So how many of you have decided on a clan loyalty?
I've only played 3 so far but can't say I feel too inclined to stick with a clan (for life), I have a couple clans I like the best but I also feel they may not yet competitive enough...

In the end, when everything is said and done, after all rankings have been tabulated, Clan Phoenix will inherit what will be left of Rokugan.
It is thus written.
So, choose wisely. ?

My loyalty hasn't change. For Hida!
In the LCG I find value and entertainment in playing all of the clans. I feel FFG has done a great job making them all interesting. In my heart I will always favor Dragon.
Always loyal to Rokugan!
I will defend all the ungrateful clans from the terrors that you thought were fairy tales.
My first rpg character was a Hida Crab. He died very shortly, in a battle against an Oni. Crab are underappreciated by the empire, though, and may end up being my clan of choice.
My second, and best character, was an Isawa ishiken. He died an ignoble death in disgrace, but I think I like the clan mechanics best ![]()
I haven't settled on one or the other yet, but I don't see myself playing any of the others, with the *possible* exception of Unicorn. I think if I can't make Phoenix work, I'll try Crab, and if that doesn't work, hopefully Unicorn fits for me. Otherwise.... I might just be bad at this game! : O
Scorpion and Phoenix. I started the old game with Phoenix and ended up with Scorpion near the end.
I loved Crane Duelists in the CCG but I despise the dueling system in the LCG. My second favorite clan is becoming my favorite, which is Scorpion. My old favorite (Crane) is the clan I hate playing the most. Really hope the dynasty packs change my mind.
I'm going to say this for all the new players of this game that may stumble across this as someone who played L5R from spirit wars forward. Do Not...i repeat DO NOT develop clan loyalty. It is simultaneously the best and worst aspect of this IP. Rather than accepting a card game model, where you feel comfortable picking one of the current strongest 4-5 deck types, you'll eventually get salty and upset when "your" faction sits at the bottom of the heap for any length of time. Clan loyalty is a trap that will give most of you a temporary boost of enthusiasm and make "your" factions time at the bottom that much worse.
By all means have a favorite, play them often, or even mostly. Do not develop loyalty to a LCG faction, it will at some point ruin the game for you.
Loyal to Dragon, then to Phoenix. Dragon is what I played years ago, when I was fumbling my way through the mess of the game, and it's still the Clan with whom I most identify.

I have clan loyalty. However, that does not mean that I will singularly play this clan. I'll play them at World's, but I'm playing other factions before and after.
I think the LCG format allows for easy access to all the clans (by virtue of having all the cards), and I think that FFG's done a great job making each clan feel and play distinctly. The did this without making any of the clans feel particularly betrayed or unrecognizable.
I am loyal to Dragon, but I do not hold them atop a pedestal. I look forward to their triumphs and anguishes, both in story and gameplay. I am familiar with the woes of those who played NBN in Netrunner, and so I say to those of you now entering, "Get attached, but accept change. Be like water, and flow in new directions when a path is closed to you."
Scorpion from start to finish.
I must confess.....I'm Crane. I love the new rules and how they pertain to Crane (dueling especially) and am working up a Crane deck now that I have my Core sets. Dueling is a part of it and so are cards allowing me to draw cards which then lets me consistently dial low for card draw. Will it work? No idea yet but experimentation is the first step to good deckbuilding.
Edited by JoelistI have and will always be loyal to the Scorpion.
I'm a Mantis at heart, but during the Emperor edition, as there were too many Mantis in my playgroup (we're men of good taste!), I switched to Unicorn to play something else than mirror matches each week.
So no, as long as there is no Mantis clan for me to play in the LCG, I'll be a Unicorn (always be a Unicorn if you can be one), but that has never stopped me from playing decks from other clans.
Of course, I'll favor playing my Corn deck to prepare for tournaments, but as I like to always have two deck at the ready, I always bring a deck from another clan to playing sessions.
With my three core sets, I managed to build three deck with barely a few proxies, so it's now even easier.
You can be clan loyal, and make progress for your clan when it matters, but nobody should keep away from playing other clan now and then, as it's one of the greatest advantages of the LCG model. You have access to all the cards, take advantage of it.

But...but how can that be!? The dueling system is so horribly broken and awful and dishonorable. And I can come up with a better system in 30 minutes, hold my beer!
In the old CCG some clans were more interesting to play than others, a few where really boring just stacking strength, but from what i've played in the LCG all clans got interesting actions and themes.
You can play anything, but loyalty does not came from playing but from the lore of the clans. Cards came and go, sometimes a clan is more OP, other times is so nerfed you wanna cry... but loyalty remains. You enjoy playing your clan when its on top, even when all those bandwagoners come along ¬¬, and you try to keep up when your favored clan is the underdog. Well, in fact winning is nice, but winning with your clan when no one gives a **** for it, thats glory ![]()
mcd makes an interesting point on clan loyalty. Relevant for ultra competitive players only I think.
for me I was ccg crane and am enjoying lcg crane. I may dabble in crab occasionally. In casual I will probably play sub optimal test decks of all the others. Competitions we'll see how it runs..
I'm still loyal to my original clan back in the days of the old CCG -- Fox Clan (and Yoritomo's Alliance/Mantis by extension).
But unless and until they (or at least the Mantis) become an option again, for the moment I'm going out of my way to support the Crab in remembrance of a dear, departed friend.
Pony. Pony for life.
Or in my off time, Lion. You don't have to be 100% clan loyal, play around a little.
Im Lion since I started in gold edition.
And really liked the new game, but Im getting more fun playing other factions right now.
I always liked the Tactician decks, in core set Lion is reduced to honor (I really dont care too much about this) and swarm, I fell is lacking strategy for Lions, but I hope this change soon with new releases.

I see what you did there.

Dude I promise you, the competitive players winning tournaments were not primarily the clan loyal, the competitive tourney folk bent with the tides for the most part. It was the by and large casual fan, which didn't stop them from getting bent out of shape when their faction wasn't winning anything.
wasn't a lot of that people who couldn't win if their clan was top tier using that as an excuse as to why they were not winning?
Saying that if you start believing such things then that might cause players to quit thus reinforcing the basic premise...
I always took Loyal as just being just L5R terminology for favorite. I'd consider myself Unicorn Loyal, it's my clan, but I am by no means going to refuse to play other clans. And I'll always try to make Uni the best I can. And as the clan that's the weakest, I am not upset with being a loyalist to them, or the game for having me on the bottom.
But those are my thoughts on loyalty. Find who you are happy with, have fun with them. If you really like them, be a loyalist, and make them the best clan.
