Just been watching some Rogue One...

By Hrathen, in Star Wars: Armada

I love the battle of Scarif. Might be my favorite battle in all of Star Wars.

I was thinking what we could get from it for Armada. Obviously the U-Wing. I'm not sure what it should do. I

m not sure if it would be safe to give the rebels a relay 2 ship. Maybe some sort of effect it can do to ships other than just bomb them. It is a troop transport after all.

I was also thinking that we need General Hux. A fighter buffing Admiral for the rebels would be pretty cool. Just as I thought this I saw his X-wing get shot down. I I wondered if people would be willing to pay 30+ points for an Admiral that was also a unique squadron. It would mean that you don't have a flag ship, I don't know if that would be a problem. I think the biggest problem is that no one would ever take him into battle. Chasing Admirals in flotillas was bad enough, imagine trying to chase down an x-wing.

I kinda like that idea though. Would definitely add some crazy things.

I don't think we'll get General Hux until First Order ships start showing up in Armada (if they ever do).

I always considered Captain Sato the fighter-based Admiral for the Rebels. But another Admiral who's like a Sloan for the Rebels would be cool too. Don't think I would want them in a squadron though. Way too easy for them to be shot down, making them not worth the points.

Small note: Blue Leader at Scarif was Gen. Anton Merrick. Hux is the angry ginger leading the First Order. I don't expect to see a commander in a starfighter because that's a lot of rewritten rules, but new aces aimed at giving Rebels more AoE axes like Howl or Dengar might be interesting if it doesn't unbalance the universe.

Yeah. It would take a few rules additions to swing a commander in a squadron. Though as long as he/she didn’t count towards the squadron total and wasn’t an Escort, I’d be cool with the idea. It would be interesting to protect them while still getting mileage

What if the U-Wing had a boarding ability? Like a simliar effect as boarding troopers or something. Just throwing ideas out there to make it unique. I let you experts (no scarcasm) work out if it could be possible lol

I'd be fine with troop transports for both factions in some future campaign to be used in campaign-specific missions, sort of like Dropfleet Commander. Your goal is to get your transports to some position for a ground assault. You could use freighter miniatures for similar purposes in a "supply line attack" style scenario too.

Now that Armada already has boarding troopers, we don't really need squadrons that do that. But they can still be useful for other things.

I am an idiot. Not General Hux, General Merrik. Duh. But General Merrik and even if he wasn't in an X-wing I would love him as a admiral.

I think that's a super interesting-awesome idea, an admiral on a squadron. A real reason to take some Escort squadrons. They could make another version of Vader as an admiral too (getting rid of escort).

Also - seeing Father Marcus as an X-Wing ace coming to the rescue during the attack on Scarif was fantastic, huge huge huge fan of General Merrik.

Pretty sure we are getting one already.

If Merrik was just a ordinary unique X-wing sqd.

Which two keywords would he have and which unique special ability would he have?

I think that could work just fine, something like:

"When you activate within distance 1 of an enemy ship, you may spend one of that ship's defense tokens. If you do, you cannot move or shoot for this activation."

Other restrictions could apply, like only "Once this game", or "you cannot be engaged with a squadron without Heavy ".

He's a commander more than an ace, so he should have some sort of buff / force multiplier. He is also pretty ruthless are Rebel Commanders go so that could be a thing. Like any fighter within a given range can take 1 damage. Great for those red die bomber X-wings

Yessss, troop transport rules and units (even if just alternate cards for the right ships/flotillas/squadrons) would be a nice addition to a future campaign.

Strategic is conceivably related to moving people around (such as the VIP), but Relay doesn't really have a huge thematic link to shuttles or frieghters other than the vague notion of being a support ship.

But we don't see U-Wings doing anything particularly noteworthy in space, so it would be kinda weird if U-Wings had some crazy in-game ability to affect enemy ships. Remember that time in the movies, when a U-Wing... crippled the enemy ship's defenses?

We also mainly see it flying formation with X-Wings, so that's probably the role it'll get in the game - something that has you drop a stand or two into your Escort or dogfighter ball.

The real question is whether it would be modeled with wings forward or out. (Sadly, the answer is probably forward, rather than "FFG will release the first two-mold Armada squadron", but maybe I'll dig out the old hobby knife.)
