Crab: When do you sacrifice?

By Tabris2k, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Hi. Just started playing with Crab for a change of pace, but I have a doubt:

When do you sacrifice your characters for the out-of-conflict cards, like Funeral Pyre or Vanguard Warrior? I thought the best time was after all conflicts were done, but my rival pointed out to me that, after that, there was no Action Window till after all characters get discarded by the Fate Phase effects. I checked in the RRG and it seems he's right, so I'll have to sacrifice them during conflicts, and I'm not too fond of that.

Am I missing something?

Your rival is wrong. There is a window between the last conflict before the fate phase begins. There is a window after the fate stuff gets resolved before the Regroup phase, and then one in the regropu phase. Best time is to sac bowed guys with 0 fate before fate begins, or after they get used in a conflict and won't get straightened (For something like Steadfast Witch Hunter).

To note, you don't hit the "Finish up Conflict and move to fate phase" until after the action phase where there are no more conflicts to declare. It is weirdly worded for human understanding (Makes sense for a computer!).

When a conflict ends, or is passed you always return to an action window. This means after the last possible conflict (2nd player 2nd conflict) is completed or passed there is still an action window, during this time you can freely use any actions like Funeral Pyre.

After this action window the game will then resolve Imperial Favor and go to the Fate Phase. There are no action windows here until after Fate Phase has discarded characters without fate, and removed fate from characters in play. There is a window in the Fate phase after characters have been discarded (this is sometimes a key opportunity to play Way of the Crab) and another in the Regroup phase before cards are readied.

Ooops, where I said "Regroup Phase", I meant "Fate Phase". Edited the first post, now is correct.

Ok, so the action window from conflict phase always starts even if there are no more conflicts to be declared. Good to know. Thank you.

In case you need to give reference or "prove" this. Page 19 of the RR, III Conflict Phase - step 3.3 Conflict Ends / Is Passed - states return to the Action Window following 3.1 - thus you always have a conflict window after every conflict, even the last one.

Sacrifice mid conflict to power up Vengeful Berzerker. I am amazed at just how flammable a Kaiu Envoy is, their kimonos are like flash paper.
