L5R Designer leaves game

By DarkBlack, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Well obviously that just means that he lost his duel, so he's been sent home. He can always attack another province later.

Well, he's leaving the lead designer spot on Starwars, it doesn't mean he's leaving FFG or anything related to L5R for the time being.

It's actually a sign that the Star Wars LCG has reached an impasse where a lead designers is no longer needed, which is not surprising, the Star Wars LCG is one of FFG's older LCG's, in many ways it's starting to show its age as a design in comparison to the many modern concepts introduced in newer games and its even more likely that we will at some point in the near future learn that the game is going EOL or that its going to be revised into a new edition.

Besides I think it's worth pointing out that I don't think Erik Dahlman is a "lead" designer as far as L5R is concerned, he is the rookie of the group surrounded by seasoned pros like Nate French & Brad Andres who's design style is all over this game. It's clear from the design of Legend of the Five Rings that they did all the heavy lifting.

If he leaves star war to focus on l5r, I would say good?

Yeah, I'd say it's the 2nd or 3rd oldest still running, after Netrunner and probably LotR.

One think to note specifically about the Star Wars LCG is that unlike other games like Netrunner and Lord of the Rings, they don't have any competing games from the same franchise. With Star Wars there is Star Wars Destiny and I think a lot of Star Wars fans are probably split between these two games and any Star Wars fans coming into the fold now are probobly at a decision point... do you go Destiny or the LCG? If you go into the forums and do some research its likely you will feel the push towards destiny more as the LCG has a veteran community that is already suffering from veterans fatigue so there is quite a bit of ******* about the game.

In either case though I don't think the LCG will go out of print any time soon, it still has a strong following but I think most people just like in Lord of the Rings are playing catch up. The release schedule is just too intense, I doubt there are particularly many people who have complete collections and are actively maintaining them. I think most players fall into a more relaxed play/collection style where you pick stuff up whenever it grabs your fancy, that seems to be the case with most games which is also why I think they are doing revisions for games like Netrunner. At some point you realize that new people aren't going to walk into a game system with 100 expansions and be like... "ok lets start at the begining" and try to catch up. Revised edition basically say "hey, here is a new starting point". I think we can expect that to happen with the Star Wars LCG at some point.

FFG did just lose Lukas who made Destiny. so it makes sense they would shift things around a bit.

Yeah, this is the only factual information so far. The rest of the stuff about him being fired and conflict between the 3 designers is just rumours.

*Reads title*

"Oh no! A designer left the L5R proj-"

*See he left Star Wars*

"...well that's a clickbait title"

He could have left for a bunch of reasons, mainly because Destiny is actually going somewhere and the new Star Wars Miniature game is coming out. This is drama without reason.

Lukas is gone? When did this happen?

Im not super sure when it happens maybe a month ago. He got a job at wizards in what I must assume to be a better paying position.

He obviously left because they are releasing 6 sets in 6 weeks. He senses the impending doom heralded in this thread:

Does he still have any Fate on him? If so, he'll just attack again next turn!

Clickbait.

I am both unfamiliar with the concept of sarcasm and would like some cores for 5 bucks so I'll take it!

Just an update, in case people haven't heard:

Eric Dahlman is no longer with FFG, according to source within FFG.

That's a bummer. He was the only one of the three designers with real experience in the old game.

So he was the one who ran it into the ground... j/k

Im very sorry that he left FFG. After reaading glassdoor (with a bag of salt) and looking how FFG functions on the production and marketing side of things, which is really lackluster, especially compared to asmodee in europe (italian branch being a good example), im happy that these talented designers like eric and lukas are leaving. I Wish you guys to keep making games and make loads of money.

They have such strong IP, such AWESOME GAMES, but they cant put together an announcement for l5r board game (i've forgotten about it after it leaked), the distribution of destiny which almost failed. They have made little progress with l5r launch for gencon, but FFG is really really bad on every business side except game design.

I hope this means the management shakes up, they triple the salary to brad and nate and get their stuff together because they cant grow with this quick moneygrab model they are using. You wont make money FFG if you keep up like this!< Time to join the big boys!

What is this "moneygrab model" you're talking about?

Where did you read this? Can't find any site confirming this.

It was right after the launch of EAW, so like a month. Lucas is now at WoTC in the R&D department.
