What pilot do you try to make "work"? (But just doesn't)

By Jadotch, in X-Wing

For me, I keep trying to make Eaden Vrill work in my list, and unfortunately he just does not. For awhile he was a fun sacrificial lamb when Dengaroo was a thing. Dash + Eaden was an awesome counter to this list, Dengar was always stressed, giving Eaden that one extra attack dice. So I blocked Dengar with Eaden and attacked Manaroo with Dash. Usually by the end of everything Dash came out healthier against Manaroo giving Dash the edge against Dengar. (2 casual games I played.) Since then I have not had much success. Especially with bombs. Still I search for a decent Eaden Vrill list. (One reason I am such a big fan of making Raymus Antilles for all ships, just not Huge Ships.)

So it goes to my basic question, what pilot do you keep trying, that almost works in game play, but ends up falling short?

*Sorry about the double post. I think I double clicked submit.

All of them.

I also tried Eaden for the longest time. And Keyan Farlander - the greatest pilot ability in the game, trapped on one of the worst ships.

I also really like Tetran Cowall. EPT, flexible dial, good pilot skill, but he’s an Interceptor, so he still pops pretty easily.

Right now, I’m trying to find a use for Gamma Squadron Veterans with Cruise Missiles, Deadeye, EM, and Guidance Chips. Sure, you can fit four of them and they can pretty easily deal 20 damage a round, but they’re still TIE Bombers...

This sounds fun. I want to branch out of always playing Rebels. Maybe I will try something similar.

It’s been a lot of fun! They’re great against epic ships. And generic swarms usually get nuked right off the board before firing. Very enjoyable in any normal, fair dogfight. I actually find it very fun and thematic to get arc dodged and have to fly around the board to line up a shot.

The problem is that it’s pretty easy for your opponent to send one high-PS large-base turret ship at you, kill one bomber, not get killed by the remaining three, and then turret them to death while they try to turn around. Arc-locked ships don’t do well against these pancake NPEs.

"Are you a mid range PS pilot? Do you lack an elite talent? Was the last time you saw daylight the first time you were taken out of the expansion box? Then THIS is the topic for you!"

There's a guy in my play group that's been playing Eaden a lot lately to try to get his ability into play. I find his latest iteration of triple PS3s to be something to fear. It might not be tier 1, but it's definitely close enough that you have to take great care when facing it.

Ive tried, and have had only very modest success, to play Turr Phennir, zertik Storm and tomax Bren.

Fun fact, Zertik is the only pilot in the game from the original Marvel comics. Therefore, I have played and lost many, many games with him.

I am still waiting for the day when Don-Wan Kihotay arrives and brings balance to the Force.

Pilots I've tried hard to make work but have abandoned:

Every T65 except Biggs

Every U-Wing pilot

Ten Numb

What are you talking about? Keyans a beast!

e/2 title

kyle katarn

ept of choice

you have mods for offense and defense, and your dial is pretty much open all the way around. Clocks in around 34-38 points depending on ept.

For me it's arvel. Green leader is cool it's just hard to make him work. Also only 1 ept with the title hurts him. If he had dual epts then we'd have something to talk about.

ideally you want a missile on him, but to make that work you'll need a target lock, which means you have to fly him in range of whatever you want to hit the round before, so you need autothrusters, which will be wasted the next round when you run up and bump. Also forgot to mention how much he likes VI so he can bump a lot of stuff. He would really love advanced sensors or the new advanced optics tech coming out. There might be something with coordinate on the new phantom 2 but idk.

I think the best build for him is just chardaan + title + intimidation and he makes a cheaper wedge essentially. Could also throw AT back on him, but then you're at 25 points. Which you might as well take Biggs or Jake for that point cost.

Oh and nowadays people just take zeb crew if they want to bump n shoot.

you basically have a ps 8 defender for 29 points. (3 atk dice, 3 agility most of the time, 6 hit points). No shields means things will hurt, but I really like this set up on him. Oh and infinite crackshot is nice.

Funny! @FlyingAnchors, we must just have opposite local metas. That 23-point Arvel build has messed up just about every opponent I’ve run into (literally) with it! I even won a game against the guy who went on to win the tournament (I was the only one who beat him all day) by killing Soontir Fel with that Arvel on the last round of the game - right before it would have gone to time!

Fel's Wrath.

I've been flying Porkins and having a great time getting him blown up, but he's superb compared to Fel's Wrath!

All we need is a Interceptor-only modification that’s Biggs’ ability, and Fel’s Wrath instantly becomes an NPE.

Well part of the problem is I only ever dig arvel out for epic team games because there's a guy at my store who loves a-wings and so as not to create any awkward clones I fly arvel and he flies the other aces usually.

that's funny arvel got Fel!

It was hilarious. My list was all four named A-Wings, and he was totally winning on MOV - Arvel was my last ship. Fel was on full health, so he bumped me to try to end the game (he forgot my ability). Long story short, I One-shotted him, rolling three hits to his three blanks and a focus. :P

Do you give him that RNG droid that removes damage cards or do you go full "I can hold it!" Mode?

Juno Eclipse for me. I can never put her together in a way I feel is effective.

Jakku Gunrunner

Every time I play with him I feel very restricted by the dial, and I also find it extremely difficult to get the balance right for running him as a useful distraction; it's easy to veer too aggressive or too cautious, making him either a sitting duck or a lame duck. He's never the danger duck I want him to be.

Which is a shame because I think " assign a tractor token as an action" ought to be really good, I just always finish the games with him realizing that it's not quite good enough to justify this guy for me.

I do like Juno. She’s nowhere near as good as Vader, but I do enjoy running her with VI, Cruise Missiles and Engine. She’s really tough for the opponent to bump, and she’s got great range control—I played her against Asaaj a couple weeks ago and Juno was very good at avoiding that stress arc.

Me, I’m always trying to make the B-Wing great again...but it’s an uphill battle.

I really want to make the Quadjumper work too. So far I've been trying it with Pattern Analyzer and Spacetug Tractor Array, and... it's okay? That said, I'm also running four of them. It's hilarious putting 2-4 tractor tokens on something, but they just don't do much other than that. :/

Not even close to being a Defender. No white K-turn, no title that gives you an evade (still good despite the nerf), LWF is good but not as good a native 3 agility, UR needs a focus to work, and no shields to protect against crits. Also, the biggest problem with Tomax is his ability w/ Crackshot is almost too good. He can be dangerous if left alone so he always seems to be the first thing your opponent starts shooting. He just does not have the durability to give you much in return for the points. At least in my experience.

Rebels are the best.
