The return of the Whisper(Ps 12)

By JcDemented, in X-Wing Squad Lists

After seeing Nym being Ps 10 and whisper having a difficult time with his ps 9 i try to make a build with a ps higher ps whisper , and taking advantage that i get a rebel z95 (and

and finding out about the existence of the decoy) I make this build focus on whisper, yesterday I fly against Nymranda and this build give me good results, i lost, because of the dice, all blanks, even whit TL and Focus...(really really bad luck) but my oponent have a realle dificult time against this build.

-Im not sure about the whisper crew, do you have a better one?, maybe another upgrade in the build??

I’ve tried Decoy on Whisper and Echo. Keeping a Phantom at Range 1-2 of Epsilon Ace makes the Phanom predictable. A predictable Phantom is a dead Phantom, regardless of Pilot Skill during the combat Phase.

not so predictable, the range of decoy is 1-2 the phantom can fly with the Epsilon ace Ps12 or with Quickdraw Ps11 and have a lot of space to be a phantom

Fun to experiment with but ultimately super inconsistent.

Just use Kylo Crew and ISTDs.

Its there for a reason. Its our version of Biggs.

Stay cloaked with Whisper until you can shoot first and then fly perfectly and solo their list.

Just pray you dont run into stress or multiple PS11/10 ships.

More predictable than a standard build for a Phantom. Put it on the table. See how you do against bombs when your opponent knows you’re trying to maintain a bubble of friendship between two ships.

I'd probably drop Pattern Analyzer for a (Cruise or Harpoon) Missile on Quickdraw. You'd probably need a cheaper crew than Hotshot Copilot, though. They seem really cool, however. Kylo would work, or maybe Kallus, Operation Specialist, or Rebel Captive. Alternately, it might be interesting to consider Echo in the above list. You're relying on Decoy anyhow, so being 6 instead of 7 won't matter. You'd get those really nifty 2-bank decloaks, and save 2 points for other upgrades. Echo likely needs Kallus or Recon Specialist, though. Whisper/Echo is a trade-off between better positioning and better defensive dice mods, so Echo would likely need to supplement that, while Whisper doesn't necessarily have to.

The one time I flew bombers against a Phantom I got absolutely destroyed, but those were PS2 K-Wings without TLTs. My opponent was running a PS10 RAC with Gunner/Vader and a Decoy/Recon Spec Echo. He just decloaked and flew away, switching targets just being sure to never get close. Against 1 agility, a 4-dice primary is pretty solid, even from range 3. That might have worked fine against Miranda/Nym, except for TLT. You'll get eaten alive by TLT shots if you aren't cloaked. If you won't be in range to Decoy, it'd probably be best to not decloak. It might be possible with a patient game-plan.

The problem is your still moving at PS7. Nym just adv sensors, does Nym things, drops bombs on Whisper, whisper gets no shots on Nym.

I agree with the general sentiment that Decoy is just not worth it for Whisper. The other problem is the fact that Epsilon Ace has a measly 2 attack dice and so doesn't really help kill stuff.

Whisper is actually pretty good at avoiding Nym's bombs, even with a lower PS (thanks to the decloak move to get away) but she is not good at attacking Nym. She really needs to be able to shoot in order to cloak, so Nym still remains a bad matchup. You can help her out though by building the rest of your squad to murderize Nym in short order. Quickdraw is a good start:

Quickdraw w/ VI, FCS & title = 32

Duchess w/ VI & AA = 24

Whisper w/ VI, FCS, ACD & rebel captive = 42

98

You have the initiative bid so that Whisper doesn't lose to Dengar or Fenn or even PS 9 Poe. Also, the bid lets you hand off initiative against Nym so that Duchess can easily hunt down and help Quickdraw destroy Nym fast. Rebel Captive is the crew of choice because if Nym shoots at her, he's stressed (therefore no advanced sensors) and also it protects Whisper from Expertise.

And while Duchess & Quickdraw are making Nym miserable, Whisper can be off killing whatever else the opponent has in their list.
