Need help from my Armada Brethren....(X-Wing question)

By Deadshane, in Star Wars: Armada

I'm 46 years old, 2 kids 14 and 4. (b/c I love to CRUSH them in games...the little bastards...haha!)

I stopped collecting X-Wing once Armada came out. So around the time the K-Wing was coming into vogue....that was it for me. Done.

Armada is now my Jam...14 yo isnt really into it yet (or x-Wing truth be told) he is a bit special needs so the reading and math requirements of armada are a bit beyond him. X-Wing is graspable, but not really engaging for him.

I play Armada like Crazy with my Brother (50+) We hit the occasional tournament and play weekly.

I'm wanting to get into legion when it comes out because it will scratch my retired 40k itch. Skirmish battles.

Anyway, the question, what to do with all my X-Wing? I have lots.

65 regular based ships, rebels, Imps, and Scum

8 large based ships.

a shuttle and a corvette. (I'll keep the corvette regardless....cause cool toy!)

This stuff is gathering dust...not been touched since release of armada....what to do?

Store?

Sell?

Trade?

WWVD (what would Vader do?)

I think resale value is pretty low. When people buy up other people's collections they are usually looking for a pretty deep discount. But whether or not you should keep them really comes down to this question. Are you sure you are never going to play it again? Your sons aren't into it yet, but who's to say what they will be into in 10 years. Personally I'd keep the stuff. Lame metta doesn't matter when you are just playing with friends and family.

But if you do decide to trade or sell, I find the best place to look is on local gaming facebook groups. I am a member of my local GW games facebook groups mostly so I can sell/trade my warhammer stuff.

Think you answered your own question there. :)

Cut them up and make debris fields.

Join the X-Wing, Armada, and Legion trade/sell/buy groups on facebook. You're bound to find someone looking to buy or trade things with you.

I typically hoard things for the sentimental value alone. So unless you're hard up for cash or cleaning house, I'd hold on to them. You'll never know 2-5-10 years down the road will bring.

Perhaps you've already considered this, but Heroes of the Aturi Cluster can be good with kids, since it's cooperative (at least, for those times that you don't feel like crushing them!).

Are you or the kids EVER reasonably expecting to play X Wing again?

Answer A: Yes- keep most of it, sell your excess, store the rest.
Answer B: No- sell it individually, DO NOT SELL AS A LOT(people expect more of a discount on lots). Reinvest in another game that you and/or kids enjoy.
Answer C: Not sure- Sell most of your stuff, especially common/cheap/easy to get again. Keep anything rare, strong, or that you feel a sentimental bond to and either display it or store it.

Personal anecdote, 40K related since you mentioned it.
I last played 40K in mid-2013. I took a break for a couple of editions(6th and 7th editions of debauchery or douchebaggery depending on how you look at it  )
In 2015, I figured I was never going to play again so I sold everything(about 70-100K points worth of Marines, Tau, IG, Eldar, you name it) except some stuff I was sentimental about.
I am going to play my first game of 8th edition this weekend.
I am now going to have spend more than I did the first time around to get a shadow of the collection that I used to have.
Morale of the story: Be careful with what you sell as you might find that you get pulled back in again one day.

Never sell a game. You will regret it at some point. You'll have an attack of nostalgia and want to play, not like it costs anything to keep it in a box some where. And who knows one day your kids may want to play.

Also these kind of thing tend to only get more exspensive down the line.

That is just my opinion though even if im not active in agame atm i always seem to circle back to it, and i figure it cheaper to store it than to buy it all over again. Plus all that time and effort you put in if you bulid/paint yourself, if you are into that for xwing.

Just don't forget that :

Armada, X-Wing, Imperial Assault and Legion are maybe 4 Star Wars games but each of those games is different from the other!

Keep everything ;)

Even if I would never play them any more, Armada models make a darn fine display. I would never sell them and maybe my grandson would be interested to play... The same goes for X-Wing I think.

He would alter the deal, and you would pray that he did not alter it any further.

I'd look for sold lots of X-wing miniatures on Ebay that are similar to the lot you have. Decide if what they are going for is in the ballpark you'd find acceptable to get for it. If it is then you have an asking price for your stuff in whatever venue you'd care to try and sell it. If they aren't in the range of what you'd want keep it. You should also be able to figure the online retail value pretty easily and see how that compares to what the stuff is likely to go for.
