Not quite OT tournament

By Estarriol, in X-Wing Squad Lists

My club is holding a tournament in the new year for waves 1-3 ships and pilots only, but with all of the upgrades that are available now, plus the option to take z-95 and punisher. Aces packs from the correct era are fine, so Jake and Carnor are legal, but Rey is not. Wave 3 was when I started playing so I’m quite excited about going home, as it were.

Im looking for ideas, a lot of my favourite squads have roots in these ships -

  • Triple T-65
  • Jan/Jake/Tycho
  • TIE Swarm
  • Doomshuttle plus aces
  • Triple Interceptors
  • 5 A-wings

To this I can add a squad I’m building at the moment for other schemes

  • Han/Luke

My question is this, It’s a casual tournament and I’m not aiming to win, so what did you have the most fun playing AGAINST back in the day. I’m not talking about someone setting up a crap squad, but one that is not a NPE.

I miss flying all the above, and they all look cool on the table, so if you guys can help me narrow down the list from another perspective or come up with something even cooler it’d be great :)

Han/Luke is always a classic. I played against that list in my first game.

Other than that, Draw Their Fire/R2-D2 Luke is pretty great. I flew that at an OT Tournament with 2x BSP B-Wings, and a Rookie Pilot with R3-A2 and IA. A little stress control (but not Panic Attack levels), a little damage-shifting (but not FSR levels), and 12 red dice. I'd highly recommend getting a 4-ship list over a 3-ship list for X-Wings. Just feels like a really clean list to fly.

For Interceptors, you could even go four. Soontir with PTL/Targeting Computer/Autothrusters, Saber with PTL/AT, 2x Alpha with AT.

If you're looking to avoid NPE for opponents, I'd probably avoid missiles and torpedoes. High-PS alpha strikes, like VI/Cruise Missile on Vader or Juno Eclipse, or torpedo-powered B-Wings escorted by Biggs. I think what folks want to avoid most in an OT-style tournament is the "nuked off the table" thing. Bombs are already mostly off the table (although Deathrain with Bomblets, Advanced Sensors, LWF, and Unguided Rockets is a heck of a lot of fun at 36 points... at PS 6 and without Sabine/Cad Bane, it never feels too oppressive, either).
