2018 World Cup Qualifier Event

By BiggsIRL, in Star Wars: Armada

Hello and welcome to the qualifier event for the 2018 World Cup! Now, quite a few of you have already qualified thanks to winning a major vassal tournament over the last year (or the 2017 World Championship). In addition, all the previous winners of the World Cup get automatic entry (though I doubt @clontroper5 will be showing up this year) and the top 4 from the previous year's World Cup get automatic entry.

But a lot of you don't have your ticket punched already to this prestigious online event with literally no prize support other than glory and possibly a new archetype of list named in your honor. That is where the World Cup Qualifier Event comes into play!

How Do I Sign Up?

Easy, post below that you are signing up. Now wasn't that easy?

Where Do I Send My List?

You don't! You can change up your list all you want, and play whoever you want. Everything is very open ended. If you play someone in Vassal who is also signed up for the event, or already qualified, it counts as a qualifier game! You don't even have to schedule it in advance, though I'd suggest doing so anyway.

How Do I Qualify?

Well, the basic way to qualify is to earn an average of 7 points per game over at least 3 games. We're calling this method of qualification Fly Fast - Win Big. Simply put, play 3 games, earn 21 points, and you earn a Blackjack Award and the qualification slot. Well, I know you're wondering what if you get blown out your first game, should you even bother? Well, if you play 4 games, you earn a Mulligan to spend on one of your games, so you only count your best 3! If you play 5 games, you only need to score 28 points over your 4 best games. That was my score at US Nationals over 5 rounds, so you should be able to manage that. If you have to mulligan, you get the Mulligan's Island Award and the same qualification slot the Blackjackers get. Neither one is a physical award.

Slots will be awarded until we have 32 qualified players, or until December 18th, whichever comes first. Prior to starting, we have 14 qualified players (well, 13 and whoever wins the Autumn Vassal Tournament), so that leaves 18 slots open first come, first serve. There are other ways to earn your slot as well...

What Other Ways Can I Qualify?

Well, you could also play 6 games over 6 weeks. I mean, I'm not going to be super strict about 1 game per week, but don't like play a game a day or something. No matter what your score, that amount of dedication proves you got what it takes to be a warm body Just Have Fun in one of the PODs, and play all 3 of your games, and earns you a Spirit of Competition Award . It's like a trophy, but not a physical one. More like a Playstation trophy. You've got until December 18th to get 6 games in, that seems reasonable.

The other way you can qualify is not for the faint of heart. During the event, Bounties will be posted. The first participant to claim a bounty gets a Bounty Hunter's Award and qualifies. Again, not a physical award. Be warned! Bounties are dangerous to collect at the best of times, and your skills will definitely be put to the test if you try to claim one. Bounty games count as qualifier games, and losing one can tank your qualifier score! But imagine the glory of collecting one.

Are Spoiled Cards Legal?

Is it in Vassal? It's legal. If your opponent doesn't want you playing with Thrawn yet, find a different opponent. Hopefully they spoil more MC-75 soon.

When Does This Event Start?

Now. Sign up, start playing.

I Still Have Questions?

Ask below, I'll add answered questions to the OP.

Slots are filling up fast!?

If these get filled that doesn't mean the fun has to end.

After those slots are filled, AT LARGE RESERVED slots open up for you to win, in much the same way! Each player that wins an AT LARGE RESERVED slot will get a number, based on the order in which they qualify for the slot. When the World Cup begins, any of the 32 slots that aren't filled by a Qualified player for any reason will be filled instead by the lowest number AT LARGE RESERVED slot.

For Example:

Admiral Tidus is the first player to qualify after all 32 qualification slots are closed. He is given AT LARGE RESERVED (1).
General Sindula is the second player to qualify after the slots are closed. She is given AT LARGE RESERVED (2).
General Grievous isn't available to play in the World Cup this year. His slot is given to Admiral Tidus, because he has the lowest number AT LARGE RESERVED slot.

Wait, it's play 3 games and get 21 points, 6 games in 6 weeks regardless of points, or win a bounty and we qualify, then we play 3 games in the actual Tourney? From January to whenever-it-ends (how many months does it run - 3 or 5?)?

Do the games in the Perdant Tourney currently being run count? What about the games to be played in the Autumn one?

@GhostofNobodyInParticular - " Wait, it's play 3 games and get 21 points, 6 games in 6 weeks regardless of points, or win a bounty and we qualify, then we play 3 games in the actual Tourney?"

Correct. The actual tournament is in January and the POD rounds last basically the month of January, with elimination rounds after. Should wrap up in late February / Early March.

"Do the games in the Perdant Tourney currently being run count? What about the games to be played in the Autumn one?"

If you want to double dip, who am I to stop you? This is an excuse to get people playing Armada.

I sign up! And whoever really wants to fly fast , should meet me on Vassal. Now! But, oh boy, it won't be easy to win big ! ;)

Then the two games I have left to play in the Perdant tourney would count. . . I don't expect to win big, but maybe I can find 4 other games before December 18th. It's 2 months. . .

I am just concerned about signing up then not being able to play later in the year.

Just make sure your opponents sign up (or are already qualified).

Also, if you do qualify but can't play in the actual World Cup tournament, do not fret. We will be adding standby seats as well, for any seat not qualified for, or qualified and not claimed.

In that case I shall tentatively sign up, hoping that I shall have the time, so that on the chance that I do, the opportunity is not wasted.

I'm in. PM if you want to beat up an Irishman for points.

I also wish to participate.

Australian Eastern time zone.

Well, storm permitting, @Irishmadcat and I ought to have our first game today at 7 PM BST.

Edit: Is this where we report them, or should we do so somewhere else?

I'm in and have very little doubt that I will qualify from six games, rather than any particular MoV or ... "winning record".... I believe is what it's called?

Good enough for now I guess. I will post a reporting thread when I get off work.

I am in. European evening matches.

All welcome, except GKs Sloane and Aresius' liberty. :)

I'll use a new list unless someone specifically wants to get Sato battered.

So @Tokra 's Sloane is OK, but not mine?

How rude! :D

Anyway, it's time to play something new for me.

I'm in. Now, what to play....

I'll play. Anyone want to play this weekend? Time zone shouldn't matter since I'll be home alone.

I am signing up. Bring it on. :)

I'm up for it. I know I shan't reach 21 points in 3 games, so I'm going for 6 before December. I can play you Saturday, before 10 PM BST.

Signing up as well! Pacific time, evenings...and perhaps weekend early mornings. @Undeadguy I'm game if you are. Perhaps @LTD our time zones can match up as well?

Sure, I'll take the plunge. US Eastern time.

You never know, you might get lucky and roll max damage while I roll minimum :P If google converted it correctly, that is 5PM EST for me on Saturday which I am 99% sure I can do.

It ought to be 5 hours ahead of Boston, for reference. Are you free before then? I am free till then, and if I'm lucky I can stretch it till 11:30.

Oh yea I have no plans this weekend. So we can play whenever.
