Attachment Ruling Needed

By RoninRains, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Page 3 of the rules reference states: An attachment a player controls remains under his or her control even if the card or game element to which it is attached is under an opponent's control.

It also states in a separate bullet: If a situation arises in which an attachment is not legally attached, discard the attachment.

My question is: If I take control of an opponent's character with an attachment, does it stay in play on his or her side until he regains control of the character? Does bullet 2 kick in, and discard the attachment from play? If for some reason it stays in play and the character it came from was in a battle, does that attachment still contribute force / abilities? I can't imagine that would be the case -- I feel like it would be discarded?

Thanks in advance!

The character and attachment are separate for "control" but the attachment is always attached to that character.

Attachment restrictions are constant - so if an attachment says "attach to a character you control" and then control of the character changes the attachment is then not legally attached, and is discarded.

Great question - I believe this will be a common one for people who are newer to FFG games.

If you take control of an opponent's character with an attachment, the attachment stays in play attached to that character, though remains under the control of the original owner. How you want to show that on the board is up to you, if you want to keep the attachments under the character and just 'remember' you have control over them, that's fine, or if you want to keep the attachments on your side, that's fine too. The attachments still contribute their skill attributes to that players, though the original owner can perform the actions on the attachments as they have control.

Note: There are some attachments that say "Attach to a character you control". These would be discarded when the character changes control as they are no longer legally attached.

Thanks guys! So to clarify -- Watch Commander says "Attach to a character you control." This is checked constantly, so when the character changes control temporarily to another player, Watch Commander must be discarded.

Fine Katana however, does not state "Attach to a character you control." When someone takes control of the character it's attached to, the character still gets the +2 military in battle, but if it had an ability on it, I would still be the one in control of activating it.

Do I have it right?

Except for the fact that Fine Katana has nothing to activate, yes.

Actually on the last point it depends on how the ability reads. If it is an ability on the attachment, like Daimyō's Favor, (https://fiveringsdb.com/card/daimyo-s-favor) then the player who controls the attachment can use it, though as pointed out before Daimyō's Favor would be discarded when it left your control seeing how it has the attachment restriction. On the other hand if the attachment grants an action to the character, like Duelist Training, (https://fiveringsdb.com/card/duelist-training) then the player controlling the character gets to use the action regardless of who controls the attachment.

I see, because the ability really isn't on the attachment at that point. The ability is granted to the attached character inherently, much like the bonus to military or political skill.
