World champ decks?

By TylerTT, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

I played a demo game yesterday and I have to say this is one very special game, it is a worthy way to spend one's life. but it is not the life for me.

I want world champ decks! like SUSD's review I want to pull this game out with about the same frequency as I play chess, once or twice a year when on holiday. and I want to do it with gorgeous full bleed cards and with decks me and my opponent know well.

so here is me just letting FFG know that I will pick up the world champ decks if they choose to make them.

I also think they make an interesting product that could jump start new player's collection. in that case the new player purchasing path would be core set +worlds deck of their faction, there is no stress on worlds decks to be "economically fair product" like there is on cycle packs so they can include whatever reprints they want in whatever quantities they need.

Is this actually a thing? No offense, but...that sounds incredibly boring to me.

None taken! It would be boring to play the same decks every week over and over. Thats why they make so many cards. I don't have room for that in my life though so I just want to get a few world champ decks if they ever make them eventually.

FFG released world champion decks for net runner. They were gorgeously reformatted so all the artwork was full bleed.

FFG has not announced any simular product for L5R yet so it's unknow if this game will follow suit but I hope so.

I've seen those packs for netrunner down my local but had no idea the cards in them were all alt art.

Im assuming that alternate art also precludes them from actually being tournament legal? Cause if they did something like that for L5R i would be all over it just for the artwork.

I remember when 'Old5R' released a world-champion deck with all foil cards, from the year that Ratling won. Shiny Nezumi everywhere!

They are not quite "alt art"

They are like the alt art cards in formatting but they use art on the original cards.

While not every card looked amazing in net runner. the standards for L5R is so high that they would look amazing!

in net runner these card decks were tournament legal. Given it does not destroy the LCG business model like it would for a TCG.

The Game of Thrones WC deck was very useful for picking up a few extra copies of useful cards for making additional decks without having to spring for multiple extra core sets.

The Thrones deck is 'extended art', or full bleed, if you prefer. It's absolutely gorgeous.

I definitely expect to see a similar product for L5R, but like Thrones and A:NR, it'll be a little further into the game's existence.

Team Covenant talked about this very idea on a recent podcast. These kinds of "World Championship" decks do help with one of the issues LCG's in general have, with giving new players a reasonable entry point down the line. I hadn't thought about it, but they'd be great for something like this, too. Its the reason I love the old MtG World Championship decks they used to do (from '97 to '04). They're basically the closest thing you can get to a "boardgame tcg" experience. L5R would be even better for this than most games, since they could do the highest placing deck for each Clan. That obviously has some potential logistical issues, but I definitely think it would be something worth exploring in the future.

Yeah, FFG has done this for Thrones and Netrunner. Have not done it for SWLCG. That said, I'd guess they'll do something similar for L5R.

My issue with it: If you only do the actual winning clan as a special deck, it funnels too many people into a single clan. Granted it's likely not feasible to make decks for all 'top of Clans'.

maybe do the top deck for each clan?

For year one I think it's a bit too soon. But year two the decks would have lots of other cycles and stuff mixed in.

I'd definitely say this World Champs is far too early to do a WC deck - we'd basically be looking at additional full bleed cards from the core set. I'm not even sure if 2018 would provide enough variance, assuming we're two cycles and a deluxe box into the game at that point.

2019 World Championships, on the other hand?

idk - the idea of a "world tournament deck" is great for a ccg because people may get play-sets of cards at a much cheaper rate to use for standard play. From my perspective, that is probably the main reason I would buy a world's deck, because if I had the cards I wouldn't buy it.

In an LCG you don't have the card rarity, you can easily buy whatever cards you want by buying the specific releases... Is this something that is actually important?

I would be in favor of continued promo full art cards. Those are awesome. I want the promo art of the most important cards like the clan champions, family daimyo, the Emperor if he gets a card in the LCG, ect. I don't think I'd care about a full card Orate Fan lol.

Full bleed decks of tournament champs would be awesome... I my clan wins!

I also don't understand the world champion decks, except for the full bleed artworks. It isn't really a good way of beginning with the game, because the deck will be obsolete within a very small time frame and then you probably need to buy the cycles anyways (because of the influence mechanic).

less obsolete than you may think. while the specific combo's may go bad or become illegal the LCG model favors a low power creep in the card pool. in a year or two they will function as a cheap source for the key cards that have been released up to that point. pretty much an automatic curation of the most important cards in the cardpool.
