[Ruling wanted] Display of Power + Hotaru

By KnightRadiant90, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

I understand that the current ruling with Hotaru is that her ability does not work on the defense, simply allowing your opponent to resolve the ring.

Assuming I splash Phoenix, what happens with Display of Power? This allows me to resolve a ring as if I were the attacker and then claim the ring. Could I then use Hotaru's reaction to resolve the ringa second time since I resolved and claimed the ring as if I was the attacking player?

Thanks.

No, Hotaru's reaction would still resolve the ring as if your opponent were the attacking player.

That is assuming you got Hotaru into a conflict somehow after it was over since Display of Power requires you to have lost the conflict unopposed.

Thanks, missed that part. I'm trying to look for any incremental increase in power/value that might justify her inclusion over similarly costed characters in the upcoming cycle.

You don't need to. Kakita Yoshi is just THAT much better. He is basically the new clan champion of the crane now. ;)

His pack can't come soon enough!

I feel the same way about Isawa Kaede. I really like that 5 cost characters really have a punch on them.

If I could add a similar question, what happens when you are being attacked by an opposing Toturi or Hotaru, and you use Display of power on defense? Do they still claim the ring (since this is a reaction event) and at least get to use their ability to get a ring effect as well, or do you get the single ring and deny them both ring effects at once?

Thanks!

Display of Power triggers before the ring is claimed by either player. Toturi and Hotaru trigger on claiming the ring. Since Display of Power happens first, Toturi and Hotaru never have their triggering condition occur, since you claim the ring instead of them.

Awesome, thanks. So the claiming of the ring happens outside of (and before) the typical game-based claiming as a part of the conflict? (Rephrased: the game state action for the winning player to claim the ring occurs *after* Display of Power is used?) And because of this, the ring is already claimed and isn't available to be claimed again by the conflict resolution process?

Is that an accurate understanding? After Display of Power finishes resolving, the game proceeds to then try to have the Toturi/Hotaru player claim the ring, but that action fails because it's no longer contested? If so, is it possible to claim a ring that's not in the contested zone (in theory, since such a card does not exist yet, I think)? I'm just curious what is preventing the game from going and 'reclaiming' the ring, so to speak.

Correct. Once the ring is claimed by Display of Power (step 3.2.3) it is no longer contested to be claimed by the Victor (3.2.7)

Man, whenever someone pulls up the Rules Reference it makes me feel lazy for not doing the legwork myself. Thanks for digging it up for me Shosuko!

This is true for now, but given the circumstances around the clarification I expect the FAQ when released is going to have an errata allowing Hotaru to use the Ring in defense.

I dunno, they were pretty quick to follow up with clarification on the Crab holding ability. FFG has been aware of this one for awhile now and not a peep. Maybe it's not as cut and dry as we anticipated.

What was wrong with the crab holding?

Because of a loophole in the rules, the Crab Holding Borderlands Fortifications could be switched with your stronghold...which was just a really big can of worms, so the Rules Reference was updated to state that the stronghold cannot be moved.

Ah ok. Never considered that an option since I assumed that strongholds weren't holdings.

Thanks
