Place Forces & Place Obstacles Question

By Boom Owl, in X-Wing

Why are asteroids & debris put down before the ship placement step?

Edited by Boom Owl

Because it's thematic. The asteroids are already there, and the opposing forces have just approached each other.

Definitely. And to put it differently. . .

Because the player should be reactive the the board state, not the other way around.

That makes perfect sense. Was just thinking about how it would effect rock placement decisions made by the player. I dont think the order should change, but at a surface level it might make it feel like a more meaningful step to the average player who probably isnt thinking about rock placement at all in most of their games.

Basically, what would happen if there was an obstacle type you could place immediately after place forces besides mine field mapper.

I think it is some interesting and unexplored territory.

For example, what if there was some card/effect that let a player place (or not) an extra asteroid(s): 100/7, 100/5. . .100/12(!)

Here's something I've always found interesting. I feel like I've often read about placing obstacles on 'your' or 'your opponent's' side of the board, but:

Quote

After the sixth obstacle is placed, the player who does not have initiative chooses an edge of the play area to be his own; his opponent’s edge is the opposite side of the play area.

(Rules Reference 17)

I feel like no one plays this way, but it appears to be the written rule.

Thats because tournament rules overwrite that part, pretty sure.

Looks like you're correct. Neato. Thanks.
