first player?

By Fu Leng, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

I was watching Team Covenants video. About 2 minutes in they raise the question of the first player. Does the player who wins the toss get to pick to go first or second, or does that player have to go first? I would like to know in case I actually find someone to play against here in the gamers showdowlands, Montana

Players determine who is first player. This should be done by flipping a coin, rolling a die, or another random process. The winner decides who is first player and place the first player token in front of this player. The other player starts the game with one additional fate in his or her fate pool.

Are you asking the tournament rules or the regular game rules?

In the regular game, the one who wins the toss is first player. As noted above, the tournament rules differ in that the winner gets to decide.

thanks.

i think it should be the same?

As long as you tell your opponent what happens after the tossing coin (winner first winner chooses) , I don't think it matters.

I actually really dislike they making it a player choice in tournaments. There is a lot of advantage of going second. 1 fate is pretty big on first turn and last conflict is also very useful

Who gets to make that choice is still randomly based on a coin flip. To me it's more intuitive. Let's say you stick with just flipping a coin to see who goes first. If you prefer to go second but you win the flip, you really lose because you didn't want to go first. This method allows players to choose, because there's going to be players who choose to go first, but those who want to go second can choose that if they win the flip.
