Hilt-masking kit ideas

By Seguleh, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Hi, I would like to use this modification on my lightsaber but i still dont have an idea as what i should disguise it. My character is a female Twi'lek Politico`. The first idea was some kind of Jewlery, like a necklace, or around the arm or hipp (it will be a curved hilt). But what jewlery would fit to all dresses... ok with "normal" clothing you could simply put it under it... or some kind of leku jewlery, or some cultural item with special meaning to the people, a mini-urn with a little bit of ashes of all my ancisters..... hmmm. The other idea would be to make it into an everyday object, almost everything where a hilt or similar is used... binoculars, an umbrella... a boots knife/dirk.

Do you guys have ideas or examples what ur players use as masking item?

If you split it into multiple parts, not just two, the PC could put it pretty much anywhere. They could have the crystal as jewelry as you said, the focusing lens (I'm just giving random names to bits, none of these are hard and concrete you understand) as a form of monocle, or perhaps part of some viewing device they wear. The shaft of the hilt could be bracelets perhaps, or part of a necklace. If they are frequently carrying scientific equipment, they could have bits masked as other devices. Or perhaps as part of a belt, worked into the loops or something.

If you insist on keeping the hilt intact, I'd go with the stuff you mentioned. Though I'm pretty sure one of the more recent published books has the "saber cane' option for your PC's. Other ideas though, could be a flashlight, and you just switch out some bits to make it into the actual saber. A cane, an umbrella.

Torchlight is a natural. Some other form of tool... a vibro knife or dagger would be great as far as that goes... 2 weapons in 1... I'd say those are more for non curved hilts but hey.

As for a curved hilt how about a hair/ headpiece almost like a crown or an ornate hairclip? Or maybe a waist piece? Kinda like an ornate belt buckle? I'm thinking of something like wonder woman's belt only a single curved v where you could actually have 2 hilts hidden in plain sight and very easy to access. Course rather than 2 in the front you could do at the sides going around the waist.

Obviously I'm one for either dual wielding or having a spare just in case.

I guess it depends on just how curvy the hilts will be. The angle of the curve always seemed to be fairly shallow to me, which might limit what you could disguise it as. I personally wouldn't put too much time into it, the system has a very simple way to conceal it. You roll skullduggery. :P I'd perhaps give them some boost die, or an upgrade on the skullduggery roll to successfully conceal the items, and then just let the player describe it however they want. It's really no different than a disguise, which is a contested roll if someone is trying to find the stuff. The better the roll, the harder the contested roll would be.

If I were the GM, I'd just have them roll it, give them a few boost if they were really making an effort to hide it, and then if they succeed, give them a thumbs up and say "ok, so you hide it on your person, do that however you want, and describe it if you wish." Most people probably aren't going to even assume they have a saber, or what one even is, so in most scenarios, it wouldn't even be an issue. However if they were around an Inquisitor, or some other Force related person, who might notice the tell-tale signs, then I'd do the contested roll. Otherwise, I'd just let it go by as descriptive.

great ideas guys, thx a lot! I maybe go with the crown/lekku circlet.

Btw, when we are talking about disguise already, i also thought to camoflage my twi'lek as a togruta now and then, the skin color fits, i just need some makeup and a "helmet". Would you just buy it or build it or is there a proper masquerade-talent?

Well, there is an item that's just called "Disguise Kit" that's in the basic equipment section. I've always ruled it's a basic, all-purpose kit to let a PC try and conceal who they are. What's in it, given we're not just talking about humans like IRL, would be very up to the table. I've always assumed it's got enough stuff that pretty much anyone can try and conceal themselves to some degree. Obviously a Rhodian trying to be a Human would be beyond a basic kit, but a Twi'lek pretending to be a Togruta. Or a human pretending to be a Zabrak for example, that's reasonable to me.

For the impossible disguises "Ithorian trying to look like a Hutt" for example, I'd at least let the alien change their distinguishing markings. So while they will always look like an Ithorian, they won't look like THEM. Now, if you are talking about really expensive stuff, like a holo-suit, or something really high tech, then I'd allow at least a superficial change. Hiding inside a hologram would be fine, but of course it might not hold up to scrutiny if someone touches them or whatever.

If a PC at the table is a tech genius, and has the talents to let them whip up crazy MacGyver-esque things, then sure, if they make the difficulty of the roll, then they make it. But the basic stuff would be like makeup, fake hair fibers(or equivalent), false teeth, optical lenses to mask your species. All that stuff, I would say is easily in a "disguise kit"

Long ago I had a Jed-in-hiding hide her lightsaber as part of a hilt for an actual sword. The hilt broke apart and allowed her to use it as a lightsaber.

Prosthetic lekku. Always with you, always accessible.

My lightsabers are disguised as two vibroknives. I built them from scratch that way using the crafting rules. There are two different ways of disguising them and thats either through crafting think its called inbuilt which is the best way or using the mod. If you use inbuilt from crafting then I dont think there is a roll to see if someone can tell unlike the mod. The mod is different cause it will add 2 difficulty to the persons preception check and you can mod that further for it to add 4 difficulty total.

I'm a little ashamed that my mind first went to a vibrating sex toy, actually that was the second stop, first stop was glow rod. In my defense years ago on the threat detected live play podcast one of the pcs was looking to pick up a lightsaber from a twilek escort and got a vibrating sex toy instead.

I confess this is where my mind went:

"Oh, that.. (looks down, whispers demurely) is just my personal massage unit.."

As an added bonus, it would probably make most garden variety customs officials or security personnel too uncomfortable to investigate further.

To be fair, it's probably one of the better disguises, especially for someone who isn't a skilled liar. If an Imperial officer pulls out a weird piece of metal, you're gonna look mighty suspicious when your face turns red and you start sweating and stammering, "Uh, it's, uh, just a torch, officer!"

However, when he pulls out a strange purple cylinder with the little bunny ears and a slight curve toward the tip (dueling hilt, anyone?), suddenly your discomfort has a perfectly reasonable explanation. Especially if your friends giggle a little.

If you had the curved hilt mod for your lightsaber, I might go with a thick golden torc to wear about the neck. One where the skin side is flat enough for one to snap the both sides together to form the whole of the lightsaber curved hilt. Since the power supply would be what would show-up on most scanners, I would put it in either another piece of jewelry (like a communication ring) or a data pad.

How about a remote control for your starship's entertainment center. Or a droid-caller. Or a dispenser for hand sanitizer.

One of the players in my group disguised their lightsaber as a blaster, which also worked as a blaster. It had the unfortunate drawback of looking like a lethal weapon, so a lot of bouncers wanted the character to leave ut at the door. The lighsaber is now back to looking like a hydrospanner.

....oh that could end badly....

Current character has the same thing with a vibro sword, that way the energy cell won't appear out of place. Also has the Gene lock attachment to make sure no one else can pull the saber off.

Since he has the broad saber, might see about custom making an attachment that runs a neon like glow along the vibro blade. That way when asked about the rumors of a lightsaber he can just let them see his "vibro sword". Lol
