Is Armada a satisfying, re-playable board game as just the core set?
No, I think you'll find it lacking for many of the objectives and the board size. I would recommend at least a point cap of 300 with a 6x3 table.... which is enough for mediums to make Thier presence felt and vsds to not be so vulnerable.
I'd say you really want to play the full game of 400pts on 6*3. It doesn't take a ton to get to that point either. It's been mentioned and I'll second it: Armada is not really that expensive. The core set is expensive granted, but the expansions aren't really. Especially considering most ships you might only own one of at a $30 price tag and in X-wing it's not uncommon to see folks pick up two of a new ship at $15 a pop. I keep a fairly moderate collection of both games and I end up spending less on a wave of Armada, for both factions, than I did on almost every wave of X-wing. Even having easily stopped buying X-wing at wave 9 or so for my part I've probably spent only 75% as much on Armada and I consider myself to have 'more' to play with for it. For instance were about to receive a fairly sizable "two large ship" wave in Armada, and it will cost me like $80-100. To but what I would have called a set of X-wing wave 12 would have been $85-115 or more depending on what's all in it. Without that more full game I don't know if it's still that great, it got really wonky for us. Just remember, proxies are your friends!
