Reinforced Deflectors

By Schu81, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello everyone!

I am confused by the wording of this card & the FAQ text. Please help :)

Now there is the FAQ, which says that the wording should be:

“After defending, if you suffered a combination of 3 or
more damage and critical damage during the attack,
recover 1 shield (up to your shield value).”

So, let's say I have got a Hera in the Ghost.

Scenario A

The Ghost gets hit by 3 critical damage, no "normal" damage. Just crits.

Can the Ghost recover 1 shield after suffering the damage?

Scenario B

The Ghost gets hit by 2 damage and 1 critical damage.

Can the Ghost recover 1 shield?

Scenario C

The Ghost gets hit by 4 damage (no crits!)

Can the Ghost recover 1 shield?

Thanks for your help :)

Yes to all.

Yep the "When defending" basically keeps you from using the ship as a minesweeper 8).

Sorry for the thread necro, but the key word in the text is AND! Normal damage AND critical damage. Not OR. I'd like to see where FFG has said yes to all the OP's scenarios. The way it is written you need both normal and critical damage in whatever combination to regen a shield. If it's yes to all scenarios listed, then why did they bother with an FAQ update?

3 critical damage + 0 regular damage = 3 combined critical and regular damage, which absolutely triggers the effect of the card.

If you replaced the AND with an OR - "3 damage OR 3 critical damage" - then mixed damage wouldn't work, and you'd need at least three of one type to trigger the shield regen. As it is, the update is meant to clarify that critical damage can be used to satisfy the 3 damage requirement to trigger the effect.

I find that interpretation to be counter to the way it is written. 0 regular damage does not meet the requirement for regular damage and critical damage. The statement implies at least 1 of either damage.

JFC. If you took 3, regen a shield. It’s not keyed to whether it’s hits or crits. Stop trying to overthink every little thing.

Originally critical damage was omitted on the card text and at that time if you took two hits and a crit then people would argue no shield for you. This should have been a "just cuz" clarification ruling based on FFG's use of words-within-terms since they used the word 'damage' instead of the symbol and the word 'damage' is contained within the term 'critical damage'. For example: TIE fighter, TIE/fo fighter, and TIE/SF fighter all count as 'TIE fighter' for purposes of cards and rules. Anther being: everything with 'TIE' in the name can equip Twin Ion Engine mkII which is restricted to TIE only.

But they did errata it because people are stubborn and their rules are often counterintuitive. Now we have to refer to another counterintuitive concept to satisfy the reasoning being put forward by @Woobyluv . Zero is a valid number in X-wing unless stated otherwise by a specific card. This concept has been recently reinforced by the Torani Kulda clarification in the most recent FAQ (4.4.1 on p.14 )

Therefore: 4 'damage' and 0 'critical damage' = '3 or more damage and critical damage'
