Genesys and Star Wars Dice

By fjw70, in Genesys

Endersai has my situation. Never played Star Wars (never felt the need, I've actually never played in a licensed setting that was based on another media form (not saying that this is a bad thing specifically, but I come up with so many world ideas (as does my wife), the need for a licensed setting was unneeded.). But Genesys looks cool, and so I will get me some dice. I picked up some Fugde Dice when I tried Fate. If I played DCC I'd get all weird odd numbered dice. To me, physically rolling the physical dice is part and parcel of the game. If I had played star wars and already had dice I'd just use those. My wife is going to use digital tools.

Lots of options is good.

But like people already said in the L5R... we don't need, we don't deserve and FFG don't need a new set of dices for every new RPG to keep them alive. Star Wars has enought good books to keep SW live. Idk how much the dices impact the FFG SW income, but it's insane to create a new dice set per RPG. I know that could make sense to create new set dices everytime, but... it's not that important at all.

We don’t need any of these things, we deserve nothing other than what we feel our money is worth and FFG needs whatever the market will handle.

I suspect my group will start off with just the SW dice, but if it looks like we are going to stick with genesys I suspect most of us will end up with a set or two of the genesys dice as well. The symbols just seem so much more intuitive, for a start.

I should hope so; it was your thoughts I was reading through the darkest of rituals.

Also, play Star Wars.

Lol.

I'm playing gestalt Psion/Gifted Blade in Pathfinder who's whole approach is Jedi (she is a Padawan in the Order of Dathomir). :)

Here is a lazy re-skin I threw together of Game2's Star Wars EotE dice roller app in support of Genesys and the Genesys dice. Its actually just a HTML page with base64 embedded graphics. It's completely self contained and requires nothing beyond the HTML page to work. I replaced the embedded SW result graphics (success, failure, etc) with Genesys symbols. The dice menu that you select the dice to roll from still shows the dice with SW EotE symbols but the shapes and colors of dice should make the selection of dice obvious (d12 yellow, d8 green, etc. )

If the laziness fades, I may replace the SW menu dice with Genesys dice.

I left the force die untouched for that that may wish to use it (and I was too lazy to mess with the javascript)

You can find the original by googling "game2 eote"

Edit: Overcame the laziness :)

See later in the thread for the corrected file.

It' great, thanks!

A few bugs to report...

1. Despair does not appear on the Dice

2. There is an odd non-repeating math error with the successes and failures. Sometimes the output is correct, sometimes not.

Other than that, this is great! thanks for this :D

I will look into the graphic issue this weekend. Try the app in chrome as that is what i use and have had no issues as it may be browser related. Also try the original app with the star wars graphics to see if the math issue persists. I didnt change the original javascript, just the graphics.

There are those among us that can never have enough dice, because dice are cool.

I count myself as one of that number... However, its nice to have this app for quick sanity checks for some of my homebrew designs I'm working on. Its really helpful to have as many dice as I need. Plus, I find the Genesys symbols a lot more intuitive that SW dice.

I have corrected the despair graphics and all graphics appear to be working, at least in the windows versions of IE and Chrome. Where are you seeing the math error? Is it in the console or somewhere else? I will take a poke at trying to fix it but I am not terribly proficient in javascript.

The math error shows up rarely when there are a lot of successes and failures. I'd say it appears about 5% of the time. Its weird. It could just be a math error depending on what the type the variables are, (int, double, long, etc...)

I'm not proficient in JS either. I dont know how it handles those variable types, so I'm not gonna worry about it. I'll just pay a little more attention to the output.

Thanks again for the reskin!

Yep, that is why I have 8 sets of the Star Wars dice.

I also modified my SWRPG web roller for genesys dice

I have 10 sets of star wars dice, I use all 10 force dice but other than that 3 sets are set aside as gifts for when the the system is out of print (I will return the force die to each of them before I give them).

Well it cuts down on dice passing at the table. Everyone can roll initiative checks at the same time, and roll for the destiny pool at the same time. So far we can all roll our force power checks (read as have assembled the positive dice pool on another players turn and be ready to roll ad soon as the gm tells us the negative dice). I was GM until about 4 months ago when my son, Samuel L. Jackson Dalbey was born, now I'm a player in a former player's KotoR era game.
