70 Point Squads

By j_man_04, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I've been introducing a coworker to the wonderful game of X-Wings. Since we've been playing on our lunch breaks, a full 100 point list takes a little too much time, especially since he's still getting familiar with the game.

So, we've been doing 70 point games until he gets a feel for the rules and list building.

I think the point limitation has refreshed the game for me a bit. I'm finding certain ships and combos more playable with this point limit.

Here's one I'm working with now:

(69 Points)

Wedge (37)

  • Expertise
  • R2-D2
  • Integrated Astromech

Lowhhrick (32)

  • Selflessness
  • Breach Specialist
  • Jan Ors

I presume the strategy is to Jan-Evade on Wedge, and Reinforce on Lowhhrick? I guess that works, and this is an "introduce a coworker" thing, so going full optimization isn't necessarily the best idea. However, I still think there's probably ways to leverage both ships abilities a bit more. To me, that starts with Jan. Wedge really loves double-mods on attack, since the reduced defender agility makes the most of it, which he can't get if he's Jan-Evading. Meanwhile, if Wedge dies, Jan's nearly useless because Lowhhrick can Reinforce. Additionally, Lowhhrick has pretty much no offensive power, due to Reinforcing all the time. Something like Rey crew would help Lowhh's offense, and Wedge would be more naturally inclined to want to Target Lock then. That'd be a considerable amount more offense, while still being pretty defensive.

I'd also consider swapping Expertise for Predator. It'll work if Wedge K-Turns, but the bigger thing it does is allow Wedge to focus instead of TL. You'll have a token for full offense when your rolls turn out that way, or you'll be able to save it for defense. A focus on 2 greens is pretty reasonable, although not as good as a Jan-Evade, but it's just more flexible. Expertise, for all it's power, kind of takes away options. You'll either have to commit to an all-in offense with TL, or take a focus which will only be good on Defense. Predator + Focus leaves options open, even if it's less powerful for full offense.

Going Predator would also open up a 2nd point, which could be Vectored Thrusters on either ship. It'd cost Wedge an HP, but he'd be able to leverage it best at PS9. On Lowhhrick, having access to barrel rolls really starts to make up for being unable to K-Turn.

Here's my 70 point Squadron:

Zeb shuttle (Phantom title) (18)

Lothal Rebel (Ghost title, Accuracy Corrector, TLT, C-3PO, Intelligence Agent, Engine Upgrade) (52).

Oh, how I love it. Oh, how little fun it would be to play against.

All good insights, for sure. Predator in place of Expertise is great. It'll be essential for new players to be able to perform red maneuvers and Predator keeps him on the offensive.
