Six Packs In Six Weeks

By Kakita Shiro, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

I'm assuming that most of the people complaining about spending 15$ a week on a card game for six weeks- already have a job.

If you don't have a job and are relying on your parents or someone else to buy you the cards- then you'll probably have to beg.

But lets assume you have a job and really need to buy these cards.

Try to look at some ways to save some money each week-

What else do you spend your surplus income on? Maybe cutting back on some other entertainment will help you purchase the cards you want.

And... if you're living check to check- maybe investing in a card game isn't the best financial decision.

:D

What I'm wondering is what happens after those six weeks. How long do we have to wait for the release of the next cycle? Will it be six weeks frenzy, long months of wait followed by another six weeks of frenzy? Or will they go back to teh standard (continuous) monthly LCG releases?

Ah the Keepers of others money have also arrived.

Soon the whole set will be here.

What I'm pissed about is that whole keeper seeker stuff. yes I know one of the core elements is that pro players could influence the story. First off: story is fine. Second: they get to have a say on wich cards get released, Ok I'm fine with that, as long as I don't know what we would have gotten instead wich leads me to last point: I don't like some joe shmoe in 'merica telling me what cards I can and can't play in my decks. I paid for those cards and I'm gonna use them. If I can't use them (all the time) then those cards shouldn't be in there. *

* Yes I know you can just play casual but still. And yes I have enough problems with set rotation and ban lists as it is.

It's entirely possible the people picking the keeper/seeker roles are from another country.

Blame Canada! :P

Yeah didn't wanna target a single country, but just the idea some one(s) get to pick wich cards I can use and screw over my entire meta...gaaaah!

FFG should have done what they did with the Arkham Horror LCG: bring out the core and then follow up with a big expansion to get the meta going, and then a normal cycle.

You know what this is? Day 1 DLC, why weren't these cards included in the core if they were going to be released so soon?

DOC. DLC. Same thing right?

I get that. There was a big old argument about that when we first found out. I'm ok with it, but, it's not for everyone. I like it because even though it's a small change it can get people out of their comfort zone to try something new. It's always nice to look at a game a different way. I don't like getting stuck in a rut by seeing the same things over and over. It's also why I like this accelerated release of the first dynasty cycle.

Wich is why I play Magic, casually with friends rather than fryday night magic at the LGS (also I work permanent late shift so I can't make FNM anyway, but that's not the point.)

Luckily there are lots of clans to play with so I was thinking about players trying different clans, but I get the feeling most L5R players have one fave clan and they stick with it. Is that correct?

I hear that. I play MTG casually with friends and then on Mondays the local store does a free to play standard tourney, where I always show up with a standard pauper deck. It's free so I'm going to have some fun, generally getting crushed, but, at least it's something different. I think now what I will do is just bring an illegal deck, concede and ask them if they want to play L5R instead. :)

For bonus points, bring a deck made of cards only from Champions of Kamigawa. :D

Many players are loyalists to their Clans, but then there are also those who player whatever has the strongest deck or are "mercenaries" so to speak in that they've played the clan with the most interesting story option for a tournament win. In Old5R, that is. At least based on tournament numbers, I'd like to say that Europe tends to be very consistent on its clan loyalty. I remember plenty of tournaments where posters on the AEG forums would be surprised to see a large representation of a "weak clan", and it could easily be explained with the fact that people liked being loyal to their faction. :)

Casually, I would dare say that most players do play different clans. With the Keeper/Seeker mechanic, I think we might see some more changeup, but not that much, to be honest. And I've seen that already on the Dragon Clan forum, people have started to have a conversation on what would be the best pick for the Dragon. I wouldn't be surprised if similar discussions are happening on other clan forums.

Yes. In the old game players were extremely loyal to one clan. However this was also a way for players to participate as cheaply as possible because they could trade away the rest of their stuff for just the one clan, and not just because of clan loyalty.

Having all the cards should allow players to really hone in on what clan they like, while allowing them access to the others so the game should be much more competitive under the lcg model......even if everyone is not playing competitively. I think the level of play and the design around players decisions being more important than deck building and meta gaming should lead to a more enjoyable experience for all.

Thanks for clearing that up. One of the staff at my LGS is Lion to the core. I guess I would have been a clan loyalist to if they hadden't taken away my Spider. Ah well, that was bound to happen, gonna play Mant- Oh. So now I'm wondering about Dragon and Unicorn.

Get out of my head! lol

MTG player - "You can't play that in standard"

Me - "But, I really want to play something with Samurai..............hey you want to see some real Samurai?"

Put like that, the 6 packs in six weeks isn't so bad: If you play Dragon, Phoenix, Crane, and your buddy likes Lion, Crab, Unicorn you can pool your cash and get the cards you want cheaply. I guess I'll be buying all the packs tough. Untill they bring back teh Spider clan. Then I go hard spider.

Exactly! :)

I plan to buy the packs that will be good for Dragon, and then buy the other packs later if I want them for collection-purposes. Honestly, why I can splurge that kind of money on it, our apartement is also running out of space (so many books, RPGs, movies, and my enormous L5R CCG collection), so I don't know if hubby would approve. And with a new group popping up at our gaming store, I might see about pooling resources there for packs, incase there are any players there with less disposable income.

Me: You should try L5R: You have two decks at the same time!

MTG player: Whoa!

Old jaded Vampire the eternal struggle player: Pfff we had that before it was cool.

For the Spider there is no other way!

I'm all about the Shadowlands. Literally every deck I played in the old game was corrupted with Shadowlands cards. From my first deck to my last. I plan on running whatever clan will allow me to absorb the honor loss that is bound to be caused by playing Shadowlands cards. I already have my decklists for every clan with 3x Goblin Sneak for each. I'm hopeful that the other dynasty packs will have more goodies (I guess technically they are the baddies) for me.

Yet anther possible reason for me to want those expansions early

*edit*

There was one tournament were I played a no-personality deck.......so it technically wasn't non-Shadowlands

Didn't the bad guys almost win, back in the 90's? If memory serves me well it was some Lion dude against a shadowlands player and he just managed a win. Otherwise they would have made years of darkness set with fallen clans and everything.

See this is why I don't like the Lion, they blow my buzz. :D

That's how they roll. How about teh fact that you can have 3 copies of the same card, but there's only one in a core set?
