Mono-Tactics decks: How to improve the card-draw?

By Rajam, in Strategy and deck-building

I'm trying to build a mono-tactics deck, for multiplayer support in the combat department. I want to know how can you make these kind of decks fluent in the card-draw department. Which options do you have?

- Legolas Ally

- Foe-hammer

Anything else?

Steward of Orthanc

I'll grant that's not so friendly when it's multiplayer!

Core Gandalf

Keen as Lances & Legolas

You could potentially get access to Gandalf's Staff.

I have occasionally been known to use Keen as Lances without any of the Victory Display cards when I'm really hurting for card draw, too. It's not very efficient, though.

Mighty Warrior basically amounts to a single use Elven Light. Not great, but in in mono sphere decks sometimes I find that the deck thinning is more important to me than the wasted resource.

It's not technically card draw, but Open the Armoury is going to be great for Tactics. Similarly Gather Information can help you find the key pieces that you're missing.

Also noteworthy: Tactics Prince Imrahil is really great at reacting to a changing board state. Even if you don't have what you need in hand, you might be able to dig it out of the top few cards.

But ultimately I often find that I need to use other ways to make up for mono-Tactics' lack of card draw. If it's consistency I'm after, I include fewer concepts in the deck and double down on whatever features I think are core. I try to find substitutes for my key cards to ensure that I always have the answer I'm looking for.

Or, y'know, I ask if someone else can spot me some card draw. :)

You could use ally Bofur to search out some weapons.

Bofur and Open The Armory obviously open up Foe-hammer for even more draw.

Authraw mentioned it already, but Imrahil is effectively card draw. You are paying 1 resource to (typically) get a chump defender. It's like playing a feint or a defender, except it's from your deck instead of from your hand. So, that's equivalent to a card every turn that is in your hand instead of your discard pile.

Also, Hama is great for recycling Foe Hammers. Especially if you get him to attack more than once per turn. That way you can use the ability once to get your Foehammer back, then use it a second time to get your Feint, Thicket of Spears, etc. back. A deck with him and Tactics Aragorn was the only time I've been able to get enough card draw in tactics to make Keeping Count reliably good.

You also could build an Eagle deck and use The Eagles Are Coming! possibly many times with Book of Eldacar. Descendant of Thorondor got a lot better now that you can jump it out immediately after staging with Hirgon. Eagles are not a bad choice for multiplayer with those Ranged and Sentinel allies. It would also be a good opportunity to let some Eagle allies quest with their Grappling Hooks, just as Tolkien intended ;)
