Rivals draft cost

I actually agree the buy-in seems high. Heroclix sealeds are $30. Magic sealeds/drafts are usually $30 unless THG or pre-release.

Plus there's the issue of having the right expansion on hand at a store level. Let's say there's not an equal number of boosters for the expansion that some people want - how do you divide those up?

I also wouldn't be surprised if the store made you buy the draft pick more than once. Otherwise you would need some tracking/checking system in place that the draft pack someone brings in with them is legit and has all the appropriate cards. I could see people slipping in a card from the expansion into their "draft pack" and hoping no one notices.

A store would not need to make sure things are legit. That is up to the TO to make sure that nothing shady is going on.

You buy it twice if you want 2 of everything for constructed.

and perhaps they will loan the second to new players?

I'm probably going to forego buying any boxes of Legacies. Instead I'll buy the starters, then try to play in a few drafts or sealed tournaments. Our local store uses packs as prize support, so I should be able to pick up a decent amount between tournaments and prizes.

exactly! if people were going to buy the packs anyway drafting is actually "free"

I personally bought no packs of the third expansion because while I like constructed play and collecting the game, I did not like playing constructed against people with full card sets. I feel like the game functions better with limited formats.

Yes there is a demand, but what is this Rivals set bringing that could not have been done with the Starter sets? If FFG's draft answer was going to be this simple, then why not give the yearly Core starter sets a further purpose?

Ok Starter Sets are now Draft Packs.

So you need to bring both. That's not a concern since players will buy both. Except that's not true. There no reason you need all or most card even to play this game competitively, so you'll find many with no need to buy either starter let alone both. The group of players that have to buy everything will have one less $15 purchase to make, but if you have to buy everything you'll care much less about another product with stuff you want then the more price wary person that doesn't plan to buy both or any starters.

So you've bought both starters. You open your packs and pull a bunch of Villian Blue cards and Hero Red cards, but no characters for those groups. Now you can't use the cards you just opened. If that is a possibility in your draft format your draft format is unworkable.

So the solution is to change the starter sets to have a character for each color to satisfy your draft needs, except now your starter sets don't serve their purpose. There isn't enough overlap in what you want the two products to do.

I see a potential problem where within the first three packs opened there are two legendaries. If it were me Id be upset because I'm basically giving the player on my left a legendary. Additionally, unless I draw a good character right off the bat, I would have no idea what to draft for other than the Rivals characters. I could be choosing weapons of one color/faction then draw an awesome character later on I would want to use but wouldn't fit my previous drafting. I personally would have more fun just buying the 6-8 packs and opening them myself, that way there is no chance of me giving away a legendary. Everybody agrees that the first cards taken will all be rares/ legendaries and then 90% of the time the uncommons. It would still be random enough for me to have fun challenging myself to build a deck with what I got.

I agree! Honestly, I think the cards with dice should be kept by the person opening the packs (if the players are going to open 3 at a time) and then place all the commons and uncommons in a stack to be passed and drafted. Finally, I'd add a "trading period" were players may trade rares opened among each other. This would be a very different style of draft and help Destiny to stand out among the many games that draft far better in the traditional since.

When we made our draft tournament, all cards were put in a pool at the end of the tournament and drafted by players according to their final standing in the tournament, going first to last then last to first, etc. It's a good way to fill up your collection and everybody agreed to do it again when the next set will come out.

Actually you open 6 at a time. 2 players each putting 3 packs in together is 6 packs. Then done a second time inverse order another 6 packs. So the two players have drafted from a pool of 12 packs.

if you have more then 2 players you would do the sealed were you open 8 packs and make a deck from your own packs opened.

I could be mistaken, but this is my understanding

Draft and Constructed is just simply the names of the Formats. Drafting with just 2 people is really not that fun. Also its 6 packs PER PLAYER in Draft, not 6 packs total.

Yup I said 6 per player. They broke it into 2 rounds. Each player puts in 3 packs. Then you do it again. In reverse order.

they mention draft, and sealed. And constructed. There's 3 methods.

Sealed you get 8 packs all to yourself and make a deck from what you pull.

There are two ways to look at a draft.

One you buy 6 packs and those are your cards ... until you have to pass them. So yeah, if you were forced to pass a really good card, while taking a really good card, one probably won't be too happy.

The other is everyone bought into the draft and all the open packs are owned by the group until distributed. Sorting cards at the end is an alternative to passing them around, though the single card prices on some cards for Destiny is stupid high. If everyone knows they are playing for an ancient, specially the guy who currently is in control of it, they will be very not happy about losing.

Either solution presents problems and really the only "fair and civilized" way to do this is just do sealed and people get the lottery up front when they are handed their packs. I think if single prices maxed out at $10-15 and there were several of them, people would be far more civil about this. Of course everyone could pull trash cards and it won't matter.

Yeah, the down side to sealed is you do need to buy more packs to really have a chance at putting together something that looks like a deck.

What's that? My Mum's calling me, gotta go!! :D

No, seriously you aren't giving away the Legendary, you are following the rules you agreed to play by when you entered the tournament.

No again... it's a DRAFT and you want to win, don't go to a draft tournament if you want to keep cards you open, BUY BOOSTERS instead.

Exactly, that way, people don't end up with all legendary and 0 wins...

Lets face it. Destiny was not designed with any kind of limited format in mind. The Rivals box is a bandaid that won't fix the inherant problem of the distribution model.

If i had to choose between between sealed and draft in destiny i would pick sealed. It appears to be a better fit than draft.

On the other hand, If you're the kind of guy/girl that gets no card of value in your packs while the person sitting next to you opens 2 legendary, you'll be glad that you will still come out with something of value at the end of the day.

Our group was aware of the price distribution and just opening the packs were fun since it was kinda like opening a box all together, everyone was happy when a player opened a Mace Windu or Sabine. In the end, everyone was happy, came out with something of value or cards that they wanted and we all had a blast.

From all the playing I have done, I’d probably go sealed myself. Draft has enough that you should be able to make a fun deck, especially with the suspension of alignment rules

Sealed seems to be the way to go. No one wants to give up good cards that they need. Kids will barely be able to afford it and collectors will have about 85% of the set after buying 2 or 3 boxes. Stop complaining about the cost because bottom line is it's what people asked for. It adds a lot to the game. People who can't afford it will get more cards in trade from those who can and already have most of the sets. It shows FFG is serious about the game. This is a win!

Actually, that's a great point. When I first started I was buying a box a set, but I couldn't really afford to do more. Now I'm at the point where blind fatigue has set in, and I have no interest in buying the packs to be competitive, especially with the sunk cost. However Sealed allows me a way to pop back in at a decent price range(I can afford to do $35 every month or so), have a level playing field, give me a chance to get a few new characters and items for my for fun collection without being forced into the meta.

I think sitting at home with a friend draft will be fantastic! But at the store for a tourny, sealed sounds perfect for levelling the playing field and a nice change from constructed.

It is great everyone in your play group is mature enough to see things that way. In truth, this is probably the best way to do things, if everyone is mature enough to understand that. Otherwise, sealed solves all the drama problems that can come up.

If you go into it thinking “these six packs are mine and I don’t want to share any of it”, draft is not for you.

Be aware though that in sealed your neighbour could end up with 4 Legendaries where you have none, that’s not likely to happen in Draft. Of course, it could also be the other way around.

If you want to be sure of what you get, just skip draft and sealed altogether and buy a box, 6 Legendaries guaranteed (apart from any very rare distribution anomalies).

But if the person to the right of you gets two legendaries, they give you one.

This doesn't hurt your chances of getting a legendary.

So, I don’t play Destiny, but I’m a bit confused by the griping on this thread.

- The Starter has a bunch of new, exclusive cards you can use in constructed.

- If you buy packs, this is fun and interactive way to do what you do anyway. Just buy less packs outside of this mode and you’ll be spending the same amount of money.

- The drafting element adds some “insta-trading” - choice as to what you get in your packs. (Though I kinda wish they’d have players return all cards at the end and then do an additional draft for your collection - as what’s good for your deck and collection may differ.)

- The addition of drafting rules lets you create your own “packs” in baggies and run your own drafts with just your collection. (If you don’t want to buy a bunch of draft starters, you can find another way to supplement.) If you ever buy packs, you can roll them in to the experience.

- The meta of this game doesn’t sound great. I don’t like collectible games. I wouldn’t ever play this game, until now. I love draft in games. I like that all I need to do is buy a starter for bits and a draft pack and I’m good to go. If I went in, I would rarely buy packs outside of draft and use my collection, eventually, to run my own “drafts.”

What drama? It sounds like some folks here have never drafted before. You don’t get attached to the cards you happen to open. If you open two legends in your first three packs congrats you get to pick the better one.

This is my main issue with the proposed draft rules. It just feels like a band-aid. This game was not designed from the ground up to play well in a traditional drafting environment. I think FFG had a chance to do something new here and instead.... this. I'm going to try it, but feel the Sealed is the better of the two proposed new play types.
