3x50 competitive format. Maybe 3x60

By TylerTT, in X-Wing

Each player brings three lists of fifty or less squad points each. No list may share the same unique pilots or any upgrade cards.

At the start of each game players review each other’s lists and remove one of their opponent's lists.

The players then play using their two remaining lists.

Goal : Improve the diversity of ships flown and played in competitive X-Wing. Give players a little control over what they have to fight against.

The “ban” is a common feature of online competitive games, it is a player determined balancing mechanism that cuts the most obvious and powerful strategies out of the game.

also the name is a fun meme so that ought to help it spread right?

(also why I don't want to allow upgrade cards between the lists is to prevent players from taking the same generic pilots kitted out the same exact way in all their lists.)

Dagum loch ness monsta! I ain't given you no tree fiddy!

If it seems fun to you, get your friends to play it with you.

Personally, I think I'd rather do something like a reverse-pick Hangar Bay, where each player brings two full lists, and the opponent would chose which one they want to fly against.

Problem with 50 points is that it can be hard to fit 2 ships in a 50 point list.

You would probably end up with 2 generics with some upgrades or 1 ace and a 12 point ship

looking at it really quickly I could create a decent Whisper and throw a Tie fighter in for 12 points

Whisper (32) - Advance Cloaking Device (4) Fire Control systems (2) (38)

Tie Fighter (12)

and for Rebels you could do

Ten Numb (31) - Mangler Cannon (4)

Z-95 Headhunter (12) - Cruise Missile (3)

The idea looks fun but I feel it would just drop into an ace off.

I'm interested in what your other two lists would be for rebels and empire.

I'm also interested if anyone has another way to split the pie so to speak.

bring two lists and the opponent chooses is interesting and I think war machine does something like that.

what about 3 60 point list that result in playing 120 point game?

I think 60 may be a better sub list, but I'm not sure.

Are there additional list building rules? I'm certainly NOT a fan of allowing an opponent to dictate what a player must use especially as I see it penalizing those with smaller collections and less list building experience even more than they already should be. How's that? It's pretty simple; if a person has/can make one good list but then only two more lists that are so-so is it really fair to just remove that players one good list?

While I don't like opponents being able to say you can't play something were I to go with this "bring three lists" thing I'd go with the following:

  1. Exchange lists
  2. Choose which list your opponent would not be able to use.
  3. Return list where player sees which list is no longer available*
  4. Players select from remaining choices and then reveal to each other simultaneously.
  5. Variation is that restricted list is withheld and then a 1st and 2nd choice list are selected before the restricted list is revealed; you play the 1st list unless it is the restricted list.

60 points would be easier and more familiar. The Escalation format typically starts with 60 points, but this format would allow single-ship builds, like Rey or Dash or Dengar. It'll also be easier to get a coherent mini-swarm. 4x Crack Blacks, or Howlrunner and 3x Onyx Squadron. Meanwhile, a 35ish point ace could have a 25ish point filler, which is a lot nicer.

Sounds like an interesting idea. I might have to try this sometime. I agree with those suggesting 60 point sublists- 60 points is a lot easier to work within.

@StevenO I think you missed the point. Go reread the OP’s post. Most players will be able to put together 150 (or 180) points of decent ship no problem, and if they can’t then they’re probably not going to do that well in a regular tournament anyway. I don’t know anyone who only has ~100 points of quality ships in their collection.

The three sixty format also has a good ring to it!

Makes you an All Rounder of Xwing!

A couple recommendations I would make from playing low point value (36 - 50) games.

  1. Two ship minimum rule. Otherwise you may as well hand the win over to a fully kitted out Dengar (or Miranda).
  2. If not, ban Lone Wolf. This is way under-costed in setting where 1 ship is typical.
