The stagnation is totally killing my motivation to play this game

I wonder how we ever played games for years without even thinking of an expansion?

Even Hero Quest had expansions. Its not a new thing.

If you speak of games like Monopoly or Risk.... there is a reason they get mostly only played once a year. Mostly by casuals.

I got Hero Quest when it first came out. So much fun!!! Then Metroid for Super NES came out and I never touched it again.

I would love the chance to play in an actual tournament, but maybe it's better that the option isn't available to me where I live. It does free up the small group I play with to just do our own thing without having to worry about... THE META!

Personally, I like seeing different builds on the table every week. Trying out different strategies makes you a better player. So, in the spirit of taking responsibility for my own good time, I came up with an idea that I thought might keep things fresh for the people I play with. It's done right by us so far. Winner rolls a D20 and puts some type of restriction on the next week's build. One mulligan roll is allowed.

01: Squad Points -20
02: Squad Points -10
03: 3 Ships or Less
04: 4 Ships or More
05: No Pilot Skill Higher than 5
06: No Pilot Skill Higher than 6
07: No Pilot Skill Higher than 7
08: Generic Pilots Only
09: No Restrictions
10: No Restrictions
11: No Restrictions
12: No Restrictions
13: No Modifications
14: No Elite Upgrades
15: No Elite Upgrades
16: No Secondary Weapons
17: No Secondary Weapons
18: No Titles
19: Squad Points +10
20: Squad Points +20

So I guess I'm saying that sometimes you just need to get creative. This setup has worked for me, but something completely different might work for you. Don't let someone else dictate your level of enjoyment. Even if it's the game's designers.

I like this idea! Is it one roll for each game? So if I play and win three games this week, I'd have three restrictions for next week? Would you re-roll if you got the same number twice?

We get together to play on Saturdays. At the end of the night, whichever player has the most wins rolls a single 20 sided dice and we see what comes up. If the winner doesn't like the first result, you roll a second time. Whatever comes up the second time though we stick with.

We've even rolled twice on some nights just to see what would come up. It makes the builds different every week and we pretty much spend the entire week thinking about it. Its like Fight Club.

Edit: After re-reading your post I wanted to make sure something was clear. Whatever restrictions we use effect everyone. It keeps things fair, and keeps things fresh. The winner for the evening just has the benefit of vetoing a roll he or she doesn't like, or even adding a second roll if he or she is feeling lucky.

XWing has this awesome problem where a majority of the players don't want to stop playing it, and have kept playing it since the early waves. So we end up with tons of veteran players.

All these players have played hundreds (if not more than a thousands games), so of course there is stagnation and boredom.

The core of the game is still basically the same. Set dials, move ships, roll dice. (Heck, increased prevalence of bomb and alpha strike lists have actually been the biggest changes to core game concepts).

Regardless of which meta is present, this will be the case (especially as time goes on). I know I was especially bored during Wave 3 when it was 4 Ship Rebel vs 7 TIE Swarms for like 9 months. And I even started loathing tourney prep after 1.5 years of having to beat 3 JM5K lists lol.

Yes.
And when can we see you on stream next?

How does No Restrictions work?

Also, I would add in No Unique Pilots just for some more spice.

Then you - like he - should either crap or get off the pot, just stop trying to drag the rest of the forum down the u-bend with you.

You see from my pov its uncivilized people who should "get off". You can disagree but can you please be respectful while doing so?

Just look at how many players share the OP point of view. It's gotten even worst with the last podcast. We kinda learned they dont know much about their own game and they design only based on personnal "feelings" instead of data, math and playtesting.

That explains all the "crap" weve been getting recently ;-)

You are always going to have a few players that prefer to play the game straight up. 100 points, and no special rules. That middle area that says no restrictions is for those players. That way there's always a chance people can just play what they want.

I did do generic pilots only. I'm still new, but I'm pretty sure that means no unique pilots. That's actually the one selfish thing I put on the list. I like generics. That makes sure I get a chance to play what I like. Which basically consists of putting as many ships on the table as humanly possible.

I thought it meant stuff like: No Imperial Only or Unique or stuff like that.

@Blail Blerg I'd recommend trying one of the campaigns in the epic ship. Either that or HotAC. Even if you have done HotAC before, you can go with a different type of ship/pilot and it's a different experience.

For the others, I'm surprised at the negative reactions to his post. I see he's edited it, but I don't see anything where he's really putting the game down too much. He's saying he's not interested in the game. I see it as him wanting suggestions to have fun with the game. Those that are just bashing him are part of the toxic parts of this forum that makes it a terrible place.

You are sure you are not confusing @stegocent and @Blail Blerg ;) In earnest though both have the same avatar (and Blail actually joked about it). Many good posts from both. However, recently it is from Blail not just the already mentioned threads, but also a LOT of negative, partly even caustic negative, in other threads. So the negative reaction here is understandable. Even I have reluctantly set Blail to ignore some weeks ago. Still click time to time on his posts, though, but mostly just disappointed again. And as other have said, constant negativity draws others down as well.

Destiny can be expensive, but with a little planning, $30-$40 can get you a solid deck that can run at the store level

Very true. Get 2 of the 2 player boxed sets and you can make a decent hero and villain deck with what you get.

Man, I sure got a lot of hate for this.

Which ones do you think are reportable? Any? I'm a bit lacking motivation right now lol

I never said it was a new thing; or didn't mean to. I simply said there are plenty of great game without expansions; and I'll add that some of these games get played often. But in our never ending short attention spare search for the next shiney I understand why it seems we and game companies can't survive without new expansions regularly released. But some of those expansions, help ruin a perfectly good game.

We did this last night. Next time we play we aren’t allowed to use secondary weapons.

I love when that one comes up. Not that I have any real hate for secondary weapons, but it does make you look at certain ships differently. It also makes certain ships viable that you might not normally play in an ordinance laden setting. If you come up with any interesting tweaks for that list of 20 restrictions, please let me know.

Ah, ok. I had thought the idea was that anyone who won would roll for each win, as a sort of handicap for the next week. Though, I think either way would be interesting to play, personally.

GW games are pretty atractive right now, Shadespire and Blood Bowl both offer a hobby component (which you may not want, but to me is great as it is something I can do independently of other people - no need to schedule my 20min paint session at the end of the day with somebody else) and at least the latter well balanced gameplay.

Oh and competetive X-Wing is still a blast if you don't have a stake in what you fly. The VASSAL league is amazing as always and really demonstrates just how much fun pushing your level in X-Wing is.

GW and WizKids just partnered up.. Guess GW's other half of the bed got cold.
Get ready for some 40-klix (if that name gets used I said it first)
