dice System.

Ahh ok, will look into Oracle system to see what it is?

Yet another system FFG uses instead of its new "house system for every imaginable setting" Genesys :P

Though the main difference is a lack of the GM. Might be interesting to look at if you miss a willing gamemaster.

A google search for "fantasy flight Oracle system", which returned various FFG forum entries, seems to indicate that this is a complex/advanced "choose your own adventure" type of multiplayer game. It does not appear to be a "real" RPG.

I was under the impression that Dragonholt isn't a typical* RPG, thus typical RPG systems would not apply.

*I refuse to use the "real" qualifier. That's a subjective term

The Oracle system, and Legacy of Dragonholt specifically, is not a traditional roleplaying game. There is no DM. There are no dice. It's very much a gigantic, super complicated Choose Your Own Adventure book with a few key differences. You can play with more than one person and the skills/abilities you pick at the start of the game impact which choices you are able to make throughout the scenario. Yes, you're playing a role, but no, you can't do whatever you want. In any given situation, you will be forced to pick from a short list of possible actions.

Genesys is a traditional RPG.
