How do the iconic locations from the films stack up?

By Mindless Philosopher, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hello, everyone!

I'm daydreaming when I should be working, and it occurred to me that I might want to ask my future GM to let us stop by at least one of the places from the movies, at least for a little bit. Have you guys ever spent any time anywhere from the movies? Are any settings especially fun or interesting?

I am thinking I'd love to stop by Mos Eisely or Cloud City. Love the seedy vibe of the former and the aesthetics of the latter.

I use them, but only once (maybe twice) per 13-session rotation. The sense of familiarity can help players get into it, but I worry about overdoing it.

So far my players have been to Tatooine (Mos Eisley, Bestine, Arnthout, and a number of wilderness locations), Bespin, Naboo, and Endor (or what's left of it, anyway). I'll add Sullust to the list too since it was mentioned by name even though it was never shown in any movie.

The only planet from the movies that I’ve sent my group to so far is Jedha. Shortly after they arrived, the Imperial forces there were instructed to pull out. As the players flew out, they saw a big metal sphere take position over the holy city....

Edit: I take that back. They’re based on Naboo, but so far, it’s really just a waypoint for them.

I recently had my players swing through Maz's castle on Takodana, but set between Ep IV-V. Being able to visualize it helped, and the reputation Han said it had in Force Awakens allowed them to get the sense of a dangerous spot without my having to amp it up.

That being said, if I'm using a location from the film, I try to, as much as possible, avoid using it how/during its use in the movies.

Coruscant and the whole level 1313 hive city cyberpunky thing is cool I think.

My players have yet to visit any of the places featured in the movies, though the other GM and I use a lot of locations from legends.

I do think the Ring of Kafrene would be a sweet location to use in an Edge or a certain kind of Age campaign.
