0 skill vs no presence in a conflict

By pvanoverwalle2, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Hi All,

I apologise if the answer to this question has already been provided somewhere, but I was unable to find it if it was ;-)

During a conflict, if the defender somehow ends up with no presence whatsoever (either on account of not assigning any defenders or by defenders being moved home) while the attacker still has presence, but his skill count is 0 (ie. his characters are all bowed), does the attacker still win the conflict ? The rules state that if both player's skill counts are 0, there is no winner. So, the discussion actually becomes whether a player with no presence in a conflict still has 0 skill count in that conflict ...

Thanks for any feedback you can provide.

If both sides count zero skill there is no winner. You only count the skill that is contributed to the conflict, so if both sides only have bowed characters that aren't contributing any skill, it would result in zero/zero no winner.

Presence doesn't matter for this calculation.

Even if the defender has no presence, if the attacker has zero, they don't win.

Like the others have said, a 0-0 tie is always a draw with no winners. However, one additional thing to keep in mind in this situation is the defender still loses 1 honor at the end of the conflict for not having a character in the conflict.

Incorrect representation of the rules.

That is incorrect. Honor is only lost if the Attacker won.

3.2.4. Apply unopposed

If the attacking player won the conflict and the defending player controls no participating characters (in step 3.2.3), the conflict is considered “unopposed.” The defending player loses 1 honor and returns it to the general token pool. If the defending player or no player won the conflict, nothing happens during this step
