Fog of War Swituation Deck

By Darth Meanie, in X-Wing

Never one to rest on my laurels, may I present:

Edit: Made a number of revisions, clarifications, and additions. Dang, guess I'm on 2.0 already. . .

Fog of War Swituation Deck

The fog of war is “the uncertainty in situational awareness experienced by participants in military operations. The term seeks to capture the uncertainty regarding one's own capability, adversary capability, and adversary intent during an engagement, operation, or campaign.” (Wikipedia).

To increase the unpredictability of events in play, players may elect to use “Swituation” cards. Each player choses a hand of cards during list building. There is no point cost to any of the cards, and they are not faction specific. Cards may not be changed out during play, and ideally the choices from the deck should be in place before the seeing his opponent’s list. For every 100 points of ships, a player may choose 3 cards. A player may not select more than 2 the same card to be in his/her hand. The card may be played at any time (unless specified by the card), and the effects are instantly resolved. Then, the card is discarded and may not be used again in the game.

You’re All Clear, Kid = If you hit, cancel all damage and perform a barrel roll with your intended target. The ship may leave the table edge, bump another ship (and lose its attack), or land on an obstacle (and lose its attack).

Not This Ship, Sister = Remove all Target Locks from your ship.

I’d Call It Luck = If you ship has a lower PS by 5 or more than its target, add 2 dice to your primary attack.

Don’t Get Cocky = Your target may not use Focus or Evade tokens for this attack

Asteroids Do Not Concern Me = For the turn, you may ignore the effects of all obstacles

Nice Shot! = Add 1 Hit result to your primary weapon attack

See If You Can’t Lock That Down = Remove one face-down damage card.

I Can Hold It! = Treat this card as an Evade Token

Hit The Brakes = If you have chosen a Straight maneuver, reduce it by 1. Assign your ship a Stress token. Small ship only.

I’m Coming Around = If you have chosen a K-turn maneuver, you may instead perform a U-turn.

Pull Up! Pull Up!! = If you have chosen a 3 Bank Maneuver, you may perform a 4 Bank.

Fastest Hunk of Junk in the Galaxy = If you have chosen your highest straight maneuver, increase it by 1. For a 6 Straight, use a 5+1 Template.

There Is No Try = If you ship was performing a reversal maneuver (K-turn, Sloop, T-roll) and bumps, you may still perform the reversal. Suffer all other effects of the bump.

I’m on the Leader = If your ship is attacking the highest enemy PS ship, add 1 attack die

I am One with the Force = Perform an Action on your Action bar.

A Few Maneuvers = Perform any repositioning Action you have.

You’ve Turned Off Your Targeting Computer! = Treat this card as a Target Lock or Focus requirement for a missile or torpedo card.

It’s Away! = You may fire a second Torpedo or Missile this turn.

It’s a Dud = Prevent all damage from a bomb or mine

3,720 to 1 = During the Set Up phase, deploy up to 3 additional asteroids.

Never Tell Me the Odds = During the Set Up phase, deploy up to 3 fewer asteroids.

They Told Me They Fixed It = Assign 2 ion tokens to a Large ship, or 1 Ion token to a small ship

Chaff Dispenser = Roll 2 additional Agility dice against a missile or torpedo attack

No Ship That Small Has a Cloaking Device = Roll 1 additional Agility die against all further attacks this turn

The Ship No Longer Appears On Our Scopes = Cancel an attack when it is declared. Discard all tokens assigned to your skip. Assign your ship a Stress token.

That’s One in a Million = If you do a Critical damage, search the damage deck and choose the card to assign

One More Hit And We’re Done For = If the target ship has any shield tokens, roll 1 additional attack die.

I Have You Now = You may look at one opponent’s dial before activation. You may then change one of your dials.

Intensify Forward Firepower = You may attack a ship at Range 4 with your primary weapon.

Noble Sacrifice = You may discard 1 Crew card to prevent 2 damage.

Delusions of Grandeur = Prevent the use of a pilot’s special ability until the end of the turn

Beasty Thing! Shoo!! Shoo!!! = Prevent the use of a Crew cards ability until the end of the turn

Malfunction in Fire Control = Treat that ship’s primary weapon range as 1 lower. No attacks at Range 3, +1 AGI for defender at Range 2, no attack bonus at Range 1.

I’ve Altered the Deal = Move your TL to a new ship within range 2 of original.

Tighten Up, Boys = You may use a Focus or Evade token from a friendly ship within Range 1 as if it were your own

Mine! Mine!! Mine!!! = One ship may use cards and tokens for Minefield Mapper

The Turret’s Jammed!! = Target ship may only perform Primary and Secondary Turret weapon attacks in the Primary weapon arc.

Double All Shields!! = Double your shield value for 1 attack. After the attack is resolved, divide the remaining shield value by 2, round down, and assign that many shield tokens to your ship.

Fly Casual = You may not be the target of attacks this turn. You may not attack this turn.

Death Mark = At the beginning of the game, choose one of your ships and one enemy ship. You ship rolls 1 additional attack die when attacking the opponent’s chosen ship.

I’ll Try Spinning = Use the long edge of the template when you barrel roll.

Full Throttle = If you execute a 4- or 5- speed maneuver, assign an Evade token to your ship.

We’ll Take the Garbage = If one of your ships is destroyed, assign a Focus and Evade token to a friendly ship within Range 1 with a lower PS

You Do Have Your Moments = If you roll an Evade, you may change all other results in that roll to Evades.

Ultimately, I'll make these into standard sized cards. Let the Open Source commentary and critiques begin. . .

Ugh. The one thing I don't like about legion gracing our humble game. That being said... if theres only 3 decks (1 per faction let's say) or even just one general purpose deck, I'd be okay with it.

What I don't want to see is x wing morph into more of an lcg than it already borders on being.

I demand that all known Star Wars phrases be made: Fly Casual. Punch It. I'll Make Your Calculations For You. Passing Through the Magnetic Shield. The Shield's Still Up! IT'S A TRAP! INTENSIFY THE FORWARD FIREPOWER!!

3752873 to 1 -- Sunny Bounder ability?

I forgot to write in Fly Casual. Can't be a target but can't attack

I think I'll change the Raneg 4 shot to Intensify Forward Firepower!

Thanks!!

Oh, and the idea is 1 GP deck. Equal access, no balancing other than the power of the abilities/effects.

This has got me thinking about a prequels version with "this is where the fun begins" and "flying is for droids" among other things.

ugghh, now I feel dirty... :(

Cool I’d play with these. Some random thoughts:

Malfunction in Fire Control = Treat each primary weapon range as 1 lower.

I take it both of these (and the turret one) are assigned to the other player. Nasty

Take it after doubling the shield value we add the appropriate number of shield tokens e.g. shield value 3 would mean adding 3 tokens to whatever shields you have. After division round up or down? Quickdraw will love this :)

Mine! Mine!! Mine!!! = One ship may use cards and tokens for Minefield Mapper

Isn’t that how Minefield Mapper works anyway... that’s how our group interprets it although I understand others think differently. Don’t want to open a full rules debate here though!

Are these free actions? For a few maneuvres can I perform the same respositioning action twice?

These sound really funny. I like the negative ones. I'd play this with a random one drawn each round.

Adding to this concept you could also try adding in a fog of war aspect by simply making only your pilot cards known and total points at game start while all upgrade cards are facedown (except for dual cards but then you just sleeve them until reveal). You only reveal an upgrade card, by flipping it face up, when its effect applies. Have a mod and torpedo on your ship could be plasma and chips, or it could be seismic torpedo and countermeasures.

You would be surprised at how not knowing what a ship has while coming at you will affect your approach decisions.

I'd toyed with this idea before. I need to see if anyone can get roped in to playing it.

Before we do this, let's do X-Wing 2nd Edition that's all prequel ships!

1. Yep. So for Malfunction in Fire Control, R3 = no shot, R2 = +1 AgI, and R1 = no +1 attack.

2. For example. If you have 4 shields, you have 8 for the attack. You take 5 hits, all shields. You have 3 at the end of the attack. 3 div 2 = 1.5. Round down to 1 (good point, I'll add that). You have 1 shield at the end of the attack, and more impotatntly, did take hull hits.

3. We'll never know without a FAQ. We are like-minded in our interpretation, but I also can understand the logics of the counter argument. This would be a chance to have both!

4. Yep. A bit of the idea here is to allow some "illegal" stuff--once. Like, for example, Hit the Brakes could allow a ship to do a 0 maneuver.

Well, since I'm not in charge of 2.0, me doing this isn't slowing down the process.

And, actually:

I'll Try Spinning = use the long edge of the 1-maneuver to perform a barrel roll.

I like this, sounds fun. Here a couple of things that sprang to mind as I was reading.

Nice Shot! - How about add 1 hit result to your primary weapon attack.

See if you can't lock that down - maybe discard 1 damage card?

I'm coming around - is U-Turn = talon roll or U-wing pivot?

? - could be "I've still got a few tricks"

I like both ideas.

The U turn is from Star Trek. I do believe is could be mimicked with X Wing gear by using the 2 straight to do a non-displaced barrel roll; then reverse facing.

I love it!

Just an idea (would require rewording of some of the cards), what if each player brought a copy of the entire deck? Hand size is three. At the end of each round, you can choose to discard any cards you didn’t play, and then draw new cards.

Interesting idea. Each card could only be used once, that way. And, it would prevent the monotony of players only ever using a handful of the cards. If someone isn't using bombs, you could ditch that card. But if you really want a card, it better be one of the first 3. Set Up cards could be used, then play cards drawn. If a Set Up card comes up, you're stuck with it for one turn, then you can discard it. After choosing 3 cards, further draws in game are from the top of the deck and therefore random. I might limit it to only being able to play 1 card from you hand per turn, however, otherwise it would probably be too much hijinks per turn.

Hmm. . .I think I like this!!

You could also have it be like Destiny where you get to mulligan (shuffle any number of cards from your starting hand back and draw new ones). And yeah, one card per round is probably best unless you’re in complete casual mode! :)

Well, some cards need to be used immediately to affect board state (3,720 to 1, Never Tell Me the Odds, Mine! Mine!! Mine!!!) prior to the game commencing. You would need these in hand immediately. Thus, I would say you actually choose you starting hand. Then, it goes random.
