Female Stormtroopers

By ThreeAM, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So I just watched Episode 7. At the 1h35min mark a female stormtrooper (who inst Phasma) tells klyo some info. It's one line so I never noticed it before, and I don't know if any of the other canon has examples, but I thought it's cool to know that Phasma isn't the only one.

Thought I'd share.

There are several female pilots. There's a First Order one in the Phasma comic. There's Ciena Ree from the book Lost Stars.

Here's a list of TIE Pilots.

Is the armor different?

I believe there are female troopers on Jakku too now that I think of it. The armor must be different for me to have that memory.

Can't tell. It's just the back of the head. You can only tell because of the voice.

Just rewound to watch both Jakku scenes and the Takodana battle (maz). In the first (night battle) 1 is a flame trooper and then 1-2 have like X straps across the back, they are the heavy weapons person. In the later jakku scene (Nima) has a trooper that just has what looks like extra ammo packs on their chest and a backpack. The Takodana scene just has more of those. No indication about sex.

Also; personally I'd be disappointed if women troopers had different armor, Faceless minions need to be indistinguishable!

According to canon information, yes there are female stormtroopers (both Imperial and First Order), and no, the armor is not changed.

I'd like to point out the Legends has an article on them on page 126 of the Essential Guide to Warfare.

Real world there is female body armor, but the difference is more about fit and weight dispersal than visual gender identification. So put a male and female soldier of the same rough height and weight next to each other and you won't see much difference unless you are really looking for it.

Suspect Stormtrooper armor is similar. The helmet and plates aren't hugely different, if at all. The difference is in the body glove , boots, undergarments, and field hygiene kit. In other words, the stuff you can't see unless you are another Stormtrooper..you know, like their ranks....

Armour for male/female is identical. I am basing this off the 501st Legion costume requirements. Which go to extreme lengths in maintaining screen accuracy and canon. As a member of the Legion I attended FanExpo Toronto this year. Out of 32 Original trilogy Stormtroopers present, 25% were women. In our group picture you cannot tell until the buckets come off.

Even the MarcyVerse doesn't do female stormtroopers. So no, they're not A Thing for us. This is one area I actually put my foot down despite the players whining. Even I have my limits! :)

We decided early on that the Empire doesn't do 'sexy'. They're on a WW2 footing for us, old-school-tie white guys with women only good for secretarial roles at best.

That's not to say there isn't a female clone prototype out there somewhere, but our stormtroopers are all physically identical biological males.

Must be a bit uncomfortable if they're 'gifted' in the chest department

Breasty armour is the most stupid thing ever, and only suitable for a male heterosexual fantasy. A woman in sensible armor will never have sexy breasts in it. Someone had to say it.

In my campaign, women are still incredibly rare in infantry roles; but they've been surging in numbers among officers, pilots, gunners, walker drivers, technicians, and so on. They all wear the same uniforms as the men, however; no cropped tops or miniskirts (not that I have anything against those things, mind you; but there's a time and a place, and active military service isn't one of them).

Yeah, for those who haven’t got close enough, know that women’s breasts are squishy.

Eh probably not. Between sports bras, physical training, and height/weight restrictions I suspect the number of busty troopers is pretty small.

And as I mentioned, making body armor that fit women doesn't look hugely different since it more about fit and weight than... Ahem...chest plates.

Male Soldier in body armor.

See, hers fits her smaller frame better, but otherwise not really different.

Stormtrooper armor isn't all that bulky by comparison, so again, unlikely the changes, if any, would be all that visible.

Generally speaking, true.

Though as the Legion team has discovered certain mediums, like miniatures, need exaggerated proportions or else it becomes difficult to tell the difference.

Of course technically the exaggerated proportions are needed for everything miniature wise if you want to keep the detail at a level that can be injection moulded.

I'm neither male nor heterosexual and I have plenty of fantasies :(

Not about stormtroopers, I'll grant you that though.

Or tiny :(

But in general the kind of super-fit, muscular women who actually wear body armour tend to have lean figures anyway.

A lot of female athletes have to actually put on weight when they want to have kids, for example.

The women I know who are "endowed" tend to avoid certain kinds of activities that would be common in the military, simply because it's painful, and no amount of support-bra or other equipment will help. So I expect in some sense this is self-regulating and the military (IRL or SW) wouldn't have to make exceptions.

Snipped a bit by me.

Does is bother anyone else that the bulletproof plates say 'Handle with Care'?

Those are ceramic class 4 plates and by 'care' in military jargon means 'don't throw the **** around and kick it dummass'.

Long before that stuff will bug a woman's breasts it will make her shoulders and back hurt like F, just like the men.

They are ceramic plates and designed to take an impact from a certain direction. Dropping them can damage or break them. In fact, breaking is part of how they absorb the impact from rounds.
