Epic Unfail

By Mpori, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi everybody!

Fisrt time posting, long time player (and forum lurker) looking for some advice...

I'm heading towards an epic touney in CDMX and, since I dont't own an epic ship yet, I'm building my half of the list around the following ships:

Epic Unfail (200/200)
====================
Jan Ors + Veteran Instincts + Blaster Turret + Recon Specialist + Moldy Crow + Stealth Device (39)
Corran Horn + Decoy + Fire-Control System + BB-8 + Engine Upgrade (45)
Biggs Darklighter + R2-D2 (29)
Captain Nym + Push the Limit + Cluster Mines + Conner Net + Havoc + Engine Upgrade + Advanced Sensors + R4-E1 (49)
Norra Wexley + Marksmanship + R5-K6 + Nien Nunb + Alliance Overhaul + Experimental Interface (38)

The basic idea is to use Jan as a support wingman for either Corran or Norra, while Bigg's soaks the attention and Nym wins time to bomb nicely.

Any suggestion appreciated, don't know what my partner will bring yet tho'...

1) Biggs isn’t as useful in Epic as in 100/6 due to massed firepower

2) A personal preference for e-wings in Epic is Ehtan Abaht, again due to massed firepower.

Its a good idea to plan along with your partner for complimentary lists, but I like that you’ve got plenty of ships on the table. If they’re all ones you like flying, do,it and enjoy!

Estarriol: Thanks for your time taking a look at my current list.

Do you suggest that it's a better idea to build half of the list at least with "en masse" firepower in mind? The only ships I do own more than one are: T-65(3), T-70(2) and ARC-170(2)... A, B, E, U-wing's, YT freighters of both classes, HWK-290, Scurrg and Z-95 just one of each... For the sake of fun what you have tried in current Epic games?

Epic is a comletely different kind of play style from the standard 100 pt game. With so many firing arcs on the table, the traditional big name aces tend to take fire from half a dozen ships in the first round. Regen ships suffer the same fate. Cheaper generics rule the day, especially ones at PS 4. Since huge ships fire at PS 4 any of yours that are destroyed stay on the board for the simultaneous attack rule until they get their chance to shoot back Also, jack of all trade ships like the X-Wing do very well in epic. Area of effect weapons like assault missiles and Ion torpedoes usually hit several targets. Huge ships hate Ions. Ioning big ships strips them of their energy so they cannot shoot or do special actions.

A favorite mini squad for me is Dutch Vander and some wing mates all with Ion Torps. (2 of your Red squadron X's would do nicely.) His ability can help the others to get target locks and then you blast away at an enemy huge ship doing lots of damage and stripping its energy. Any ships in range 1 also get an Ion and risk being run over next turn.

Also, a sneaky little Green Squadron A-Wing can sometimes blow right through the whole engagement zone and get on the tail of a huge ship where it can just plink away at the vulnerable tail section.

Finally, if your partner has a Corvett, you can use Roark Garnet in your HWK to boost it up to PS 12. This gives it a chance to take out some enemy ships without them ever shooting back. Just give him a turret, (Ion would be nice) and maybe a cheap crew and fly him near the Corvette but away from the main battle.

If you want a 'massed fighters' mob, I'd recommend as a starting point:

  • Jess Pava
  • Thane Kyrell
  • Etahn A'Baht
  • Bohdi Rook

All of whom really, really like a large force of escorting heavy fighters flying wing.

Then fill out with as many generic warm bodies as possible (start with the T-65s and T-70s) - possibly the mid-tier generics to get the PS advantage.

If you have access to Operations Specialists, those crew are worth their weight in gold and definitely worth fielding a crew-based ship to put them on.

Lando and Airen Cracken (especially with Guidance Chips and Thread Tracers) aren't bad buys for the same reason; cheap extra actions that don't require you to do anything in particular.

Thanks, Magnus & Pickrick, guys, already re-working my list because of your keen advice.

I'm quite limited of upgrades since I'd been just collecting rebels but I'm starting to build something around Thane & Ethan. I'd Would also consider to get Roark on to the squad if my partner brings big ships, that boost sounds awesome... Regards.

What Epic ship are you looking at getting? I think its important to design your squad around your epic ship to get maximum effectiveness.
Do you have to have an epic ship for the tourney? Because they are not as efficient as just spamming smaller ships.

Etahn is definitely a great pick for epic. Especially if you use sensor jammer on him, it will up his survival or force your opponent to blow tokens on him.

As others have said, cut down some of those named pilots for generics. Also, abilities than function more than once per turn or of they do give a significant boost are very useful. To that end, I would cut Jan Ors. one extra attack for on one attack is not great in epic, and those upgrades are eating a ton of points on a ship that will die very quickly when guns get pointed its way. if you want a support ship, Cracken is probably more useful. Yeah, got to fly closer together, but the actions help. Especially if you take the earlier suggestion to run Dutch with a couple xwings with torps.

Thank's guys, I've taken notes on your suggestion and this came out:

Rogue Squadron MX (198/200)
==========================
X-wing: Red Squadron Pilot (23)

X-wing: Red Squadron Pilot (23)

X-wing: Red Squadron Pilot (23)

T/70 X-wing: Red Squadron Veteran (26)

T/70 X-wing: Red Squadron Veteran (26)

HWK-290: Roark Garnet (19 + 10)
+ Ion Cannon Turret (5)
+ Hera Syndulla (1)
+ Engine Upgrade (4)
YT-2400: Wild Space Fringer (30 + 18)
+ Ion Cannon (3)
+ Assault Missiles (5)
+ Bodhi Rook (1)
+ Outrider (5)
+ Engine Upgrade (4)

I don't own any Y-Wing but perhaps I can borrow one from my partner, alas I'd tried to make Roark fill Dutch's role somehow.

Pretty straight: HWK and freighter stand around the main squad perimeter for support, any of 2 groups of X's; T-70 may go front while T-65 try to outflank.

Angry... Don't know yet what my partner would bring. Drako: Perhaps I'd swap either the HWK or the YT to include Ethan, but not so sure yet... Also I consider to upgrade the T-65 with the EU mod by getting it away from the YT and HWK but that lefts 2 T-65 AG4 with boost at 27, so I'm considerind asking my partner that allow me to use their T-70's and hope to still retain the initiative.

Any swaps or drops are welcome. Thanks again guys.

rules clarification

I do not have a lot of exp with epic, but have played a great number of 2v2 200 pt games, so feel free to take my advice with a grain of salt. I would absolutely Try and find upgrade cards you want. For example, I would add R2 astro and IA to all the x-wings, to get the points, I would drop one of the engine upgrades. Secondly, I would use either the outrider or the missile on YT, not both. 48 points on one ship is just begging for it to be the first target, so I would upgrade with countermeasures and maybe glitterstim (w/smuggling compartments) to help keep it alive.

jswindy: It's no lie that my first choice to upgrade the T-65s was R2 astro... but don't own any, but IA I do indeed, gonna ask my partner what ships he does have and see what I can do to boost those generics. Regarding the YT , I'm not sure where to take it, I see your point but just unsure whats better for the rest of the list. I want to splash damage or ralentize deadly foes... I'm gonna try both aproaches tomorrow and figureit out if Roark can be swaped for something better. Any way thanks for sharing your thougths mate.

grammar correction

Hi there!

My partner finally told me he wants to bring his CR-90, Fat Rey, an escort of 2 B-Wings and a front line of 3 Z-95. SInce there are two big ships prone to massive firepower I'd rebuilt my list, so we are able to get at our oponent and return fire. So here it is:

Marea Roja MX (200/200)
======================
X-wing: Red Squadron Pilot (23)

X-wing: Red Squadron Pilot (23)

X-wing: Red Squadron Pilot (23)

T/70 X-wing: Red Squadron Veteran (26)

T/70 X-wing: Red Squadron Veteran (26)

T/70 X-wing: Red Squadron Veteran (26)

ARC-170: Braylen Stramm (25)
+ Alliance Overhaul (0)
ARC-170: Thane Kyrell (26 + 2)
+ Targeting Astromech (2)
+ Alliance Overhaul (0)

I'd ask him to bring Leia, so we could accelerate and jump over earlier in the game and stay calm with most of our ships once our opponents have defined their route.

Thoughts appreciated. Regards to everyone.
