There are several different cards and abilities that say to place fate on a character after certain situations, such as Enlightened Warrior and Matsu Beiona (there was a conflict card that also said it, but I forget which).

Does this fate come from the player's fate pool, or just from the pile?

These effects place fate from the pool onto the character.

To be absolutely specific they place it from the general fate pool not a player's pool.
