Let's not kid ourselves- this is the Missile Boat expansion in disguise

By Norsehound, in X-Wing

Think about it.

The XG-1 never had SLAM. It was very easy to get behind it when you were flying an X-Wing. What these did in the simulators was basically what Y-Wings did for the Rebellion: Ordnance attack, ion cannon assault support, missile backup. They were not legendary dog fighters by much... but they did pack a lot of weapons in a very flexible platform.

So while it's great to finally have the canon carrier I always suspected the XG-1 would be... that the dial is designed for SLAM use, it gets a SLAM, incredibly good combinations for missiles (Just read the OS-1 title), it feels to me like you can practically show up to a tournament with a Missile Boat Proxy and nobody would tell you it's a different ship based on the way it performs. The only thing that stands out is attack 2, but let's stay realistic- you won't be using primary attack on this ship unless you're forced to.

I'll probably be ordering one of Mel's Missile Boat models for X-Wing near the end of my lunch break, because while it's not the first combination I'll fly with my Assault Gunboats (That will be F/G Rho with some combination of sweeping cannons), inevitably I'll be pretending (easily) this is a missile boat, and destroy my enemies with a primary armament of concussion missiles.

What do you guys think?

I agree. At least it’s still “in disguise”. That thing is ugly.

I like looking at other renditions better, but I agree it's kind of derpy.

not seeing it, still strikes me as a ship with a flexible build path that is neither one nor the other until you build it a certain way. OG-1s are more flexible with SLAM but also less flexible because of the TL requirement for ordnance (which is a real **** issue against higher PS). XG-1s have more modifiers with linked HLCs and crackshot that don't require modifiers or TLs to shoot, but they can't SLAM and shoot. Both builds have their own merits.

so, it is neither a gun nor missile boat. It is whatever you customize it to be

...unless you're Vynder (then you have to take ASLAM OG-1 to have your ability make any sense) or Karsabi (then you don't give a **** about OG-1 because your ability takes care of wep disabled but does not allow ASLAM due to stress, so XG-1 it is)

or are we just talking ito fluff? In which case, just bring up the idea of proxied models with your TO to make sure you're clear to use them

It has features of the Missile Boat. I flew TIE Fighter for hours upon years, and the Missile Boat was fast when you boosted (SLAM), but once you ran out of Concussion Missiles (& there were A LOT), you didn't have a chance taking down the enemy with a single front facing laser cannon. If your mission objectives were to destroy something & you had zero missiles left, it may as well be game over because the Missile Boat's single laser cannon was like going in the front lines with a single pistol.

The Gunboat that ffg is selling seems to be HEAVILY armed & modified - so we will see how it plays out in tournaments.

I do hope that ffg produces the Missile Boat though & makes designs it's play true to the TIE Fighter sim:

Strengths: fast, heavily armed, short term aggresiveness

Weaknesses: requires ACCURACY, once your missiles are gone, the ship becomes an ineffective offensive threat

I was JUST about to post this exact topic. Couldn't agree more.

The only thing it would need to truly be a missile boat is:

  1. A 1-die primary
  2. A different model.

My point is that the expansion feels, through upgrade cards, dial, and provided actions suggest the ship is designed to perform more like the missile boat.

To be more like the xg I would have expected a natural cannon upgrade, no SLAM, and some reverses on the dial. If there's special ordnance tricks, it's in switching missiles to torps and bombs (as ordnance was flexible in the sims).

The OS title let's you carry two torps and two missiles, SLAMs, and let's you reload for almost endless ordnance. I can't see how you could represent the missile boat better, but I can think of ways to represent the xg better.

This isn't a complaint- I'm happy with what we're getting- it's just an observation.

I don't doubt that you're right about this being a combo Gun/Missile-boat, but I prefer to be overwhelmingly naively optimistic and look at it from this angle:

If this is how great the Gunboat is, just imagine how awesome the Missileboat will be!

The OS-1 is obviously the missile boat.

Yeah. OS-1 is the Missile Boat. The XG-1 is the Gunboat.
