So is anyone really using this ability and if so what are you Taking? Kari let's you take an elf unit, Marro lets you take a unit from any faction. What's worth goin out of faction for?
Taking Units from other factions
I've used a 2x1 of Oathsworn Cavalry in my Waiqar army about three times. They were useful once, but mostly just fodder. I want to try the Spearmen + War Crier trick to send the blight to my opponents and see if that's any good.
Daqan almost always grab archers which is a solid move
I play Waiqar and I've never done it, but I would imagine, like Para said Oathsworn so you have Cavalry is good. I find this unlikely to be worthwhile for a long time once Death Knights come out in a couple weeks until some serious expansion happens and there is something with good synergy. I could see maybe adding Spined threshers being good to add some more panic tokens out there.
I plan on Flesh Rippers with Maro at some point.

I just picked up 4 trays of archers to use w/ Daqan. Haven't played them yet, but intend on trying the Kari+Hawthorne 4x1 archer setup.
Oh, I'm definitely going to recruit some Outland Scouts for to Waiqar's banner, and see what kind of trouble we can cause.
What is the fluff behind Forbidden Lore of the Shadow Council ? Are these supposed to be undead versions of the unit, enchanted perhaps. I'm thinking if a undead army owner would invest in a unit that he would paint accordingly.

Undead, mind controlled, or simply traitorous. Forbidden Lore of the Shadow Council is a title that leaves the actual methodology pretty broad, but one way or another, they wind up working for Waiqar.
Daqan do have some mentality shifts between archers and crossbowmen, theyre actually pretty different units overall.
In general crossbowmen are better for a daqan army strictly because of access to daqan specific stuff, while the archers are basically just ranged damage with an added bit of maneuver on top (and are a good dispatch runner candidate). I'm on the fence if i think archers are worth it over crossbowmen at all, but most of my issue there is the kari requirement (since i really dont care for her as a standalone hero)
Crossbowmen: Tougher (protected), add mortal strikes, Daqan upgrade access, can melee almost as good as Spearmen (Init4 melee with Hit mod and 1 blue is roughly on par with 1R1B at init3 w/ no mod)
Latari Archers: More nimble (dial and shift surge), double blues for better figure upgrade snipings, not limited to Range 1-3 to be truely effective, and while they dont have Daqan upgrades they still have some pretty valuable slots with decent universal upgrades (Dispatch Runner...)

I'm going with "resurrection/corruption" of fallen units.
My scions are going to kind of be broken things.

4x1 Deepwood archers with Kari and Hawthorne worked pretty well for me earlier this week. You put tempered steel on the archers and then inspiration stack them with hawthorne. It's fairly easy to roll 2 hits and then you add a 3rd with tempered steel and you can insta-kill most heroes. Use terrain and blockers wisely and you'll be able to fire off at least 2 or 3 of these volleys even if your opponent tries to avoid you.
