Six Packs In Six Weeks

So you want them to add six expansions worth of cards to the core, and still expect them to sell for the same price?

(Also, out of curiosity, what did you mean by "DOC"?)

Yes.

(A typo I missed for DLC)

Should also be pointed out that these posts are made in jest and meant as tongue in cheek "complaints"

Store owners and community leaders that pushed this game and got people to buy cores on the LCG selling point of "2-3 cores + one pack a month, easy on the wallet and easy on the meta" have now been made to look pretty foolish and unreliable. Not a good look. Should potential new players trust the LCG model anymore?

You mean, should players trust that an unusual occurrence taking place immediately after launch and with no indication that it will continue is, in fact, a one-time event and that things will return to normal after this event?

Sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Well, then it's the job to explain that the reason for this is because it's attempting to fix a known problem with LCGs that the meta gets stale quickly, and that you don't HAVE to buy these expansions right as they're released.

My bad. I should have looked at who was "complaining" before responding. I've just seen so many complaints about this that your post actually didn't seem too over-the-top in comparison.

I mean, there are people with valid budget concerns, but there are also people who are declaring that the game, FFG, and brick-and-mortar game stores are all already dead and buried as a result of this specific decision.

What I'm wondering is what happens after those six weeks. How long do we have to wait for the release of the next cycle? Will it be six weeks frenzy, long months of wait followed by another six weeks of frenzy? Or will they go back to teh standard (continuous) monthly LCG releases?

My guess is that there will be a one month break in January and then they'll start the second cycle in February with a dynasty pack and go one a month until July, so that there will be about a month between the last packs release and the Grand Kotei at GenCon 2018. They may do a deluxe set either before or after the dynasty cycle, but regardless, I don't expect they will start the third cycle until after World's next November.

Oh, It's okay. :D

I'm someone who is in that wonderful place between casual and competitive, so I do have financial concerns, but I also know I don't have to buy everything right away. I can live with waiting, not like they're taking my money from me when these are released, and I'm forced to buy them.

and both of those groups could have been a part of a store's growing community...now they won't.
That alone makes this a bad, poorly marketed, decision.
the FIRST expansion to a game should NOT have people quitting.

And how many people would have passed or waited on the game, but will now buy it because there's a larger card pool, and they may even be able to get into it with one core and six packs? You're focusing exclusively on the negatives without even considering the positives.

We already knew from how big the hype was at GenCon that there would be some attrition and people dropping out before the community stabilized. How many of these people quitting are doing so solely because of this decision, and how many were just looking for an excuse to quit?

I'm just saying, for every complaint I see about this decision, I also see at least one cheer. How about waiting to see the effects next year before we judge how good/bad this decision is?

EDIT: Also, it is helpful if you actually use the "Quote" feature on the board. That way the people you're responding to will get a notice that you've answered.

I'm just surprised how many folks have apparently done exhaustive surveys of the player base of their stores, especially the posts yesterday immediately after the announcement. Tonight will be my first chance to even talk to another local L5R player about it and I doubt there will be a uniform opinion about it among my FLGS's customers.

I was just in my local game shop to preorder all 6 of the expansions and they are very happy about the one time change to the release format.

I realise it just one store but they had all 40 of the initial order of the the core set pre sold before release and I was the 3rd person since the announcement to preorder all the expansions.

With any luck, they'll hold off on more cards until March/April (tax return season) and lead off with a deluxe box, followed by the new cycle of dynasty packs.

ADD: For the sake of changing release cycles, that would give the opportunity of this cycle:

March: Deluxe box

April: 2 Dynasty packs

May: 2 Dynasty packs

June: 2 Dynasty packs

July: Deluxe box

August: 2 Dynasty packs

September: 2 Dynasty packs

October: 2 Dynasty packs

November: Worlds with a Deluxe box

What are you concerned about? Being at a disadvantage at a local tourney because you can't afford to buy these packs immediately?

You'd have 3 cores and 2 packs by the time a "competitive" player would have 3 cores and 6 packs. If you're both Crab, you'd be down 6 cards and some neutrals. You couldn't have fun and make a competitive deck with 3 cores and 2 packs? during the 4 months you're playing catch-up? Sorry, bro.

As a store owner, we have not been made to look foolish. FFG was quite clear that this release was a special case. Not only that, but every single player that purchased the game from us is overwhelmingly excited about this.

While I agree with the first sentence...

Two packs each month is a good way to make me leave this game. I'm not surrendering Arkham Horror LCG or my economic wiggle room for this, as much as I love it. Two packs for two LCGs is one thing, bleeding money to please competitive players? Noooope. Enjoy the game, have fun, and make this game thrive for many decades. :) But I'll be out because I'm not (or will ever be) rich and would love to sometimes have some spare money to buy stuff like PoDs, an RPG book, videogames (Phoenix Point, eventual XCOM 3,...) or just be able to buy presents for friends and family. ^_^

That said, I'd keep an eye on packs that include Battle Maidens. Just saying.

None of the other LCG's have attempted to maintain a two expansion pack/month release schedules (and even when it happened, it was more due to vagaries of shipping than intentionally scheduled releases) and I doubt that they will attempt to maintain that rapid a release schedule. I think we are likely to see a similar schedule to the other games (1 deluxe/year, 2 cycles/year), although that will likely mean that it will be a minimum of six months between tournaments and seeing the results of story choices showing up in the cards.

Amen brotha. Such a sweet spot we're in!

Another reason to be excited for 6 packs in 6 weeks? I'm closer to having 7 full, decent, clan decks in a shorter amount of time without having to switch up cards.

Comparing extra physical products to DLC is hilarious. every card they include increases the price to manufacture, ship, and pack .

Thinking that DLC is crooked to begin with is wrongheaded.

Everything that a game includes or sells to you separately all costs money to produce, even digital content costs money to develop and bandwidth to deliver. If you think bandwidth is free or negligible cost understand that amazon.com makes it's profit from it's web services business. almost everything else they do looses money.

Come up with a better argument.

My bet is that FFG wants to retain the competitive players (most of them coming from O5R who already invested in the game and will buy all packs) by bringing a quick varied enviroment, than trying to appeal to those unwilling to even buy one core set.

That's what I think, not like a know anything or something.

This is one of the best things they could have done for the launch of this game. I'm very happy to see this.

To begin with, I actually like the idea of releasing all 6 packs at once. While I agree with you that comparing physical products to DLC, I think that a lot of DLC is crooked. There are simply too many overpriced DLCs and shady practices (DLC on disc) to not get that idea.

This is way too much money spent in too little time.

If you don't like it, then you don't buy it! And If enough of you don't buy it then the price will go down!

Get over your fomo and you will save mo'dough!

If your dumb enough to buy a season pass ahead of it's release or announced content then that's on you!

If they lie then you have a ligitimate complaint!
